This video is a tough one to interpret. It’s about the loss of innocence and the surrender to temptation. Too much symbolism and hidden clues to digest. But never about a simple relationship. BTS is deep!

In order to understand the Blood Sweat & Tears music video well, we need to think about the hint given to us in advance, . The main character, Sinclair, struggles between the comfortable and happy world of light and the new world of darkness. In the end, you fall into temptation and you can't go back to that innocent time again. That is the theme that runs through the music video. The growth of a boy who conflicts in the world of light and darkness. And each of the BTS members is in charge of good and evil (or Sinclair and Damian), and how they react when a boy encounters evil and temptation as he grows up. Resistance to temptation, resignation, and a sweet fall in temptation.

Don’t stress out too much over names because they change their hair and style so frequently even in a single MV it’s a challenge at first. These sets they built are so beautiful and each scene is like a painting tying into the many bits of art they use and evoke. The play of temptation throughout too. Not sure if anyone mentioned the Nietzsche quote above the mirror (from quora) “The quote is in German, but it translates to: “One must still have chaos in oneself to be able to give birth to a dancing star.” Friedrich Nietzsche’s ideas, especially those emphasized in his book Beyond Good and Evil, influenced Hermann Hesse in the writing of Hesse’s book Demian. The Blood Sweat and Tears MV, along with the entire WINGS album, is largely based on the book Demian. Demian is about a boy maturing and discovering the good and evil in himself, and accepting that it is his will that determines his future, not a choice between good and evil. Nietzshe’s ideas include that free will, self-consciousness, the “creation of values,” and knowledge are the inventions of moral consciousness. He also explains that the “will to power” is an explanation for all behavior, basically saying that a person always acts upon their will, rather than just good and evil. He says that his “perspective of life is beyond good and evil,” meaning that humans are not inherently good or bad. Blood Sweat & Tears is all about temptation and the war between good and evil and discovering oneself’s mature side. It’s like when you’re up late at night, staring at chocolate ice cream through the freezer, wondering if you should eat it or not. So Jin in the video stares at the Nietzsche quote after he kissed the statue. Now, right before he kissed the statue, we saw that beneath the Nietzsche quote was a mirror. The mirror showed the real reflection before he kissed it, but afterwards, his reflection was black with a white lily. This means that he’s been almost enveloped in darkness, yet he still retains some of that purity and innocence. In short, he retains both good and evil, even after giving into his temptations. Which explains the Nietzsche quote: the Chaos is evil, the dancing star is unique. In order to be unique, you have to have some chaos or evil in you to make you more interesting than just vanilla bland.” (Because I’m too lazy to type this in myself www.quora.com/Why-does-BTS-Blood-Sweat-and-Tears-have-a-Nietzsche-quote-in-it ) This is just some of the ideas behind the mirror and quote. The paintings have meaning and it’s ridiculously layered but yes all ties into temptation. Great eye for spotting that it was a set. And yes AgustD Daechwita is also stunning and hope you enjoy!

Not only is this MV referencing Damien by Herman Hesse, it is also a part of the Bangtan Universe. There’s so much to notice in this MV that no one can notice everything on first watch. Nor second, third, etc. It took me a year to put names to faces. Give yourself a break. It’s ok.

"It's kinda like funeral-esque" Damn! It actually does sound like a funeral music - funeral of the innocence in this case. That's a great notice! I've always though about that organ just as a thing bringing atmosphere in, not as a part of the story.

this MV is the king of "what can things possibly mean?". the statues, photos, colors, etc. everything is placed there for a reason. JK and V were the hardest for me to distinguish between in the beginning, until I notices they have very different eyes and that made them much easier to recognize back then

The 3 visual king of BTS… Simply to memorized : JIN : wide shoulder. Small face. He wached the great picture alone at the beginning, the one who kissed the statue. JK: Jungkook: the maknae, Golden Maknae, dont scare of heights, so usually we saw him hanging in the air anywhere V: Taehyung: wide mouth, striking face, the one who became dark angel here

