BLOATED MESS - Why Hazbin Hotel could have been better

The thing about the redemption plot is that we need CLEAR and DIRECT rules on how would it work. Personally, I would replace the "we don't know how to get into Heaven" lines with something along the lines of "If it even is possible, your redemption would only be achieved if you somehow, while in Hell, counterbalance and surpass the weight of EVERY SINGLE SIN AND BAD ACTION YOU TOOK WHILE ALIVE, AND IN HELL, with an equally if not greater good action that comes not from a desire to escape punishment, but for the sake of being a better person." That way, not only would you have a clear way to decide how sinners could be redeemed, that makes sense, but also would give stakes to the path of redemption, since the worse the sin that got you into hell, the harder it will be for any sinner to achieve redemption. For example, let's put two sinners here, a shoplifter that killed two people, and a genocidal dictator that ruined the lives of millions. The shoplifter would need to see the error of their way, actively pursue betterment for themselves, and maybe save the lives of multiple people while keeping an altruistic mindset. Relatively simple. The dictator, on the other hand, would be almost impossible to redeem. They would need to actively regret their actions, somehow get enough power legally and without cheap or evil tricks to rule a good enough portion of the sinners, and actively try to improve hell, the lives of the sinners, and the conditions of the world.

The fact that no one ever figured out that angels can be killed by their own weapons for tens of thousands of years is fucking insane to me. Not only does this imply that no one in Hell was ever bold or crazy enough to try attacking angels with their own weapons across all of human history, but it also implies angels never spar with one another for training, which would either require them to use their actual weapons and thus figure out they can be harmed by them, or training wrapons which they wouldn't use if they didn't think their real weapons could harm them. They also made Vaggie a complete moron just so this could be a revelation. Genuinely some of the shittiest worldbuilding I've seen in any modern media.

Vivzie's projects give off big "fanfic" vibes to me, by which I mean it's as if she's writing her own story based on an already established property and the assumption is anyone engaging would already be aware of the canon of that property so lots of things don't get explained. That's fine to do with a fanfic but when you're creating your own property, you gotta fill the audience in on that kind of stuff.

For an Adult Cartoon taking place in Hell, it barely even classifies as that and it's even supposed to be viewed as a serious show. Edgerunners and Over The Garden Wall also prove you can do alot with little and this isnt A24 or Amazon's fault, this is Viv and her team's, they made the show, they're responsible for the issues.

I originally, a long time ago, said that Hazbin Hotel, along with Helluva Boss, was a Dancing Bear: A show that would be remembered in spite of its quality because it represented something bigger than itself (doesn't matter how the bear dances, it's amazing that it dances at all), by being the first fully animated adult show to make the jump from indie to Mainstream, so no matter any criticisms people have, it will get both love for the sake of love and hate for the sake of hate. I agree with most of your points, because Hell makes no sense, I had a philosophical disagreement with Charlie, and only now realized that the plot made up an excuse for her beliefs,though hell overpopulation makes no sense since Hell is forever, so it's only meant to keep growing. I didn't dislike the show, but I really, really wish I could have loved it.

The idea that Hazbin should be set in limbo instead of Hell is actually brilliant! I feel like that would simplify things too.

Lucifer should have been the actual antagonist of the show. He should hate the idea of his daughter trying to make peace with heaven and redeem sinners from hell. He should be the one manipulating everything behind the scenes to make everything possible go wrong for her, especially stoking the flames of hate, pride, and revenge within Adam's soul leading to an unnecessary conflict in the finale. Lucifer is the father of lies, so he should be lying and deceiving everybody at every turn, while his daughter is in denial that her father could be that cruel even to her. If I were to fix the ending of the last episode here's what I would do: Let's say everything that happens in the finale happens as it does, but God intervenes, stops Lucifer's sabotage plan, the Archangel Michael finally appears and kicks Lucifer's ass (again). Adam does not die (or if he does, God easily resurrects him). God has an important chat Charlie explaining the actual truth about her father as the enemy of man, explaining the falsehoods in her storybook from the opening, why Lucifer was cast out from heaven, and why the exterminations actually happen (to destroy demons who cause havoc on Earth, and the ones that have no repentance left in their souls). God tells her that he's most impressed and pleased that she is the first demon in the history of the entire universe to actually want to seek peace with heaven and ask for help in redeeming them. Charlie is humbled and honored that God took the time to actually speak with her, and approve of her dream. Charlie gets the blessing from God to actually have a hotel that redeem sinners in hell. Bonus: God inspires Vaggie to go on a redemption arc to regain her birthright as an angel in heaven. Charlie and Vaggie amicably split as a couple and she helps Vaggie start getting on the path of redemption to return to heaven as a proper angel again. Lute gets exiled to hell for unjustly punishing Vaggie, and her return to Heaven is conditional upon righting her wrong. Lute and Vaggie become responsible of the others redemption and return to Heaven. Angelic steel gets removed completely from hell, so demons may never be able to use them again. Angels, such as Emily, join the hotel staff and actually help the patrons on the path to Heaven. That legitimately sounds like a better ending than what was actually in the show, and I wish that's how things actually went down, instead of what actually happened. But that's what happens when a narrative is written by writers who are more concerned with how many swear words can they fit into a sentence, what each character's sexuality is, and how to make the evil demons appear as oppressed victims, while making angels look evil for no reason. Instead of things like world building, verisimilitude, and not breaking your own show's premise in the process.

