Blood supply to the large bowel (anatomy)

The superior and inferior mesenteric arteries supply blood from the abdominal aorta to the large bowel via the left, middle and right colic arteries, among others. There are some significant anastomoses here via the marginal artery (of Drummond) and a watershed area that is at risk of ischaemia with very low systemic blood pressure.

Thanks for that mate. I just had an acute Ischemic Bowel and recently got out of hospital. You explained it very well to me on why my pain was more towards my left side. They were going to perform slice and dice emergency bowel surgery after I freaked out and had bloody diareah, but they wanted to double check with another few CT scans. LUCKILY they did. Because the scans revealed blood clots up in my lungs and some dangerously close to my heart. (Which would explain complications beforehand being out of breath walking a short distance, before the abdominal pain started). So they didn't want to operate with that there. Too dangerous. So they just put me on anti coagulation drugs for my week stay there and for the foreseeable future. Further investigation revealed a hole in my heart which caused a clot from my leg into my lungs and down into and blocked my bowel. I go back this week for a colonoscopy to access the damage. Thanks Nathan 🤠

It’s interesting how the large intestine “frames” the small intestine.

enjoyed this very much … esp clinical aspects -would you consider a video on “superior mesenteric artery syndrome” ,rare problem -took awhile for the patient to be diagnosed ..pain after eating was symptom ….. extreme weight loss , could be mistaken for other issues … it’s all about the ANATOMY !!

Dispite having completed a whole Yale course on the abdomen, I had never heard about that possible complication from the anastomosis prior to this video. Thank you. Also, now I am slightly concerned about the intermittent intense pain that I get in my splenic flexure usually following severe allergic reactions that cause significant drops of my blood pressure... 😬

manythxs---what is the relationship of the navel/belly button to the arteries-does it start to brach above or below the navel-also question what are the effects on internal tissue in large intestine after colorectal surgery...how does the surgical cut effect the internal tissues..especially if the cut is length wise-not parallel to tissues-how does it effect the tissues in respect to healing

Question if one of those arteries may rupture could there be a warm/hott sensation of liquid through out the abdomen? Are they immediately fatal? What dr would a pt have to see in order to correct the problem. Also could the pt feel pressure around the chest or aorta area? As if there is a on coming heart attack?
