New Angle backs up Grandmaster Vic Moore's statements 50 years ago about the day Bruce Lee challenged him to a Speed Test at the 1967 Long beach Internationals.
For the past 50 years it has been promoted in books and videos that National Karate Champion Vic Moore was unable to block ANY of Bruce Lee's punches. Even the most recent restored footage of Lee's demonstration removes these events altogether.
As referenced in a 1960s article @ 4:21, stating:
"1967 - Vic Moore and Bruce Lee (the famous Bruce Lee) put on a match of speed at the Internationals in California. Vic beat Bruce Lee 4 out of 6 times. (Facts to prove it)"
Grandmaster Moore's audio commentary was recorded years before this footage was shown. He was going off of memory and it's the same story he has told all these years.
1. @ 2:50 and @ 4:35 - He blocked several strikes to the chest. Specifically, a Palm Heel Block being the 1st of 4.
2. @ 4:44 - Bruce Lee being surprised/embarrassed.
3. @ 4:32 - 5:16 The count of 4 strikes Bruce attempts from spectator Point of View.
4. @ 5:10 - Bruce patting him on his right arm admitting how fast Vic Moore was.
5. @ 5:19 - The Stadium Angle (the really clean color footage released a couple years ago), makes an EDIT removing Vic Moore's first 4 blocks. It then cuts to the profile view of Lee doing only two head strikes from 2 feet away. It is this footage that was referenced as proof of Moore not being able to block Lee. Which we see now was never the case.
6. @ 5:25 - Vic Moore telling Lee the speed drill was to block punches to chest, not the head. And them laughing before concluding the demo.

Bruce is a great reference, but demonstration is a demonstration. DK Yoo pulls the same tricks, but when he was tested against trained fighters. His tricks failed him.

Bruce was sneaky here though. He switched from going at Vic's chest to his head without telling him and without say "ready." Obviously he did this because Vic was blocking his strikes.

Fact is, Martial Arts is not for drawing attention to ones self. It is an art that benefits people mentally, physically, develops a respect for others, self control and ultimately for self defense, not to show off. That’s when it becomes a problem.

A lovely story to put a little balance to the [almost] mythical narrative that is always put out there about Bruce, but told most respectfully and I am sure Bruce went away with alot of respect for Vic that day

This is why actual fight experience is essential: Moore didn't try to "outspeed" Bruce, he OUTREAD his movements, something that many martial artists who only rely on conditioning and repetition drills have no way of learning. Also, respect to Mr Moore, who competed back when Karate tournaments were closer to what they should be, instead of the games of tag they are today.

Does anyone actually SEE what is happening during the replay's? I've only been active in MA Training since 1976, but I can see what is going on here. Should I explain, or would all of you like to figure it out for yourselves? IT'S like this: During the replay of each repetition of the strike, regardless whether it was directed / intended to go to the head or the chest, FALLS impressively short of the target. It's that simple. IF you Look (Carefully), You will See. IF you Seek (Ernestly), You will Find. I've see this demo series of videos over the last 50 years and come to several conclusions. The pertinent conclusion here is that the Hype of the event affected Vic more than he expected and more than was necessary. Even with a shuffle / slide step, making up four steps (as stated in the vid) in one movement is somewhat difficult; The fact is (noted by the video evidence), none of Bruces back-fist strikes were intended to "hit" a target - it was just for show, a show of one individuals speed in "Action" mode vs. another individuals speed in the "Reaction" mode. This is an age-old question: Which is faster, Action or Reaction? The main point is that Bruce only comes to within an inch or two, twice. This is when Vic "touched" Bruces hand as it was within the space to "touch and defend." All the rest of the repetitions of Bruces back-fist strikes are concluding their motion outside of TWO (2) FEET away from Vic's head. Vic Moore was a really good champion Karate Fighter, I wonder if James Williams and he fought in the day? Bruce Lee was a natural Martial Artist (just like Vic) who decided to try to make money performing in movies. It is a good story none the less and both were very good Artists.

