Along with Ann Wilson, Deborah Harry had one of the best female voices in rock. No auto tune, no back up singers, just standing there and effortlessly knocking it out of the park.
This song shows Clem's brilliance; Deborah had a quaint habit of singing out of the side of her mouth at times, def. not pitch perfect, but an outstanding standup entertainer
@@darrenwitzaney8549 Debbie's occasional corner of the mouth vocalizations were appealing to me. It reinforced her slight badgirl image which I adored.
Debbie never had the range that Ann Wilson did in her younger days. Ann was in a choir and also studied opera in her youth. I don't believe Debbie had that experience or any voice training, but that being said I love Debbie's unpretentious singing and stage presence.
EXACTLY BUT watch show where Chris was not present.... Would not believe how important to the sound...They all fit together to deliver.....All important
Well, that is the basic arrangement in this song along with the bass. Don't overlook how the walking bass fills work with the vocal part. The intro features the guitars very well.
How right you are!! Clem Burke ( the drummer ) in my humble opinion has never received rating as a great drummer that he well deserves. For years, when I spoke about great rock and roll drummers, he is among the best.
I come back to this performance on RU-vid when I'm down, when I feel hopeless. And suddenly I'm reminded that new beginnings and the inspiration to dust yourself off is right in front of you.
Clem Burke is a legend in every sense of the word. Probably the worlds best drummer of the 1980s, and played with many of the chart toppers of that era. Whilst nobody can ever fill Led Zeps phenomenal drummer John Bonhams shoes, I’d put Clem right up there to tie his shoe laces if not try them on for size.
I was just a fan 13, would be motorbike, Kawasaki fanatic, Courier, Paul Weller he was the Man, as Mod as I could be. Saw Blondie 2 or 3 times at the Apollo Glasgow.
And here I just thought they were of a studio band. Her voice is perfect. No auto tune needed. Drummer is frixking amazing. I have no idea how ended here but so glad I did
They came out of the NY punk/new wave scene. They used to play at CBGBs all the time with The Ramones, Talking Heads, Patti Smith, New York Dolls, etc. In the mid 1970s before they hit it big.
I wonder if I said "Debbie Harry, MARRY ME!!!", if she might see this and say "YES!!" I have had this maddest CRUSH on Debbie since the late 70's....yes, I was about 18-19 then, and still, I yearn for her. A TRUE rock GODDESS!! XXXX
Haven't heard this in ages, forgot what a great song it is. Also forgot that they were actually a pretty kick-ass band that could really cut it live. Deborah Harry is so damned beautiful that her excellent voice gets overlooked...but dear God, that BEAUTY! The shot at 33 seconds in makes me weak in the knees!! One of the most beautiful women EVER.
Õh Debbie was just Flawless, but no overlooking her vocal capacity, Blondie were the coolest band around with great music, & she still looks good now at 76
The BEST live version of this song I've heard yet. Clem Burke is fuckin' AWESOME on drums. Overrated indeed. Debbie Harry --- beautiful AND talented. They ROCKED! DAMN, I miss this music.
I think the entire band was underrated, due to one thing; Debbie's looks. Arguably, she is the best looking female lead singer of all time. I believe that overshadowed her, and the rest of the band's, amazing talent.
That's a good point. She was actually hindered by her telegenic looks. Nobody could take here so seriously as a musician, because they had already pigeon-holed her as just a pretty-face.
I understand what you mean here, but I have to disagree. I don’t think they are underrated. They were massive with youth culture in the early 80s and have influenced countless musicians and artists in the subsequent generations. I think they get the credit they deserve as a band. In fact, I once heard VH1 make the absolutely ludicrous claim that blondie helped pioneer rap with “Rapture”.
Best looking female lead singer of all time was Suzanna Hoffs of The Bangles (and she was no slouch vocally.) Also can't forget Stevie Nicks, the Wilson sisters from Heart, Cher & Linda Ronstadt. Later on you had Madonna, Beyonce, Britney Spears, Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera, Shania Twain, Nicole Scherzinger, Katy Perry, Avril Lavigne, Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift and many, many other beautiful and talented female singers.
@@EricaEchos, these things are of course subjective. Some of those women you list were / are very attractive I agree, Shania especially - and I can name some more - but Deborah Harry was already 32 years old when Blondie became known. I was amazed by her stunning beauty and she was by then old enough to be my mother. She was still stunning aged 54 last time I saw Blondie.
lineup didnt last, but aside from Ringo’s all star stuff, sometimes talented pairings dont last or pan out. Presley was my cousin, glad Clem took the name albeit briefly.
I remember watching the concert (edited ?) as a 12 year old on The Old Grey Whistle Test on New Years Eve 1979 at my uncle's house. My aunt, uncle & parents hated it and I think it was the first programme I had seen in colour (we only had a black & white set in those days. Debbie's performance only cemented my belief that she was the the ultimate goddess. Even 44 years on, Dreaming still sounds as good as it did the day it was pressed onto Eat To The Beat, and No 3 in my favourite Blondie tracks, only being beaten by Union City Blue with 11:59 being the so underrated No 1.
Oh yeah played it for my 19 yr old super picky musically daughter and BOOM she fell in love with it top of her Playlist papi did good lol. Sge said she loved the duet between Clem and Blondie n rest of band fills in lol so cool!!!
Just in awe of how strong and distinctive a voice she had back then singing live - in a different league to many modern artists that need help to sound good. Not in any way lesser than the recorded vesion either, just slightly different, a little slower and very melodic. Even with the dubious quality of the sound recording it is amazing to hear, as is the poweful drumming by Clem. Would have loved to be at this gig, but I was only 15.
She's so far forward in the mix, this is almost an isolated vocals track. She does a great job here. She's underrated both as a vocalist and a writer - this is co-written between her and Chris Stein.
After the release of Denis Denis I was hooked but Dreaming blew me away. Love the way it cranks up with the best iconic female lead singer on vocals supported by great musicians, then you have Clem in his pomp. WHAT A TUNE.
It'2022, I'm 56 and thought about this a lot and this is defo one of my top ten ultimate fav songs. It's true dreaming is still free for now, enjoy it while you can
I was a teenager during Blondie's heyday and they were huge. On every station every ten minutes and it seemed like every song that came out was better than the next. They had so many hits but were so concentrated that it seemed like such a short time that they were it. They put out like 10 years worth of songs in 3 years. Debbie deserves way more notoriety than she gets. They are still great now especially compared to what is coming out these days. It's all been done before.
I agree! Dreaming is definitely one of my favorite Blondie songs, and I am a HUGE Blondie fan. I love how they sound live: amazing! Thanks rlv70 for posting.
Wow.....33 years, hey. I was like..19 almost 20. I can only hope I'm still here in another 33 years, I know this will still be at the top of my play list. Thank you Debbie. XXXXX
You really need to see a band performing live to get a sense of how good they are. This performance is brilliant, and I say that as someone too young to have seen them back then. Debbie's voice is pitch perfect. And Clem Burke obviously stands out.
agree with the many deserving platitudes, their best song by far. Clem's been my biggest inspiration for learning the drums, but God he is in a total league of his own! awesome!
