Blended Hybrid (M8) vs. Regular Hybrid (plus bonus content)

There has been a long standing question about utilizing the blended hybrid operation (AKA M8) and if it is actually more efficient than just leaving the 4XE in Hybrid mode and allowing the vehicle to make the decisions. Which method is more/less efficient? In this test, we find out. I did two back to back tests, one using the blended mode and one just allowing the vehicle to make it's decisions. In both tests, I drove at the same speed and the same distances and controlled as many variables as possible. I have to say, the results surprised me.

$77.92 / 336 miles = $0.23 per mile. I think my Electric Mode driving averages around $0.02 per mile, given about half of my charging at home where I pay $0.10 per kWh to Rocky Mountain Power. Love this difference of 11x and happy to see this factor increase even more over time and with possibilities of solar power generation and such.

I just took delivery of a '23 Rubi with KO2's, steel bumpers, hard top and tow package. The Rubi gets around 1-2 mpg worse than a Sahara just based on the tires and lift. The high line fenders allow more drag in the wheel wells, but let's face it, the Wrangler isn't aerodynamic... I believe the power meter is not an indicator of state of charge or re-gen, but how much power the Jeep needs at a given point. Try accelerating and you will see the needle move towards 100%. I drive mostly electric to work since I only have a 12 mile drive each way and I charge at work as well. So this video was informative for when I go to the river or Vegas. As always, another great video! I'm amazed at how you manage to make me learn a little more each time. Thank you so much. I bought a Rubicon 4xe a few months ago and I always grin when I pass by a gas station at 2.21$ CAD a liter (about 6$ a galon roughly). I run 37 km to work, by then, my battery is near 0% but still manage to do the whole trip on electricity. We have level 2 chargers at work which cost about 1$ an hour so it cost me about 2.80$ to charge. I get then to back home sometimes with the sky one touch (less aerodynamic?) open and return with 4 or 5% left. Maybe because it gets hotter later in the day, who knows. Anyway, love this vehicule and keep up with the good work! A real reference for me!

I have a Rubi 4xe bought new. Don't drive much, and when I do it's usually within 25 miles. Have had it since Oct 2021, and it's just rolled over 3200 miles. Tank of gas which I refill on the half using 91 octane runs me about 6 weeks. Rubi says I'm getting between 47-51 mpg. I have a level two charger in the garage. I run hybrid 99% of the time, and have never used electric only. On a usual ten mile round trip the engine will run for about .6 of a mile and battery for everything else. My only complaint on my Jeep is I took a rock into my Gorrilla Glass windshield and Jeep says they will replace it for 1300.00 not including installation. I would recommend not getting that upgrade.

THank you for taking the time to do all this. I have a 40 mile commute to work one way everyday of the week. I've tried the M8 method a couple times but found in my particular driving situation it made little difference. I charge every night at home and can get 26-28 miles of pure electric range. The other 60 miles of my 80 mile round trip are in the regular hybrid mode and I've been average 31-32 mpgs. @@joegonz1983 Can you charge in the middle? For about the first 60+ miles, it gets around 30+ MPG. Hello, great video with very interesting information, What is the difference between e-save mode and M8 mode? Greetings from Spain, Europe.
@Wrangler4XEFans
@Wrangler4XEFans 6 месяцев назад
Esave is a mode you can select on the left side of the steering wheel. Esave either holds the charge in the battery where it is or charges the battery. Both modes come at the cost of using more gas. M8 is when you pull the shifter to the left and shift manually. In hybrid mode, it blends both the electric motors and the gas engine. People use M8 when the battery is charged to make the battery last longer. From an energy perspective, it isn’t any better than using up the electric range then going in to hybrid mode. But a lot of people have come to believe it’s better because the MPG calculator on the dash says it is. But if you calculate the electrical energy used and the gas used, it all comes out about the same. But in the winter, you can use the shifter to keep the engine from shutting off when you come up to stop signs and such. This prevents oil dilution from short engine runs. Putting it in eSave+charge will keep the engine on too but eSave uses more gas.

Thanks for the effort you put into this. I was wondering about that myself. Silly question time: I have about 6k miles after just under 1 year and my charge never goes over 99%. I noticed this at about 4k miles and a couple of months ago. The electric range is still about the same but it bothers me to not get that 100%. Is this normal? FTR the charging cycle shows complete and I only use the level 1 charger that came with my Rubicon.
@Wrangler4XEFans
@Wrangler4XEFans 2 года назад
Mine very seldom gets to 100%. When it does, it jumps to 99% by the time I back out of the driveway. That percentage is a software anyway. The 4XE has a 17.5kWh battery but we only use 17.3kWh. So that 100% state isn’t really 100%.

The dash MPG calculation in "blended" Hybrid mode does not calculate correctly for this "hidden" mode as it only counts pure electric range as electric and this mode keeps that from being "counted". This then throws off the basic calculation of MPG for the Hybrid, which uses the electric equivalent energy of 33.7 kilowatt-hours / gallon of gasoline equivalent. As it is not counting the electric usage properly this calculation is thrown off. That is why M8 / Blended Hybrid Mode display MPG is not correct.
@Chimpware
@Chimpware 2 года назад
Also what are you referring to as Actual MPG? Is it miles driven divided by gallons of gasoline - ignoring electric energy in the calculation? If that is the case I get 66.7/2.321 = 28.7 MPG for the Blended Hybrid Mode case and 66.5/1.957 = 34.0 MPG for the standard Hybrid Mode. If it is based on gasoline only miles / gallons of gasoline I get 65.8/2.321=28.3 MPG for M8 and 45.6/1.957 = 34.0 MPG for standard Hybrid Mode. If I use the gasoline equivalent of the electric used (33.7 kWh/gallon) I get 28.5 MPG and 30.5 MPG respectively. In any case I agree with your conclusion that standard Hybrid Mode seems to be about 7% more efficient.