I caught that one too. Bruce’s strikes are pulled way before even coming close to Vics face. He also was not Four “steps “back unless they are baby steps. His so called 1-inch punch also starts over a hands length away. Push someone and they they fall back. Hit someone properly they should crumble up or collapse. Reaction is always a step behind the attack. It can’t help it because to react is to not do anything until the attack is already half way to the target. Try dropping a dollar bill straight down through someone’s open thumb and point finger, and ask them to grab the dollar before it goes through their fingers. If the bill is straight and flat they always fail to grasp it unless they anticipate the drop, which negates the experiment.

This valid articulation should be full of replies but it doesn't fit the mythology people were wired to believe. There is A LOT of context surrounding this event that happened the night before that shaped Vic's perception, the outcome, and later everyone elses. It wasn't even Vic's idea to go up there. Vic visited our school and my instructor's home many times. Both of them were USKA and my instructor was present at this event. The fly on the wall heard it all.

I saw the same thing. The 'strike' was not a strike! Showmanship is a talent. Bruce Lee had it. MMA today is about as real as it can get. To deliver a power strike requires a different muscle group and body positioning. I remember the boxing media commentary on Cassius Clay 'phantom' knockout punch of Sonny Liston. I saw the punch. Then reviewed the video in slow motion. At the time Clay(Ali) was in his prime. He was super fast. The punch caused Liston's forehead skin to ripple from the punch. The knockout occurred because Liston's brain bounced very fast within his skull, a newtonian force=mass times acceleration situation. As Ali aged, speed decreased, hence fewer knockouts. But, as we know today, boxing is not the same as 'fighting'. Your analysis is dead on.

This is the question? Was Bruce's speed punching powerful enough to knock out his opponent? I don't think so. Well obviously it would depend on who his opponent is. But in general I don't think compared to today's MMA fighters that Bruce would rank under the first 5.

The times I’ve seen this demonstration, it only shows the last part where Bruce Lee sneaks in the head shot. It looks like Moore is being embarrassed by Lee. Thanks for showing us the rest of it to see who was actually embarrassed.

The problem with Bruce Lee's punching demonstrations is that the other person's hands are down to their sides and are expected to bring up their hands in time to block Bruce Lee's punches which is almost impossible even if the person throwing the punches is much slower than Bruce. Plus nobody fights that way. What would have been real is that the person is already in a fighting stance and moving as in a fight and Bruce Lee trying to touch that person's chest or head before that person can block it or move out of the punch's way. This would have been refective of real fights and how fast Bruce really was.

Exactly. You can see @ 2:48 and 4:31 Vic Moore starts to get in a fighting stance and Bruce instructs him to stand back and not to move.

Wow this is amazing. I don't think I can find all this cool stuff on TV. So Bruce, hands down is lightning fast, but Vic Moore grew up reading body language. Unbelievable, he was just as fast. That surely must have earned some respect from Bruce himself. At the same time it doesn't lessen my thoughts on Bruce Lee. Vic narrating the whole video makes it even better. No bias, no padding, no whatever. Just whatever happened on that day.

Bruce lee was the reason i got into martial arts, He was amazing at his art form but i will never ever say he was unbeatable. That is the reality, he was human. Bruce was and still is the biggest inspiration to most martial artists around the world and i can comfortably accept he was one of the best, but i can never say he was the best. Very very impressive! I've never seen this footage before, but proof that Sifu Bruce Lee was a man, not perfect, not a God. Maybe the best in his time with physical feats, legendary and unbeatable to this day and changing the concept of martial arts, how it was know. Finally, add and recognize the extraordinary and also mythical, the performance of sensei Vic Moore.

Just for context, most of these demonstrations were done at karate tournaments. The punch was clearly short of his face, but that was very typical of moves that would have received a point in those karate tournaments. He was not trying to discredit Moore or any of the top competitors, but he was expressing contempt for karate tournaments and how far removed they were from actual combat.