I’m sorry Vivzie wasn’t professional enough to avoid throwing her support behind someone shredding your character design in revenge for you daring to have an unpopular opinion. It says a lot about her that I’m sure there’s thousands of tweets saying hazbin is great that she doesn’t pay attention to and yet someone being petty and nasty to a detractor? “Like!”

Angel Dust and Husk are the only likeable characters to me, and it's because they're both jerks who side with the good guys, meaning they're allowed to have flaws that help develop them as characters instead of remaining fully static like Charlie or Vaggie, whose struggle is external rather than internal. In a world where this season had 14 episodes instead of 8, and the writer's room had longer deadlines[Plus a better script supervisor], Hazbin would have been a masterpiece of Storytelling and existentialism, validating the fact that adult animation doesn't have to be bleak, uninspired, or offensive to be poignant, and that animation is the opposite of a limitation for the expression of ideas. Sadly, this didn't come to pass, because the current effort fails to keep consistency in its own universe and the characters don't have room to develop. To me, it has the same issues that Season 2 of Helluva Boss has, in that the pacing and introduction of new characters every episode takes me away from what is supposed to be a simple but well told story.

Nailed it. _Hazbin Hotel_ has a solid enough premise but doesn't quite succeed in execution. Sure, some of it can be laid at the feet of Amazon forcing them to cram an entire season's worth of plot into just 8 episodes, but we can't also ignore the flaws in the writing itself.

Season 1 would have really benefitted from just fleshing out the main cast and maybe a couple other sinners that come to the hotel, along with just the main premise. The meeting with Adam being an either mid or late season reveal, setting up the war against heaven in season 2. I don’t see why Viv and the crew felt the need to cram all that they did in season 1 if they were already greenlit for a season 2. 8 25 minute episodes just isn’t enough time to work all of those major plot points in what they were given.

I wanna know how Charlie got her belief (believing sinners could be redeemed). I wanna see a scene where maybe… Lucifer told her a bedtime story (maybe legend) about demons redeeming themselves. Maybe Lucifer had a mental break and told her his theory. My point is… It would be nice to see why Charlie believes what she does! Because right now, it just seems like… “My people are dying. Let’s put them somewhere else! Heaven exists! Let’s put them there.”

I agree with you on the abrehamic aspects hold the show back a bit. Heck, I made myself some notes about what if the show was inspired by Celtic lore and was about a long time turf war beteren the Seelie and Unseelie Courts and have the Tuatha De Dannan in place of the angels and their influence on humans, dating back to the interactions of humans and faeries. I mean, just look up half of the Irish fae folk, they're creepy buggers that can give the Vs a run for their money and rub elbows with Alestor. Deconstruction of abrehamic beliefs has been done way too much already. Celtic myth is still very obscure in mainstream media minus for the mythology nerds like myself.

I feel that 1 season is wrote Like it's 1, 2 and 3 seasons combined. And show about redemption ends it's first season with war between Heaven and Hell. I was so sure Charlie would create purgatory at the end, not kill buch of angels, while she still want her people go to heaven. We were promised different show on pilot and got something, while good, it's not what I was waiting for.

Hazbin Hotel sucks (kind of), and if this show didn't have the nearly decade of hype and support backing it up people would be able to more easily recognize the glaring flaws in this show, but instead they give this show special treatment because of how sentimental it is to them and ignore all of the bad aspects of the show due to the rose-tinted glasses they're wearing.

