BLISTERING BLUEGRASS 720P-HD | HOT LICKS IN THE SHADE
A blistering heat wave could not dissuade pickers from tonight’s jam. To escape the searing rays of the setting sun, the pickers broke with tradition and set up in the shade of a tree away from the open area beneath the parking lot light. From a musical standpoint, I believe the heat, combined with fresh talent added new energy to the Jam. I strongly recommend watching the full program. There are some incredible unrehearsed gems that may find their way to your heart. For me, “Will You Miss Me When I’m Gone” is such an example, absolutely full of musical - vocal and instrumental - nuances. If possible, listen through really good headphones to isolate the sounds. I think you will be moved.
As you watch, keep in mind this is an OPEN JAM. It is not a rehearsed performance. Each picker, in turn, chooses a tune, and he or she sings or plays it accompanied by all the other pickers. Everyone gets a chance no matter the skill level. It seemed that this Jam was composed mostly of experienced pickers. The Jam meets every Friday evening at 6:30 in the parking lot behind the Pizza Hut at 15840 West Colonial Dr., Ocoee, Florida 34761.
PICKERS:
Jack Lewis - banjo, vocals. (Retired Orlando Utility Co. employee. Also served in U.S. Army 101st Airborne as a paratrooper.)
Gerald Creed - guitar, vocals. Retired maintenance employee of commercial bakery.
Johnny Adams - mandolin, guitar, vocals. Retired aerospace and defense company employee, mandolin leuthier.
Bill Miller - upright bass, Land surveyor.
Doug Buchheister - mandolin, vocals. Public school teacher.
James Vickers - banjo, guitar, mandolin, vocals
Jerry Jernigan - guitar. Pipe welder.
Tim Clifford - mandolin. Computer software sales & marketing for banking industry.
Joe Hennessey - guitar
Cody Nieves - banjo, mandolin
Jim Kornmeyer - banjo, guitar, vocal. College professor.
Dr. Richard Gallo - guitar, vocal. Doctor of Veterinary Medicine
Denise - ribbed crow sounder, vocals. Retired military, Army Airborne.
Adam - guitar, vocals. Sales
TECH NOTES: After sunset, the video was shot in near darkness, without the parking lot lighting characteristic of other videos. This is the reason for the loss in usual image quality. In this case, picker comfort gained from moving under the big shade tree was well worth the great sound.

An answer to Michael Moore’s question about the name of the tune at marker 13:14. Courtesy of an excellent mandolinist, Steve Houseman. The tune in this video At 13:14 is “Theme Time” a banjo tune written by Bill Emerson. A great banjo player who played with The Country Gentlemen, had a band with Cliff Waldron ,played in Country Current ( the US Navy Bluegrass band), recently fronted a band Bill Emerson & Sweetdixie. Very influential banjo player. Recently inducted IBMA Hall of Fame. Wrote several more tunes including “Sweet Dixie” , “Cowboys & Indians” , and more. A great musician.

Hot or cool, any day is a good day for bluegrass. Hopefully we won't get rained out tonight. The report is 30 percent chance of thundershowers. The video is interesting, but acoustic instruments aren't well suited to thunderstorms and rain. Thanks for the post.

Dave, I think this week brought some very special pickers into the mix, and the regulars were really cooking as well. The chemistry made a great jam. Thanks for your insight.

Thanks for another great Jam Vivatones66. I am just a simple vine yard worker i wonder if it would be ok for you to tell us more about what this great lot of pickers do in their day jobs, ok if its getting too personnel. Thanks again . cheers from down under
@vivatones66

That is an interesting question and a great idea to include in the next video. I think I'll include a brief snippet of video of each picker explaining in his own words to sort of personalize it. Thanks for the idea.

This seems to be a really great idea as I see most of the pickers as part of my family. Would be fine to know more about them. I'm looking forward to getting to know "my family" that lives and "picks" exactly 7,915 km away from me.

Hello, my Australian friend. The Jam last Friday ended due to heavy lightning and rain, but I managed to get some information on your question about the pickers' day jobs before the bottom fell out. I didn't have time to break out the video gear and record the responses, so I'll add the information to the list of PICKERS in the video notes. Will try to add more next time.

It was a very hot July night in Central Florida. The listeners ("grinners") come and go and often sit in their air-conditioned cars when the weather is so hot. And, my focus is mostly on the pickers. Glad you liked the video. Thanks for the post.

WONDERFUL: I don't see any smoking or drinking or hear any foul language. Women and girls are modestly dressed and lady like. No tatoos or body piercing.

@@jimjackson7878 Thank you for your heartfelt comment, Jim. All I can do now is respond to postings, since I am unable to get out to the parking lot due to failed health. I would give anything to get back out there with the gang, but it doesn’t seem to be in God’s plan and I trust Him. In the meantime, it’s fulfilling to be able to interact with my friends online.