Now THAT is a fantastic story. I love the background too. Sad but sometimes the horrible things in our lives give us superpowers. You get beaten by your father but come high school no opponent can scare you. I’m not rooting for evil people or saying that’s good. Hearing Master Vic’s story on how he learned to read and anticipate people’s movements I absolutely believe it. Staying quiet n calm n just watching n feeling. I believe Floyd Mayweather developed this anticipation as well, watching his dad, uncle n other fighters growing up. So much has not been learned in the world of fighting.

According to Bruce Lee himself, Bruce Lee did not train Martial Arts since a little kid. He acted at a young age. And took up martial arts for a couple of years in his late teens before going to America.

Any honest person can see the last quick punch was way short. Bruce did this to make it look like he was unblocked. It was at the head, and it was not close enough to land, it was 12 inches away.

I forgot I knew this story by Vic, and I was expecting that hyped up Bruce Lee kind of story, where Bruce would get slightly airborne with a bit of a raised knee to fake a kick, and then perfectly tag with a punch. Then as I watched it I thought he'd recognize what Vic was doing, and telegraph the opposite way. It's always good to get a whole bunch of perspectives, anyway, to realize the man was human too. Also when I've seen this in the past it was always the last two strikes, as others have said, and also told with the story that Bruce Lee was grabbing something out of Vic's open hand. I am glad Master Vic Moore is getting his due respect. And the truth is finally coming out. But Why did it take over 50 years. And many known people came out and ridiculed then Mr Vic. MOORE. Bruce Lee studied philosophy in college. He wrote books based on his studies and growing insights. But don't fool yourself. He was not the baddest man on earth. There is always so much to learn be humble and great and grow.

It did not take over 50 years. This was the story since the day it happened. Lee's promoters edited the video to control the narrative that Lee was better than these worldwide champions. Moore's interview is pretty clear on these events. He was interviewed for a book by Black Belt Magazine in 1993 so this info is credible not just by Moore who IT HAPPENED TO but others who were there as well.

The media in this case being those who produced and edited the Bruce Lee documentaries. Even after the footage was found of Moore and his interviews, they never interviewed him or people like him who influenced Lee and trained with him. Only his movie acting counterparts. Inosanto and Kimura interviews over the decades seemed honest and interesting but always edited to support the same narrative like you say.

I am not meaning to sound rude by this statement but people of my age were raised with 3 local television stations and 2 local newspapers. If we wanted to follow a sport we had to subscribe to a magazine and only get what information they had to print each month. It wasn't suppression, but lack of 300 television stations and unlimited access to the internet that kept this information "hidden " from us.

Amazing ! My first time hearing this from Moore's perspective. I'm 62 and we knew back then that Vic was the one man that could beat Bruce Lee in a one on one . Seeing this with him narrating exactly what's going on in the clips is hearing Mike Tyson talk about fighters faults and of how he takes advantage of them. Moore talking about eye and other movements and of HOW he learned them is LEGENDARY !!

Bruce Lee made martial arts famous all over the world, he was a human being and therefore it is logical that someone could knock him out, he said, "if you believe 10% of what you see in my movies , you believe in fairy tales" , he is the myth of the Martial Arts even if I don't think he was invincible he was an excellent athlete and a good actor of action movies, so where is the problem?

Don't let it get you down. Bruce Lee wasn't a God, he was a man. He had his share of wins and losses. I think most people look at a guy like Bruce Lee and make the mistake of assuming he can do no wrong which of course is nonsense. And make no mistake while I tell you all this I thought the same until I saw this video way back when.

I never had 1 pro fight. I am a fighter. In what generation did we start saying trained fighters who have fought in the streets can't fight because they were not pro. UFC guys would not go to Prison and be toughest guy in there. Wake up. They would never walk the inner cities and be the most lethal or experienced fighters out there. This is a fact. Bruce trained with all these guys cause he was average? no obviously not.

