Tony Conza, Peter DeCarlo, and Angelo Baldassare were on the verge of completing high school. The trio eventually pooled enough money to open a business. That business was Blimpie, and they sold sub sandwiches. However, it wasn’t want, they thought. Blimpie, a well-known American sub sandwich chain, has a rich history that dates back to 1964 when it was founded by three friends: Tony Conza, Peter DeCarlo, and Angelo Baldassare in Hoboken, New Jersey. The name "Blimpie" was inspired by the successful launch of a NASA spacecraft called the "Gemini 3," which featured a suborbital trajectory, reflecting the founders' ambition to launch a successful sandwich business. Blimpie quickly gained popularity for its freshly made-to-order submarine sandwiches, filled with a variety of cold cuts, veggies, and condiments. Their focus on quality and customization appealed to customers seeking a tasty and customizable meal. Over the years, Blimpie expanded its menu to include hot sandwiches, wraps, salads, and soups, catering to a broader range of tastes. It also grew its presence across the United States and internationally through franchising. In 2001, Blimpie merged with the Kahala Corporation, which owns several other restaurant brands, further expanding its reachThey failed, got things right and eventually decided to part ways. I always preferred Blimpies over Subway back in the 70s, but they gradually started disappearing.

Their biggest mistake was placing franchises at gas stations. It devalued them to the point of being gross.

Blimpie was in the gas station near my home growing up. It was the closest “fast food” being it was rural Montana. I adored the meatball subs as a young boy. I’m pretty sure I’m obsessed with black olives because of this place 🤔

We had one in Rosenberg Texas. It even had intercoms on the gas pumps where you could order while pumping gas. Blimpies didn't even last 2 years before they closed down. But those intercoms stayed on those gas pumps 20+ years until they remodeled a few years back.

The one on Willoughby Street in Brooklyn is now sadly a Sam’s Pearl St. Deli. Blimpie is pretty much dead NYC.

Oh wow! When I lived in Brooklyn way back then I would stop in there for a Blimpie burger on my way home from work. Also Blimpie subs would have soooo much meat on them. Subway was a shock to me with how little meat they used!

@@ChrisannaDaye I agree Subway be skimpy with the ingredients and $3 more for 2 extra slices of deli meat. Lenwich makes great heros but they’re like $17.

I was a Blimpie fan during their 80's n 90's heyday. Too bad they kinda became the KMart of sub chains in they were top of the food chain and later got passed by and left in the dust by more progressive and better managed competition.

I have only seen 1 Blimpies my entire life. Right after I graduated (1994) they built a Shell gas station/Blimpies sandwich shop here in the Houston area. It had intercom boxes by the gas pumps where you could order your sandwich while pumping gas. I don't think they even lasted 2 years there and they closed down never to be seen again. And those Blimpie intercoms stayed on those gas pumps 20+ years until they remodeled the gas station just a few years ago.

I've only seen two locations in my entire life. One opened up where I lived in California all the way back in 2000, and closed in less than a year. The same thing happened years later in Arizona, just opened up and about 6 months later closed down as if it wasn't even there. At the time my family suspected they were a front for some shady underground business because of how they seemed to come out of nowhere and vanish so quickly.

Simple: they sold out to some corporate suits, and no longer make the sandwiches with the same Italian bread and cold cuts. Recipe for FAILURE. Their original Hoboken location was the BEST. R.I.P. Another delicious Hoboken business gone to crap. Carlos sucks too. No longer making the delicious Sicilian pastries Carlos was known for, nor the crumb cake the German bakery they bought out on Washington St. America has lost authentic Italian American food.

I have to admit, this video is making me hungry. Someone should do a video on the glory days of the cheap-as-hell Kmart sub sandwich. Anyone remember that? Gigantic sub was like 16 inches long, Covered in cheap shredded lettuce, pickles, tomato and mystery turkey meat -wrapped in clear plastic. Doesn't this look good?
