Would you keep your patients on bp meds if their lifestyle changed like eating clean and lost over 80lbs.. pressure. My pressure is below 120/80 it never gets that high it’s normal all the time. The meds makes it drop low then i get lightheaded. I walk 15 miles a day. I think i need to come off meds because it stay a lil low.it’s normal always. My practitioner. Don’t want to stop the meds but it lower it when i take it. Because its pretty low already. Like 93/63 82/52 101/60.. when i take the meds im lightheaded or very tired or miserable. It use to be high but it never over 120/ 80. These are the reading i normally gets. My practitioner is pretty young i feel like she don’t really know a lot.

My experience with Losartan was shocking. Suddenly, I couldn't understand what I was reading, and my numeracy took a nose dive. I'd read a paragraph in a novel and think "I have no idea what I just read." Stopped it after a few weeks and improved. Just adding this to the conversation. "Other medications are available."

Had an outpatient surgery recently. After the anaesthetic wore off, they gave me a cup of coffee to help me come back to life. Then, ten minutes later, before discharging me, they took my BP, which was an astronomic 180 (systolic, of course). When I took it three hours later at home it was 135. Goes to show how variable the measurement is and how subject to external influences.

Great presentation! From my experience the measuring of blood pressure at doctors offices are not done correctly. When I took my mother to her doctor's office, she would be nervous about her weight and other things, and the first thing the nurse would do is stand her on the scale and take her blood pressure. After doing the normal procedures I asked the nurse to let my mother sit for a few moments and breathe slowly and take her blood pressure again. It was significantly lower. Definitely, the procedures should be changed at doctors offices. The very highest and best to all.

Having been a vascular ultrasound tech. I would strongly advise taking blood pressure from both arms at least when you first start seeing a patient. A patient may have arterial occlusion in one arm which will give a false lower number. Good point on the size of the cuff bigger the arm wider the cuff.

Increasing your potassium intake while reducing sodium is VERY effective in combination with weight loss, and exercise. I'm 72 years old, 6'0" and weighed 211 lbs. with a BP around 140-145 / 80-85. I dropped 31 lbs. with intermittent fasting over 5 months and have kept it off for about 7 months staying at 179-180 lbs. My BP is now around 115-120 / 60-65 with a home measurement.

Changing to a macrobiotic/vegan/raw vegan/fruitarian diet, I have reduced my blood pressure to normal range of 120/80. No more than 1000mg of sodium daily. I’m an 59 and take no medications. My parents took high blood pressure medications for 40 years. They ate the Standard American Diet and were not overweight. My father smoked 1 cigarette a day after dinner. My mother did not smoke. I was a caregiver to them until their deaths. I decided to CHANGE my diet rather than face decades of medication.
@sportysbusiness
@sportysbusiness 4 года назад
I tried the diet you're on for 2 years and ended up with brain fog, no energy, high blood pressure and dental issues. I changed to a wild meat low carb, high fat carnivore diet, eliminated my gum disease and reduced my blood pressure from 170/95 to 115/75. I eat plenty of salt and I feel amazing. Sharp mental focus, plenty of energy, I'm never hungry so only eat 1 or 2 meals a day and I find it really easy to stay lean. We're all different.
@rozchristopherson648
@rozchristopherson648 4 года назад
Sportys Business I was a caregiver to parents and a grandmother for 20 years. Both my parents and my grandparents on both sides suffered from high blood pressure. All of them died from some form of heart disease (strokes, heart attacks, valve replacement). One grandfather passed from emphysema. All, except one grandfather and one great-grandfather who died in their 50s, took high blood pressure medications from about age 40. None of them were overweight. My father smoked one cigarette a day after dinner. They lived to ages 78-92, debilitated by heart disease and medications. They all had one thing in common. The Standard American Diet. Animal products at every meal. Eventually, eating animal products will catch up with you. I’m 59 and stopped 5 years ago consuming animal flesh. Then gave up dairy. You sound like you are younger than I am. You may “feel” better now. But if you continue to consume animal products, which have a cumulative effect, you will eventually have some illnesses that are the direct or indirect result of consuming animal products. You will inevitable end up taking prescriptions for these illnesses and maybe even need bypass surgery, etc. Trust me, it’s not worth it. By the time you see the full effects of consuming animal products, it will be too late for dietary changes to have much of an impact. There are ways to eat a vegan diet and still be healthy, have energy, etc. Think of the long term consequences of a carnivore diet. It won’t be good for you as time goes on.