Bruce Lee said that competitions were like "swimming on land". He was training for real life situations, and he said his film moves were more flashy than how he would fight for real. It just does not matter than he never fought in competitions!

Bruce Lee was nowhere near the standard of the best world class fighters.Yes he had speed but that doesn’t make you a world class fighter one has to be much more.Why people think Bruce Lee was better than these world class fighters who are doing this week in week out year after year doesn’t even make logical sense.A big difference fighting world class level, some street tough who has a few good moves and is strong.Those kinds of street tough guys aren’t beating no world class proven fighter not with a few good moves and being strong.Maybe because Bruce Lee died young and unexpectedly has made him into this also mythical figure over the years.Could Bruce Lee fight probably fairly well, but could he fight consistently at world class level and actually win consistently I very much doubt that.The real fighters fight the ones who cannot do so as well teach. First before I make my comment, much respect GM Vic Moore, you are a true martial arts. When he backhanded towards your face, it was a mile away, lol you don't even have to block it, there is no danger. You block all his punches at chest level and prove to be quicker than Bruce.

I took Karate when I was about 11(back in ‘95, fuck, I got old!). I always remember Sensei Alan’s words, “Always look your opponent dead in the eye, the eyes are more deceiving than throwing feints or fake shots. Your opponent will tell what he’s doing through his eyes, not his fists or feetwork.” True lesson that! Thanks Alan.

In San Diego, I think I remember Vic getting dissed by a referee, when fighting against Joe Lewis. Then Joe got verbal.. and Vic picked up a folding chair and whacked Mr. Lewis. Hahahaha. Nice memories Mr Moore. I also remember fighting a young Puerto Rican who had a bizarre style..like mine. i was going into the finals and he was between me, and Mr Norris. He [surprisingly] kicked my tail. I was stunned but it happened. His name was Louis Delgado. Nice fellow outside the ring. Not sure whatever happened to him.

Wow! I must admit, Master Victor Moore definitely got skills from what I have observed here. For anyone to block 4 out of 6 punches from Master Bruce Lee is an accomplishment. However, I feel that both men are extremely great at what they do. I give credit to both Masters. What an incredible display here... and this is coming from a diehard Bruce Lee fan. Important to note that Vic Moore says repeatedly that Bruce's strikes were indeed "lightning fast". A champion calling a strike lightning fast repeatedly, and without any sarcasm, implies his technique and physicality were superb. The flaw was his eye movements etc. just before the strike that telegraphed his intention. That's an instinct you simply can't improve without a whole lot of actual fighting experience, which Bruce Lee never had on the level of champions because he wasn't a competitor. And we can never know what talent Bruce Lee had for such things because that's not the path he chose. There's no doubt that his technique and physicality were well worth the praise, and his theory was revolutionary. But yeah, he was no competitor.

That's really the thing a lot of people either don't know, or understand, but once experienced, you either are ok with getting punched in the face by a puncher as skilled as you are, or your not. (full contact) most people will never get to know. Those who get to know, have to decide if they want that part of it. Why the hell would you? And the others fight, because why the hell wouldn't you want to? It's a beautiful dance of violence in control, and nothing more, until the opposition wants to truly hurt you before you can do the same to him.

ARKENSETH: I've learned several things just from this including that technology is taking away our time to learn to use our natural senses to do things like reading a person in the way Vic did that's how he was able to block Bruce in the 1st place. Bruce was great, but Vic had the knowledge to predict a person's movement which helped him in competition's.

This was not the first time someone block Bruce Lee's punch. In the book STRIKING DISTANCE by Charles Russo, Bruce Lee challenged anyone from the audience to block his punch. Someone from one of the Kung fu schools took up the challenge and blocked Bruce Lee's punch. Since this demonstration was going awry, Bruce Lee said if anyone wanted to know more about Wing Chun, contact his school. This led to the famous Bruce Lee, Wong Jack Man fight of 1965.
