Hey Scott, as an illustrator myself I just wanted to say thank you so much for posting this kind of content literally for free. Having a legend like yourself explain their method and demonstrate it live is SO incredibly valuable, I really can't stress enough how useful this is. Thank you for all you do, much love.

Scott is more than just a drawing instructor, he has worked on design for some serious companies. He's akin to having Syd Mead talk you through his thought process. I'd love to see a movie made with Scott's design's (art) used as the concept art.
@drawitout
@drawitout 3 года назад
@@johnoswald9143 Yes. I know his background. He is a drawing instructor. He is not *just* a drawing instructor, but he is a drawing instructor. When I tell my dad he’s the best dad ever, nobody corrects me to say that he’s not just a dad but also an amazing carpenter, amateur astronomer, forager, and dog-walker. They understand I’m just appreciating this one, very important aspect of him.
@johnoswald9143

@@drawitout I know he’s a drawing instructor, I seen his drawing DVD’s. I was merely imparting knowledge, it wasn’t a correction, it was a confirmation. To have a professional at Scott’s level share his knowledge for free is rather special and generous. Am glad you like your Dad so much, mine was the best too.

This is great, thanks Scott! I was wondering if you could talk about flow/ gesture in your design process? I see gesture a lot in Syd Meads work but can't find a lot of info regarding his thinking on it. Any thoughts would be great.

Hi Scott. Which way do you think its better to learn perspective as begginer? Studying simple objects perspective through measurement methods or trying to get as accurate as posible intuitively. By the way, your videos are informative and amazing.
@scottrobertsondesign
@scottrobertsondesign 3 года назад
It's probably not an either or situation. When learning anything new I feel it's important to try as many "ways" of learning as well. We are all wired a little differently and what works for some may not work for others. Work from observation, try the technical constructions etc. each technique with inform the other and your knowledge will be much broader as a result.

P S D ... interesting . I've noticed you like to draw robots and mech that look like animals and sea creatures and you avoid making them look humanoid is there a reason for that or it's just because the human form is limiting and it can't be pushed for this sort of artwork ?
@scottrobertsondesign
@scottrobertsondesign 3 года назад
Probably the last part, I find the range of shapes inspired by animals to be more interesting. Also I usually like to add a rider/pilot to the mech for scale and this looks a bit odd to me on a humanoid mech unless you go really large with it ala Gundam style.

@scottrobertsondesign
@scottrobertsondesign 3 года назад
Depending on the size you will use different parts of your arm. Shoulder-large, wrist/fingers-small. Circles are wicked difficult by the way. There was only one student in all of my classes at Art Center that could draw them perfectly by hand and it wasn't me. Takes lots of practice, stick with it.