My BP is less than 120/80 however, I barely eat processed foods n active still at d age of 70 . Spiritual connection with God helps a lot with attaining inner peace because I tend to be less materialistic n happy with what I just have.

Dr Baron, Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge, time and experience as a Dr. I have High Blood Pressure since leaving the Marine Corps in 1994. Naturally I understand why. Drop in physical fitness, food intake, wrong diet led to High Blood Pressure. Since then I’ve been diagnosed with DM along with many other disabilities due to my service in the Marine Corps. Which was over 21 years. I’ve now been doing the things that I think is helping me. Losing weight, eating right, no fast foods, the right carbohydrates, sodium, protein, fiber and reduced sugar levels. Over the past two years I’ve lost 20 pounds to my current weight of 176-177. But I’m still concerned. But thanks for letting us know what to do.

My home monitor records within + - 5% of the office readings. My 'at home' average over 6 readings a day (3 in the am and 3 in the pm) for 2 weeks is 128/68. My 'in office' BP is ALWAYS (for the past 40 years) VERY high . Most recently, in the cardio clinic at the hospital, it was 180/120. It has been higher than that. I have learned to not concern myself with 'in office' readings.

I've had high blood pressure and very high potassium for a few years now, I have to soak my vegetables for hours before boiling them in tons of water, this leaches out the potassium, I have to avoid veggies I really like such as avocado, beetroot etc and I can never eat beans, dates, dried fruits etc because of the very high potassium. I came across this video and got hooked on this presentation and then bang, right at the end Dr Baron mentions the connection between ACE inhibitors and high potassium. This is truly remarkable, the connection has never been made by different doctors I've seen over the years. Of course this does not necessarily mean my BP drugs are the cause of my high potassium but it's certainly a high possibility, one which I will look into. Perhaps I'll ask to swap my BP drugs for another one and see if my potassium goes down. Very interesting presentation and thank you Dr Baron.

I'm CKD too and potassium is way too high, however I've repeatedly refused to take the B/P meds my Dr. prescribed. I still have too high potassium because my kidneys are damaged & not able to flush out excess potassium. It's kidney damage that causes high potassium & phosphates, not the meds for high b/p. I wish it was that simple. Yes, I've given up my favorite Avocados & lots of other foods I love.

My doc advised me to take BP meds because my BP was staying around 160-170 / 80-90. I did some reading and learned High BP is among the first signs of a "MAGNESIUM DEFICIENCY"! I started taking 500 mg's of Magnesium oxide in tablet form. Letting the tablet dissolve in saliva without swallowing it, crushing the crystals with teeth, massaging the crystals against the roof of the mouth etc., over a period of 15 minutes or so while watching TV lowered my blood pressure into the 115-120 / 70-85 range depending on the activity situation. Natural remedies exist for every situation! Most are aggressively hidden by the "PHARMA/MED", cartels to protect profit!! I'm 72, survived 2 strokes caused by following Doc's advice & swallowing toxic meds as well as curing at home, a hospital acquired "INCURABLE", Staph infection with garlic, turmeric and oregano. That was in 2009, 12 years ago.

@@benjaminjr6322 It depends say for example if some has tennis elbow that will be inflammation of the elbow joint there will be a bottle neck because of the injury and the blood pressure will ride due to the heart beating faster ,the brain receives the signal that there is an injury on the elbow and that triggers the heart to pump blood as a result high blood pressure registers on the pressure gauge that's how our bodies react, that's with most injuries, so in this case cooling the area of injuries a cold compression is recommended eg ice pack ,use of fenbid jell antiinflamatory medicine is used a strong pain killer and a tubular dressing should ease the pain ,bone injuries can be fatal, bone rubbing on bone is just as fatal xrays or MRI results will show clear signs of the injuries all this will show on the blood pressure monitor. Injuries to the knees also rises the blood pressure and that will trigger the heart to pump blood faster to the area .Blood thining medication like aspirin or ibuprofen is used that will make the blood flow better as blood has red cells and white cells, when the area is injured there appears to be traffic jam of cells that's when pain increases, sometimes surgery is indicated.