Either it’s going to be revealed that the Annual Exterminations were used by Adam and company as petty revenge or that one of the overlords (most likely Alastor) will become too powerful and try to challenge Lucifer and Heaven, thus justifying the Exterminations.

Glad I'm not the only one who thinks that Helluva Boss and Hazbin Hotel don't seem to mesh. Helluva Boss has shown humans are, as a species, irredeemably callous and hateful to fit with the dark comedy as well as not make I.M.P. seem too terrible for killing them en masse. However, this sabotages the premise of Hazbin Hotel where so many people ending up in Hell being unfair. The sinners are in Hell because they were terrible people. Maybe Charlie should be working on making humans better people before they die. I've seen using Hell as a setting as a crutch in all this. It's an excuse to use demonic designs, liberal profanity, and gratuitous violence and debauchery. So much had to be changed for the plot to work, it does not feel like Heaven and Hell or even a commentary on Heaven and Hell. Death in Hell is perhaps the best example. Why would the angels even bother with damnation if they're concerned with overpopulation in Hell and can just destroy a soul? I've seen some people, even here, suggest going with something else. However, they would require more work and would not have the benefit of familiarity with the audience. Hell is easy, or at least they thought so. Supposedly, there will be more explanations of things in the future. However, I think basing this in Hell required a lot more pipe to be laid rather than less. And Viv is not a professional. Being overly defensive about criticism and questioning the credentials of people far more published than she is tells me they're not ready for prime time. It also tells me that we cannot expect criticism to get through to make the show better going forward. A shame this is the first truly breakout for indie animation, but oh well.

I guess when people say hazbin hotel “glamorizes” sa, it’s not that at all. It’s fetishization considering one of the people that storyboarded the poison sequence was a person who actively shipped Val and angel dust as a “rape ship”, that’s what so many people especially on twitter are peeved about,

I feel this story has so many issues. It just feels very convoluted. The one thing that puzzles me and I still don't get is hell is supposed to be a punishment. I would understand that Redeeming Sinners would be a good premise if hell was actually some sort of punishmeant which it technically isn't. Like you can die in hell and just respond. Because you can't die in hell unless you get killed by an angelic weapon. Which is a hole in the bag of worms But yeah, hell itself is not really a punishment in this series. As you can do whatever you want. The only downside to hell is you can owe people your soul and become indebted to them for all eternity. But that's not a big deal if you just don't do that I mean, all sinners in the show from what I've read Have abilities and powers as soon as they die and go to hell So why would you need to feel pressured to be redeemed? Other than the fact that a purge will end you.

I think another flaw this show is that Adam and Lute join a long line of designated villains who suffer real loss and go through something of a hero's journey, while Charlotte Morningstar dances in plarmor that makes Rey Palpatine's look like a red shirt.

