Kristen and I are pretty seasoned in the ways of job-quitting. In my first three years of working post-college, I had three jobs and quit them all. And Kristen quit her very first job after 5 weeks (though they deserved it for having a series of meetings about whether or not to start a LinkedIn page for the company. I mean, come on now).
Maybe it’s our mutual rebellious attitudes, but we’ve both been pretty YOLO about quitting (which has likely done nothing to help correct the notion that Millennials are entitled and disloyal, but that’s a matter for a different day). The way we see it, if you don’t advocate for yourself then you can’t expect anyone else to step up to the plate.
But not all of you are so c’est la vie about quitting. In fact, most people we coach have a lot of hang-ups about it, like:
• I don’t want to disappoint my co-workers.
• I can’t leave if I’m in the middle of something.
• People will think I’m disloyal.
• What if they just can’t operate without me?
• What if they can’t find someone else to do my job?
• I haven’t been here long enough to leave.
So, in this week’s brand-new blog I’m giving my best counterarguments against these common job-quitting hang-ups, all to convince you that you truly don’t need to feel guilty about leaving.

If the tables were turned and getting rid of you helped their bottom line they would do it in a heart beat. Your employer is not your friend. Your relationship is transactional. You owe your employer nothing other then the hours you work and the job they ask you to perform that's it. I recently quit a job after two weeks, I already knew by the third day that it wasn't going to workout. The job wasn't what I thought it would be, The work was not only very soul crushing and boring, it was incredibly stressful. I just told them it wasn't a good fit. Naturally they were disappointed. But again, if the tables were turned and they came to the realization that I wasn't a good fit for them, they would not hesitate for a second to get rid of me. So why should I be any different? Companies have no problem firing or laying off even seasoned loyal employees and they don't give two weeks notice. They just tell you they are done with you and to clear out your desk. Don't feel like you owe a company anything. Because given the first chance they get, they will throw you under the bus to save their bottom line. Like I said, they are NOT your friend.

I gave my nursing job the middle finger during the pandemic. Seeee ya. I work on call now. I only work 2-3 days a week if that. I’m done. It drained me spiritually, physically, emotionally.

I just submitted my three weeks notice for an amazing opportunity and I thought I was going to feel relief but instead I feel incredibly guilty due to all the reasons you mentioned and helped iron out for us. The feeling of guilt overcame me that I even had to step out and breathe. Thank you so much.

all those reasons went thru my head... and I put in my notice anyway.... Because in the end it's about me and since they cannot be flexible (I just asked for a schedule change after 15 years in the same one).... now I am going to work when I want to!!

What’s crazy is I’m a contract worker and I always do a good job wherever I’m at and I create great relationships. I’m not getting any traditional benefits and had a fight for sick time but I still feel guilty leaving for the direct client. At the end of the day I have to do what’s best for me because I am replaceable as everyone is.

I spent 11.5 years at my previous job. My older brother was my boss. I always felt obligated to go above and beyond when I did my work. But I started burning out towards the end. I did feel guilty when I gave my two weeks notice. But I had to be reminded that I didn’t owe anyone anything. I knew that I was the best employee, and I’m sure finding my replacement will be hard, but it’s my boss’s job to do that.

And in quitting you're creating a job that someone else might be a lot happier to have! A win-win for everyone, even if not everyone else can see it that way yet.

It’s satisfying when you hear that they had to hire 2-3 people to replace you and things are still running rough. While you were there you did the quality of work that reflects who you are but you were taken advantage of. They never offered to compensate properly or were considerate to your needs. In my life I have witnessed that those who blessed me have consequently been blessed by God and those who have cursed and maltreated me have been cursed. Either their business is barely scraping by or they’re bankrupt. I never wished them ill, I just tried to do my job well and fulfill all my obligations. I think it’s going to 3-4 people to replace me this time and the students are going to learn much slower and master less material.

The following Monday and Tuesday after I quit my toxic job I was getting phone calls from other employees asking me stuff. I gave it two weeks notice and I trained these people as much as I could. But I knew if I stayed there I was going to end up on a slab. The working environment was just so toxic and certain people I just couldn't work with any longer. But hearing the people I trained calling me for help really brings on the guilt trip and makes me feel like I abandoned everybody that I couldn't hack it.... I'm a quitter and a loser and I ran away..... it's only a job and I know when I start my new one it won't be so bad anymore.

Guilt is a natural side effect of being a human with empathy! It's normal for anyone to feel bad in your situation. AND ... stay focused on the fact that you staying in an environment that's harmful to you isn't creating a win for anyone else.

I work for my bf and with him. My life has been the most miserable and unhappy. I don't want to work there anymore or even be with him anymore. He's rude and always bitching. I don't even care about a 2 weeks notice. I want out asap. I'm living day by day. I'm wanting to quit every day and run away from him too. Today needs to be the day...

We're so sorry to hear that! You're totally right to get out of both this job AND this relationship. It sounds pretty unhealthy, and you deserve better!

Would you really tell an interviewer that you left for your health? Seems to me that could be a red flag for a new employer. Left a toxic environment and took some time off... how to explain this to the next prospective employer.
@clarityonfire
@clarityonfire 3 года назад
Yep, we would 100% be honest about that. If a future employer can't be understanding of that, it says a LOT about their own culture. We'd be direct about saying, "I took time off because my last work environment was very toxic and had a direct impact on my physical/mental health. I'm committed to making sure my next employer is a healthy place to work. So, what can you tell me about the work culture here?"