I am astonished at the fact that some doctors are not aware of this knowledge. My mom is over seventy years old and her doctor insists that her b/p should be 120/80. He wants to add more meds to the four meds that she takes to lower her b/p. She has CHF and kidney problems, so why does he wants her b/p to be the same as it was when she was in her twenties? I can not believe what he is thinking, but I will not allow it. It seems like common sense should kick in at some point. Thank you, doctor for your help.

Great video! As an engineer, I take issue with the present measurement of blood-pressure anyway. It is well known in hydraulics that if the flow in a circulation (pump-driven) pipe system is restricted in any way - the pressure goes up. This effect can be readily seen if one restricts a running garden-hose for example by pinching the pipe - the pressure rises and the water jet goes further. The human circulation system works in a very similar way. If the flow is restricted (by squeezing under the wrap-around cuff for example) - the pressure in the flow goes up! Come on guys - it's just like the old accepted practice of putting grease on burns! A high blood-pressure measured in this way merely demonstrates how good the pump (your heart) is - not how bad your system is!
@RepentfollowJesus

Everyone is different and has a different BP and not necessarily 120/80 as some believe is a norm. Also, medical personnel should be taught not to react to BP measurements as a patient is about to die! This creates anxiety in patients and will produce incorrect results the next time BP is checked.
@Emmsays

Dee: I fully agree with what you say. His lecture was great. It is ridiculous and unhealthy to try to keep everyone at such low numbers. I never listen to doctors when they are spouting nonsense or urging me to take a lot of medications that make me feel ill and that have questionable results. For example, I thought hormone replaement therapy was dangerous and I was proven right about that. I feel statins are dangerous, and I have been proven correct about that. Trying to reduce blood pressure to extremely low levels in an older person through many medications is also counterintuitive. I know that drug companies want to make more money by making more people dependent on drugs they don't really need. People have to engage in critical thinking and not blimdly follow what someone tells them to do. This video gives us information to help us do that.

Along with all the other problems associated with that, including hypertension. Those two videos are on the UCLA channel and really worth watching. But my point here is that these people calling Baron a shill are mistaken, because it's impossible he doesn't know about Lustig's work (given he's had Lustig in as a guest lecturer for his classes). And therefore, it's a good bet he understands the metabolic processes that drive insulin / leptin resistance, and therefore maybe he has something meaningful to say about hypertension here. Then I started taking Magnesium 250 mg twice in week. Now my pressure is reduced to 140/90. Still high. Then as per my friend's advice I had started doing ANULOM VILOM pranayam. It's very easy. At first I did for two minutes per day, then slowly increased to five minutes per day. Now my BP is 120-130/75-85. It's under control considering I am 55 +. ANULOM VILOM is very easy to do and there are atleast a dozen utube videos avaliable on line. Anyone can do it. It's free of cost. I am not asking you to stop your medicine. Recommended of how to take the BP is a crock. If it is low at home shows you are relaxed in a relaxed environment. BP is all about the body's reaction to environmental stresses or lack of. If it is all over the place but at home, you're still low, don't worry about it. You're body is doing what is supposed to do. If it is high: -Stop eating all processed foods. Restaurant food is right up there. -Check your diet and fat intake such as high omega 6 oils. -Evaluate refined sugar/HFCS intake -Stress levels at work and home -Quality of sleep -Amount of exercise both resistance and cardio -natural blood thinners of water, vitamin C -removal of table salt from the diet and use Himalayan, Sea or Celtic salts. Sodium/potassium are vital for nerve and muscle function. Sound health to everyone. If you've gone beyond 10 minutes in this video you're interested in your health and already doing some of the things I listed and of course, I only highlight a few of the many things needed.