(Heads up , this is long and i apologize before hand.) Its sad several reviewers have had to preface that they are fans of the show before getting to any sort if critisism. I still remember what happened to cartoonshi, among others. Even some fans that made redesigns of the characters got dragged. Its gross but i am sure the bulk of that is stannies getting their fav thing looked at with anything less than a favorable eye. You should be able to be critical or constructive of something regardless of liking it or not. Like, its a baaic fact of life that your favorite things can and will be criticized . Even by you! I have dragged my own fav things. you'll live. Viv hasnt stopped making anything despite the critisism (in some cases she kept doing the thing but worse. ). Also viv has shown to be very petty on social media and she should probably get off it and get a pr agent for it. The proof is in the pudding. This is hardly the first time she's done this, its been going on for years. Regardless, I'm glad many can find things great about the show , or still enjoy it despite its flaws. Its not for me, nor is any of Viv's work...i don't care for musicals either so that was a bust. Despite me veing a fan or not, Hazbin hotel's writing indeed suffers and no amount of tuning out of explaining will change that. It is an inherent flaw to stick vital information outside the show (i refuse to even dignify that.) , the plot is everywhere and makes no sense, the representation to me is often tacked on (ive been hoping the people saying velvet, and the others were meant to be black were lying. They're grey!with no black adjacent features or coding, why eben add it on???), it can not maintain a balance serious and un-serious topics: it lacks maturity and balance for me. I know folks like the designs and adt is subjective and all but they aren't for me... and not a day goes by that i don't feel for the animators, even with the reworks. It is indeed a show mostly for fans and not a general adult audience, it shows in the world building and character presentation. I genuinely wonder what the show would be like with a different writer and viv just making suggestions, because she is not a good writer -nor whomever esle who aided in this. And to me the "it only had 8 episodes is not a good explanation because plenty of shows have had the same or less episodes and were able to establish a plot, character motivations , decent world building , and an end point for the season. I'd love if the show was more focused on Charlie and the reception, I'd love for charlie and vaggie to have had more chemistry and time, I'd love if vaggie had more of a presence in story and... honestly have more sense. I'd love if it didn't turn into the "alastor and angel show" my two most disliked characters in the whole series. (Alistair being the voodu adjacent plot blackhole he is with his blend into the background design , and angel. i simply dont like angel. I tried. ) i get why people like them and why folks like "loser baby" but for me nah. Nah. Like if people constantly misunderstand the meaning or intent of the song, and need it explained to them- the the writing is the problem. I've seen so many people state they had a problem with that scene/song only for others to step up and explain it wasn't meant that way, when sadly i still felt the same about it. Plus i don't appreciate how angel continually got in husk's space but somehow husk had to apologize to him in the episode? Like it was flat out glossed over. Also the contrast of episodes 4 and 5 cement my feelings of how the show undoes its serious points with its attempts at humor. Show could have showed development if angel or someone intervened or said something meta like "we literally had a whole episode about this shit, don't start." And god , the angel weapons killing both demons and angels would both make sense and add lore intrigue if they simply pointed out that "demons are fallen angels, thats why blessed weapons work on them. ". It begs the question of why angels have weapons that could hurt themselves? But it could also hint at a war between themselves. After all. Demons came from somewhere. Vaggie should have been the one to say something, her sense and agency in this story is nonexistent. I agree though. The show is bloated because its unrefined. It threw away the premise presented in the pilot episode one. It feels like it was animated before the plot was fully written out. I appreciate your insights, even if i have different likes and dislikes from you. The fact people are discussing hazbin from different viewpoints shows that despite its problems it was still successful. Just wish it was done better.

You people are all saying that Hazbin should've had more episodes, but what makes you think that it would've been better? I'm sure if there were more episodes in the series, Viv would've just stuffed more things into the series instead of just giving what we already had time to breathe.

I am deeply religious, and a show like this could have been an interesting subversive story...how i wish for these shows to be more than what they became! I love dark, dangerous, violent stories, and there are glimmers of good things in all that Viviane does; let's hope she improves!

The only main problem I have with Hazbin Hotel is the fast pacing making the first season felt rushed. Overall it’s a good show, but I hope they fix the pacing issues in season two.

It would be great if it was revealed that demons / sinners that die a second death end up in Tartarus (Hell 2.0) and when one (of the many) 'main' characters die and don't get redeemed takes us there. It's then revealed that Hell 2.0 is just as overpopulated and is busting at the seams as everyone is just rezapped constantly into existence. However, each time they die they lose more and more of their original personality and humanity and become true mindless demons. These are the things that prey on you when you're 'double dead'. Huh. That might be too dark and horrific for an adult kids show though, hehe.

I personally think angel should have been the one to sacrifice himself and go to heaven considering he had the most character development, but Viv probably has more plot lines to tie up with him in hell so it just wouldn't work. Sir pentious as a character didn't really do much after the second episode. He was just kind of 'there'

