Thanks a lot for this video! I sculpted the model and wanted to pose it (not animate it) and i realised I should've sculpted it in pose because posing it correctly would require rigging it (which i was avoiding because the sculpt is too high poly). So I rigged it and the green circles weren't doing anything, which made me think my model hasn't been rigged correctly. I tried to find how the rig control works but almost everyone has the video to rig the character, and didn't explain how to pose them next. Your video helped me to understand it, thank you so much!

It's three years later and I am doing the CGDive Blender Rigify 4.0 course, and this is the freaking missing piece! An updated version of this should be in the Rigify 4.0 course, but in the mean time this is SO helpful!
@CGDive
@CGDive 3 месяца назад
Thanks, yeah, I am considering it. Are there any parts that you felt needed to be updated?
@thelaughinghyenas8465
@thelaughinghyenas8465 3 месяца назад
@@CGDive, Your voice echoes badly in the old one. Clear titles would help. Updating those production values would help. Most of the time, people will want to pose people. The Indian guy with the fully functional face would be a better choice. Someone in ch 4 will have the ch 4 model to work with. That way you can reference to go to the posing section for posing techniques as soon as the end of chapter 3. The CH 6/CH 7 example model doesn't have that kind of human controls. You really need face posing. This course doesn't cover how to do that at all. Oh we can kind of guess, but there's a LOT of controls in there and how to integrate it all together to do anything close to what we want is tough. Posing and animation would at least as worthy of a whole course as weight painting, especially if you break it down to basic body posing (up to karate kicks), fine wrist and hand control, basic animating, basic expressions, basic automation to do tasks like moving faces into the positions for speaking, overlaying speech on the animation, and then integrating the whole thing with interaction of the models from earlier courses into a final short video where a guy is out walking his dog and the two headed ogre comes running up and screams that a monster is coming and then comes the chapter 6/7 thing or the dragon. I would buy that in a heartbeat!
@thelaughinghyenas8465
@thelaughinghyenas8465 3 месяца назад
@@CGDiveWhen you say that the image you have isn't distributable, why not change it to one that is? Wikimedia creative commons - search for karate kick. I really recommend EVD-kumite-119.jpg - once you see it you will instantly know it's the one. You can just directly attribute it.

Fantastic! This has been so needed. Most people skip over HOW to utilize the rigs. You make the whole thing understandable. Thanks! And I appreciate how you provided a practical example for posing. Now I have to figure out best practices for how to make practical animations. For example, if I want to make a character run and then jump, I realize I can make a run-in-place action, and then pose a squat action, and then I can make a pose/action where the arms go up and legs straighten, but should I be moving the root bone to make the character rise into the air, or should I animate the torso and limbs relative to the root bone that remains on the ground? I'm guessing from your "flying kick" example that you leave the root bone on the ground, since that looked very much like a mid-jump pose. I bet you have a video on this topic too, so I'll look-your videos are so helpful!
@CGDive
@CGDive 3 года назад
This is a complex question. It doesn't have a simple answer. Both approaches are ok. Moving the root can often make it easier to move the whole character. But it may create feet sliding. Moving the torso and feet entails more work but gives you good control over the IK legs. There is also a way to use the root and then bake the foot action to world space. I just recorded some videos about that for my advanced Rigify course. I will release them soon. I'll try to share something about that on YT as well.

Great episode! I'd even suggest to put this one much earlier chronologically as it's more 'basic' and interesting. Is there a way to turn the "In front" option only for some selected bones,my rig feels messy if I turn on "in front" but if I dont turn it on ,then rig controls wont be visible,I just want shoulder bone to have "in front " option?
@CGDive
@CGDive 3 года назад
I don't think that's possible even tho I get it and I think it's a good idea. To reduce the mess in the rig you should generally hide stuff that is not visible. Another option to tweak the custom shape of the shoulder bone so that it's visible even without "In front". A video on editing the custom shape is on the list :)

Much thanks for this! It's the best series on Rigify I've found yet. A small grumble - there's a few issues in the current version of the free CH8_posing.blend file for the chapter. It has Auto IK already enabled, so until I reached the bit explaining Auto IK I was confused by the FK controls doing apparent IK stuff. Also it's got the automatic bending turned off in the tail, and the figure mesh is blue even in solid shading mode so it's still hard to see the tweak controls (the material's been given a blue color in the Viewport Shading section of the Materials tab).

Thank you for the course, do you have any pro-tips for how to animate individual movement on timeline? I am able to move the body parts, but they are not recorded on the timeline. Looking at other tutorials but still confusing. Thank you!

I think you need to work how the animation system works in Blender. I have a playlist :) ru-vid.com/group/PLdcL5aF8ZcJvaLgirnTuH8-4Ro5Ou-YsZ

may have missed it but is there a module for hand rigging in the course?

In my advanced tutorial I have a chapter on that. I may add something about that on RU-vid at some point :)

At 10:55 why is it when u switch from ik to fk the mesh/leg moved back to its original position ? I mean if you animate the character with ik then switch to fk to make changes it should stay in the ik position right ? Whats the point of the ik fk switch then.it just makes it difficult to animate like this.any thoughts ?

Did you watch the part about the arm just before the leg? There I show how to snap the positions IK/FK so you get a seamless switch.

Why I haven`t "Rig main properties" panel and "Rig Layers" even in pose mode when I select one of rigify components ?
@CGDive
@CGDive 2 года назад
There is a script that creates this menu. If you open a Rigify file and you don't load the script, the menu won't be created. Also if you append the rigify rig, you also have to append the script and run it manually. The script is called rig_ui or something like that so try to find and run it.

My mesh behaves okay with the metarig without need for weight painting, but it behaves weirdly with the generated rig. Is this normal?

Is there any add-on accompanying rigify for automatic walk cycle? And can you recommend a tutor for learning walking cycle? Thanks for your great tutorials
@CGDive

Check out gumroad.com/l/prKPo . It creates auto walk cycles for Rigify. Not sure about a tutorial, but I am sure you can find many if you search on YT or Google.