The most relevant blood pressure numbers are those recorded during real life situations, not sitting calmly in the ideal position with no one talking or distracting. I would call that a 'false low' measurement.
@mariespi96
@mariespi96 2 года назад
I'm not a medical professional but I think they shouldn't determine to give people meds based on measurements that were taken when they were stressed. It's best to take it when they are least stressed or on their normal routine at home so they know what their baseline is.

Yes agree but it's impossible to standardise upset, angry, distressed situations across populations whereas everyone can sit quietly in a room to have their BP taken. Your point is well-made though.

I was diagnosed with hypertension in 2007. I survived two strikes: one in 2012 and recently in 2020. I know I'm blessed to still be alive but I still struggle with my blood pressure going up and down when measured by my doctor. I still don't fully understand that but oh well. The crazy thing is that I take two blood pressure meds and a med to stop blood clots. I don't know how helpful those blood pressure meds work because I kept my BP low the first three and half years and all of sudden, Boom. My body had adapted to the two BP meds. It stayed high for eight years until I had this recent stroke possibly due to a blood clot. Although my BP is still higher than what the doctor wants it to be, they said I should feel better due to my blood levels staying at a much safer level..

Great info! Thank you! Doctor tried to subscribe BP medication during an initial without really knowing me as a patient. I had to rush to get to his office after a stressful day. To top it off, I was nervous about meeting a doctor for the first time. Naturally my blood pressure was elevated when the nurse took my vitals. After sitting in the exam room for 10-15 minutes, the doctor walks in, greets himself and after scanning my chart, asked if my blood pressure is always so high. I explained what kind of day I had and that I was not interested in any medication as blood pressure is not always at the same and constant levels. He did check my BP before leaving his office and it was below normal. Don’t jump on the medication bandwagon! You can control BP naturally yourself. There are also natural herbs to help with controlling BP if needed. Eating a diet rich in dark raw leafy vegetables (8-10 cups) will also help. Lots of green veggies, low carb, with light to moderate protein. Drinking hibiscus tea as well as getting enough sleep and periods of rest during the day is also helpful.

Next time doctor asks you why your blood pressure is always high, just tell him, well sir, I think my blood pressure was smoking some joints, it tries to hide it from me but I can smell it, and my blood pressure's eyes are always blood shot red, knocking off telling dumb jokes laughing at the walls n stuff.

Brooklyn babe in NY: aren’t your doctors prescribing anything for you? What did you learn from this presentation that could help you? Are you overweight due to food choices or medicines or alcohol? If it’s not bothering you that much, maybe for you it’s normal. I would suggest an endocrinologist or cardiac doctor to assess your condition. Try holistic doctors who usually try to find the cause of the problem rather than just treat it’s symptoms. Use patient reviews to choose a caring professional, that way you won’t get stuck with a pill pusher type, who’s in a hurry to see his next patient, or big pharma rep with typical goodies to pass out!

I have checked my BP over many different circumstances and food. Nothing really changed my BP. Over time, with swimming a mile 3 times a week and bike riding 5 days a week, some minor weight loss, yet my BP as raised for no apparent reason. Now I have to double my medication. My BP peeked out under stress/exercise too soon; now I can't swim or do any stressful exercise until we figure this out, so I don't have a stroke while swimming. Maybe it's a medication issue. It's hard to trust doctors these days. Now they want to adjust the Bar to make it fit the doctor's diagnosis, or should I call it misdiagnosis. Science is always changing, so why do people keep trusting science?

Salt contributed heavily to my care, as the foods at the kitchen was being resulted by the server, and caused my 3 meals to change. In less than 1 month off of that diet, the The Peoples Kitchen, were then notified that my blood pressure dropped back to normal, versus prescription to drugs. Also pain control management with again diet, and cholesterol lowering with Red Yeast Rice, were validated and followed up on to work for my health. I am an elder care provider, as well as have history of working with children. This education is transferable to young and old.

That is phenomenal!!! I am Starch Solution by Mcdougall and have been for 5 years, starting at age 48. My blood pressure is 125/85 but it is way better than it was. I do eat some salt. I did it to fix my cholesterol and it is ideal, as is weight and resting heart rate. All previously were too high. Few people are like you and me and willing to make diet changes. I am very lucky I found the right videos on RU-vid. 🙏🌱🌿☘