Warning... LONG comment. They should have cut MOST of the plot lines and put in maybe only Angel Redemption where you can focus on it. Let this one idea be focused on and be well developed. Let it be the overarching goal of the season. Redeeming your first sinner and make it feel impactful so even if you do not have a season 2 you still have one cohesive story with beginning, middle and end that can end on an impactful and hopeful note as you explore what it means to redeem someone and feel the weight of redemption when it finally happens. You can explore in depth the most important element of the story, the thing that this story is build upon and what the titular Hotel is all about. Redemption. Through that you can delve into Angel's character, show his flaws and issues that he has to overcome, sins he committed in life he has to atone for and get over and people that he hurt through them. Delve into this idea and explore it as much as you can and when redemption happens you know how much it takes to redeem someone and what it means. And then if you DO get Season 2 you can show this happen a lot faster with more sinners and that would lead to sense of progression around which you can write more drama. Maybe with Charlie who may be getting more and more conflicted as she sees people she grows to care about go away. Also this allows you to take more time with character interactions. Make them more varied. Maybe through trying to get this one person redeemed you can have everyone contribute in their own way where you can either learn more about them, Angel or both and around that can be made unique interactions between ALL of the characters and it lets you explore more of the hotel which helps you care about it. And it also can lead you to introduce more characters, but those would be all centered around this story and one goal, making it make sense and be cohesive when they show up. It would immensely help with character interactions which are LAUGHABLY sparse as characters barely interact with one another besides the ship pairs like Vaggie and Charlie or Husk and Angel where neither of those even have much of a chemistry at all and require the audience to already be invested in those. Which makes the entire cast feel very shallow. Not to mention that we barely spend any time at the hotel and we see barely any location inside it besides the main hall so when it finally is broken we feel nothing as we barely got to know that location. And it's fixed in ONE song. That's not how you do it. Think about it. All of those emotional beats. First redeemed sinner. Death of Pentious. Death of Dazzle. Destruction of the Hotel. Appearance of Heaven. All of it feels WEAK as none of those ideas were given proper time and so they are barely noticeable. And that was the ONLY chance Viv had at doing those. And she wasted them on this rushed season. And let me tell you. If I had a choice between putting all of my ideas into one story and almost all of them being underdeveloped and bad in execution or putting fewer ones and letting them be developed into something great then I choose the latter. People may not see all of my ideas, but those they will, they will remember and looked back at fondly. Something I DO NOT think will happen with this. My idea for seasons of this series would be like this: Season 1 - redeeming first Sinner who is Angel Dust and main villain is Val. Exploration of Angel and many other characters through trying to get him to achieve redemption where each character gets explored as they try to help out in their own way and either you learn more about Angel or a member of the cast. Ends on Angel ascending and Val beaten and killed by other Vees who in this version may be abused by him and they end up being antagonists of next season. Season 2 - Other 2 Vees become antagonists as Charlie is now redeeming far more sinners, but she starts to grow weary as she realizes she will be alone eventually which Alastor also exploits to corrupt her. Ends on maybe Velvette being killed as Vox himself may find a way to also attain more power and Charlie becomes more corrupted and destroys a lot of her work while Alastor regrets his actions. Season 3 - Dealing with Vox and fixing Charlie. Heaven is now being more hinted at and Lucifer himself is now far more involved (who is not as positive character as in the show). Eventually leads to Heaven getting closer as Hotel stops working during this time and population increases again. Season 4- Heaven and Hell in conflict as everyone tries to fix their mistakes. Maybe ends with both Heaven and Hell now rejecting the main crew as maybe at the end Hazbin Hotel becomes actual Purgatory where sinners can be judged when they die. Abandoned by both Hell and Heaven Charlie and those who remain can forge their own paradise and their own purpose beyond Mandates of Heaven and Cruelty of Hell.

Watching both helluva boss and hazbin hotel has made me go "Three Strikes- YOUR OUT!" In regards to the writing of the three seasons we have available to us. I'll still watch both series because the animation is good and there is occasionally a good moment. But other than that, both shows are a bit too shallow and poorly thought out for my taste.

Ok Mad just want to say. Judaism doesnt believe in hell. Actually there is no singular jewish belief of the afterlife. Some jews believe in a kindoff purgatory called Gehenem(which is a temporary suffering for your sins and if someone is evil enough just ends in oblivion not eternal suffering) some believe in nothing after death, some in a heaven. There is no clear jewish belief of the afterlife. Just wanted to add that because you say abrahamic alot and while redemption and a divine plan are innate to judaism. Hell and Heaven are not and most jews dont believe in hell even those that believe in the afterlife or a purgatory. Sorry if this was rude. This video is great. Just wanted to make that addition

I think Vivzipop needs a chill pill because well she should have expected this to get hate but mostly critique on her animated show as soonest it hit the big leagues. Again it's not bad oh no but it does look like it got rushed like a lot.

I often compare this show to Devil's Carnival because I feel like Devil's Carnival is Hazbin Hotel done correctly

So death in hell isn’t permanent. It’s a quick sentence that Velvette states, “It will take that b!tch all day to pull herself together” which is supposed to tell the audience that sinners can be hurt as much as they want, but have to pull themselves together if something does happen. (Also Sinner bleed red and demons bleed black). I knew this fact beforehand, so it didn’t fly over my head but if I know some fans or new people didn’t get it. So, the only really death can be is from angelic weapons. I do think Camila keeps stock of the weapons she gives and knows that she never gave Vaggie one. But that’s probably a theory. I’m slowly thinking the packed season was planned because it makes people want to watch it over it again since you want to see all the details, so you got to watch it multiple times. I watched it coming out then watched it a few weeks afterwards where I caught more details. Thank you for the Angel talk because I always feel like people miss it especially with the song. I immediately felt what Husk’s message was and I think Husk has also some things going on. I guess this is more fan’s eyes/theory; but Husk seems to be dealing with the bad stuff the opposite way of Angel. Angel tries to embrace it and as you stated deal with the trauma while Husk blocks/buries it. All in all the series wasn’t perfect but I definitely think it was supposed to get the fans hype to make the companies see “oh people want more of this: money time!”

2:19 I'm all for trying to explain away inconsistencies, but there's a difference between "Well, maybe we could look at it like this" and "This is _clearly_ what the writers were going for." A problem common with fanboys is that they'll convince themselves that their head canon is definitely what the writers intended and look down on anyone who doesn't buy it. They can't seem to accept that sometimes, writers make mistakes. And at the end of the day, it's the writers' job to explain this stuff, not the fans. You do make good points on how well the first episode serves as an introduction. While the episode does establish the conflict and the personalities of the main cast members, I could see a newcomer being left wondering how things got to this point and how each resident of the hotel ended up there. While I'm in favor of keeping the pilot canon and I wouldn't have wanted to see a remake of it, I do think that episode one could have been written to be a bit more welcoming to people who haven't watched the original pilot. 12:20 I admit that I was surprised at how much taller Alastor was to Lucifer. 16:05 Given how cynical Vaggie is, I had always wondered if she genuinely believed that redemption was possible or if she was just pretending to believe it because she wanted to support Charlie. It could have been interesting to see a rift form between them when Charlie realizes that Vaggie doesn't actually believe in the cause, but they ended up going a different direction. 23:55 I actually committed myself to watching one episode per week and it's precisely because I've been waiting for this show for several years and didn't want the experience to be over too quickly. I don't blame other people for not doing the same, and even patient people might have had trouble holding back given how long it's been since the pilot was released. 24:10 I've always thought that this would hold "Hazbin Hotel" back. People have had years to build up their own ideas for the show and characters and even people trying to keep an open mind might have trouble letting go of concepts that they were really attached to. Some people may even have ended up feeling that certain fanworks handled the premise better than the actual show did. On the other hand, I haven't personally come across many instances of people complaining that the show was weaker than the fanon and I'm not sure it ended up being much of a factor. 30:32 For as many problems as the show has, I doubt this this something that'll be glossed over. I don't know how the writers overlooked this or even if there was any logic to Vaggie not realizing that the weapon that can hurt her can kill angels. Thinking about Blitzo's line "He can get hurt?", I can at least assume that while Blitzo knew logically that there were weapons that can hurt Stolas, it didn't truly feel real to him until he saw it for himself. But with this, I'm at a total loss on how to explain it away.

The 1 universal criticism is the show didn't have enough 'time" (be it run time or Episodes, probably both) to tell its story, it REALLY needed like 4 more episodes. (god know Hellvua Boss has gotten longer with time) That the thing about Hasbin Hotel, you can FEEL there is something good here, but then it fumbles by adding too much stuff for what little time it has. Thus it gives off the feeling of being RUSHED. Like lets be real, the best parts of the show are the ones that focus on the Characters rather then the plot. Hasbin Hotel since I saw the pilot felt like it was supposed to be a Character driven show. Does make ya wonder what they are gonna do with Season 2. Cus as it stands the Status Que between Heaven and Hell has been SHATTERED, Charlie's hotel is doing better then ever, and now we have Alastor and Lilith as future Antagonists/Villens. If the Purge is no longer a problem, then maybe we can get back to the whole "redemption arc" of all the Characters. (Sir Pentious and Vaggie seem to have found their Redemption, so i guess that leaves Angel Dust and Husk?)

See, I love this show. I enjoy the type of storytelling with unapologetic swearing etc, the animation is gorgeous. My biggest issue is it's fast pace and quick introductions to a very large cast. As someone who writes my own stories with Ensemble casts, I understand how hard it is to properly manage it. However, maybe because I'm a long standing fan, but I never had an issue following along with the premise, the character introductions or understanding the established lore without relying on outside sources. What I like is that you do also get references or teasers to things that long term fans would notice like Angels siblings etc. I love that the show is not only able to tackle serious topics maturely, but also be unapologetic fun. Even with it's fast pacing everything ran smoothly, could it have benefit from filler episodes? 100%. But the reason it didn't have any which most people I've seen don't notice is it's structured exactly like a musical which explains the pacing issues as well. Overall I prefer it to Helluva Boss which leaned too heavily into the romance drama side but even so I find both enjoyable. Is it a 10/10 masterpiece? No, but does it have to be to be fantastic? Also no.

Overlords gain power by the amount of souls they have. Souls are treated as money, though a sinner soul is more valuable in which the Overlords own their lives as well, depending on the contracts. The Overlords are against extermination because it’s like losing money, they own the sinners so when they die by angelic weapons the Overlords lose a soul. Valentino owns Angel Dust soul, having Angel work in the Porn Studio but doesn’t have authority to outside the studio as part of the deal. Alastor owns Husk soul due to Husk, being an Overlord at the time, keeps gambling away souls to the point of losing his own soul to Alastor and now has to work for him. So the more souls the Overlords own through deal making the powerful they can be.

The show is not very good. Which to me is a shame since I was looking forward to it.

I think Viv has great ideas and exciting designs but the problem is she doesn't know how to execute them properly. I was hoping Hazbin would be better, but it seems like Viv is trying extremely hard to make sure her stories contain everything. There are so many plotlines and characters that we didn't need in Season 1. This has been a problem she's had for a while, too, because this reminds me a lot of Helluva Boss. I'm hoping she'll fix this in season 2

I really love what Viv have been able to do with this, all the artist contributing and making this show at the same time making Helluva Boss. Now while that is cracy it´s still no subsitute to proper produced shows, even thought nowdays it´s hard to find any show from the west I like or that is done in a way I like. I belive the biggest draws for me is the style of the drawings, the songs and setting. It´s so intresting and fun and I do like that the animation even thought limited in some aspects still pushes on other things especially if you compare to other adult animated shows. Like when the characters move thier hair waves with them, imagine that being something unusual for animation overall. But now I don´t know much about religion, I did find it intresting that this is´t just Christianity but the Abraham as you mentioned, all I know is old testament and old hewbrew folk mythology and there is where you get all the demons like Stolas and description of the deadly sins and even Lilith. Like when I heard the opening to the Hazbin show and it told about how Lilith strayed away from Adam I thought it was something Viv added but no when I read up on it that is what it was, Lilith was deemed a demon becuse she wanted to be on top of Adam. Like wow it´s no joke. I fully agree 8 episodes ain´t enough for this story, but at the same time if you get a chance like this you may only have 8 episodes so tell the story you wanna tell, now with season 2 they can hopefully make a proper well paced show but I don´t belive it will be much diffrent, maybe better focused but it will still feel cramed, they will still do 2 songs per episode and I also belive they will have so many characters, but it might get focused on the ones introduced. Like episode 5-8 felt like season finaly episodes after 20 other episodes. Or if they atleast had 5 more but again we can´t always guarante it, it´s still an indie studio getting some help from a small Studio A24 and Bento Box that is a small animation studio, even with the shows they have done Hazbin is the best looking one. Out of all the episodes I feel 4 is the best paced and made, it felt most focused out of them. I heard some call Charlie a marry sue becuse she dose´t have any personal flaws that forces her to learn and evolve, I can see thier point but at the same time I would´t call that marry sue. Sure Lucifer not being more flawed and thier relationship being solved felt a bit short even thought I loved that song. Final point, yes Viv dose´t explain much in the show, I get it she mentioned once she dose´t like information dumps or characters explaining things the others should know and even if I don´t like it you are right about it being nice if a newbie character was introduced so that some things could be explained, but that seems to be something Viv dose´t like, the story is about Charlie and the others. Like this thing that is´t explained in the show. When a sinner kills a sinner they will regenerate but it is painful and takes time. And the eyes you see everywhere in hell are the remains of those slain during the extermination, that would be horrefying to find out in the show when we see a extermination or during the final battle. But again prioretize the story then explaining the world. Like if Carmine have been giving sinners angelic weapons would´t they all know that they permanentley kill other sinners with them? So yeah a bit of logic problem. I love the show, I like this style this is the type of shows I want but I like them to be able to work proper on them, wish for more episodes.

One of your questions was answered in the show itself. No, sinners who sell their soul to another are not shielded from extermination. Carmilla called the Overlord meeting in episode 3 to discuss how to protect their assets, including the sinners whose souls they own, with the new semiannual extermination schedule. That meeting got derailed by Velvette, which is why the detail could be missed.

i wholeheartedly agree with this, i'm glad i'm not the only one who thought the show was bad. charlie's motivations, to me, were very clear in the piolet. she was sensitive to people's feelings and believed there was good in everyone. this made her believe in redemption. in the show, she's just kind of there. the main characters motivations for doing what the entire show is about is hollow. the whole thing with vaggie being an angel and charlie forgiving her was sooo rushed. they seriously should've used the song that vaggie sang during the trust exercise episode for this situation, it would've had so much more of an impact.

Things I would do to improve Hazbin Hotel, in order of how simple it would have been to implement (before production began): 1) Mimzie is cut, replace her entrance with Cherri Bomb and carry that into the next episode when they go to clubbing. Cherri doesn't sing, she just blows up the wall bringing the loan shark fight to the hotel. Husk replaces Mimzie in telling Alastor's backstory, with some quips from Nifty, because of course they would know more about him and be willing to share! 2) Stop moving and spinning the camera so much, my partner literally got motion sick during "Happy Day in Hell". It would have saved weeks of animating at least if you had more stagnant backgrounds, something animators figured out DECADES ago! 3) Swap Charlie going to Cannibal Town and Vaggie going to Carmilla. Charlie needs to learn to fight and Vaggie is the one who needs a pep talk, plus the initial job descriptions match their counterparts better: "Persuade Carmilla to tell us about angelic weaknesses" and "go to a town full of cannibals and recruit soldiers to help us fight against the angels". 4) Charlie already knows Vaggie is a fallen angel, she just respected Vaggie's privacy. This is in line with Charlie's characterization and shows she's not an idiot, just has a big heart. Pairs well with 3 because Vaggie would be the one who needs Rosie therapy in this scenario, and Charlie needs to be reminded that her mission is to protect the hotel, not to destroy Adam/the angels for what they've done. 5) Make the angelic war the season 2 issue/cliffhanger, and have season 1 be against the Vee's with a secondary antagonist of the Loan Sharks that keep popping up, either having the sharks formerly own the hotel or want to take it from the "pacifist" Charlie. The Vee's are secondary and are always right there to broadcast every misstep to the whole ring, trying to crumble any support the Hazbin crew has to destroy Alastor. You end up with a lot of similar story beats and end with a turf war between the sharks and the Hazbin crew, allowing the hotel to be rebuilt for season 2 and giving the show a chance to escalate into the angelic war. We fly through half a year in the 8 episodes we got, and the Vee's rarely show themselves as a larger threat than personal. 6) Make the pilot canon like you said, by recreating it as episode one of a 9 episode season. It's this far down the list because it would require re-animating and voicing the entire thing, with changes to align with what the rest of the season is going for, which would be incredibly difficult to get Amazon to greenlight.

I enjoyed watching hazbin hotel both the pilot and the actual show but i agree it's definitely not a perfect show to watch 😅

The Show could've used 12-13 episodes unfortunately that's what Amazon decided to give Vivzie. Not to mention if the 6 months is being compressed, it could've put time skip captions for the whingy part of the audience. and honestly it's good to like a show for what it is, it's good to have questions about how the world works, unfortunately Animation has to often, bent over backwards for the “lore obsessed” because thats all “those people” care about. Viv will probably wrap things up come the next season and she's not gonna make the show go on tirades about the metaphysics at that point.

Tbh the one part of the show I genuinely enjoyed was Rosie’s song. It genuinely felt like a satire of a children’s animated musical while still being enjoyable on its self. The concept of HH is also actually quite fun, it reminds me of shows like Adventure Time and Gravity falls, shows I greatly enjoyed growing up and still do enjoy. But unfortunately, I think it’s where it falls flat imo. It barely ever tackles deep topics, aside from the controversy of episode 4. Also, for a show that’s supposedly based off South Park, it’s really scared to be actually edgy. Obviously just my opinion lol :3

The biggest issue with Hazbin is it's just too much of a story to tell in 8, 30 minute long streteches I think episode 4 was unironically the best episode(here's the thing the show makes it clear what's happening to Angel is a bad thing)

I also think that lgbtqia+ rep is a bit forced especially with the gay characters now listen I’m not homophobic and I love lgbtqia+ rep I myself am part of the community but there’s a big problem with how it’s written. Yeah…… vaggie could’ve been the one that knew the information about how angels are harmed, learned that carmilla. Killed one, then asked her if she told anyone else (probably so Vaggie is the one unsure about having a war with heaven- so she keeps the secret from Charlie until Adam reveals she’s an angel). Then it would make sense if Charlie is angry with her, not just cuz she lied about being an angel, but also that she withheld how to fight them off. Idk, just spitballing here 🤔