BTS had a habit of creating songs that, along with their MVs, can be interpreted in multiple ways. Most people will say that this song is about temptation and the loss of innocence. You will also hear that it has to do with the book Demian by Hermann Hesse and it's similar themes, as well as the BU. However, to me, if you ignore the beautiful sets and costumes and focus on just the lyrics, then this song is about exactly what you said that it is. Their own experiences with temptation, the loss of innocence, and the dark sided of fame and the love of and for their fans. They talk about a love that is sweet but also has bitterness in it. Knowing that the grail was poison but drinking it anyway. And, in spite of the negative things they list, they repeatedly say that they want more. It makes me think of fans stalking them and mobbing them. The death threats that they've received. All of the hatred and negativity that they've experienced. The false accusations of plagiarism and chart manipulation. Yet, despite all of that, they truly love their fans and what they do for a living. So, yeah, to me, the lyrics of this song absolutely make sense with regards to their lives and not just Demian or the BU.

Thank you Mike, I really enjoyed this 🙏💜 The three vocalist that you sometimes get confused are Jin - eldest, distinctive laugh, often joking, and his singing voice is (for me) the most powerful and possibly could be suited to classic rock; V/Tae - second youngest, boxy smile (when he smiles widely his mouth is almost a rectangular shape, you can see both top and bottom teeth), and his singing voice is really soulful and haunting with such a unique tone; and Jungkook - youngest, large doe-like eyes, tats on his right hand/arm, main vocalist so he usually has the most singing parts, and for me his voice is the most suited to pop music, and he has excellent pitch…You have no problem with the fourth vocalist, Jimin. I think all four have such distinctive voices, that i used that in the beginning to put names to them, before I recognised visual cues, their voices separated them - and their speaking voices, especially V/Tae, are also quite distinctive.

i will briefly tell about the details of BS&T mv, so if you want it *now* - here you go :) the timestamps are referring to this reaction video the mv is tied to the theme of the temptation. at 1:38 behind the boys you can see a light-board "the temptation" but that's not all the meaning! it's not just the metaphorical story about how we always want bad things. the MV and the whole concept of Wings album and its short films (don't try them yet, you need to be really indepth with BTS Universe to appreciate them fully) - in another words the whole era is based on symbolism connected to the Herman Hesse's book Demian, where the main character (MC) explores his psyche while growing up (spoken lines in this MV and short films are quotes from the book). Theme goes along with coexistence of 'dark' and 'light' in our lives. MC was taught to see only the good side of the world, which is wrong, because the world isn't perfect and has bad side too. One can't live fully embracing just the good. You should accept both. The quote from the book that i really like is MC's thoughts: 'Why are only pleasant things attributed to the God if he created the whole universe? Are not both the light and dark sacred?'. The visuals of mv follow this theme: boys grew up and now facing new temptations to overcome or succumb to, thus they are acting defiantly, as if trying to seduce the viewer There's a lot of pieces in the MV that are full of symbolism: • an apple which means sin both in the religion and the book. Jimin is connected to an apple specifically in BTS Universe, but they also all have an apple on their plate in the last supper scene (6:43) • green color also plays the role of a bad things like a devil's blood or a poisonous absinthe reputed to be a hallucinogen and banned in some countries. Namjoon is connected to the absinthe, his lines are "But your wings are wings of the devil. In front of your Sweet is bitter bitter" (3:20). behind the sweetness of the drink (absinthe is often drunk with sugar) lies its real essence of bitterness. it symbolises succumbing to temptation and denying the real world in favor of an illusion • a blindfold that keeps one from seeing the worlds as it is - then when blindfold is gone you see green tears (12:17) • Black and white doors on the sides of the “The Fall of the Rebel Angels” picture (1:29) that can be representing the inner fight of good and evil. “The Fall of the Rebel Angels” itself depicts the fall into hell of angels who rebelled against God, they turn into ugly monsters and good angels give them battle. In fact, this is the main idea of the struggle between good and evil, the choice of your side in this battle. there were also sculptures of an angel and a demon on the sides of background in the set for the choreo (1:51) • behind Jungkook's back is a painting of Icarus (8:50). I think everyone is familiar with Greek mythology and is aware that Icarus was presented with wings, but he could not resist the temptation and flew too close to the sun, causing the wax in his wings to melt so he fell. The story echoes the ideas of the song and the title of the album itself: "WINGS". Behind Tae when he jumps from the balcony is "The Fall of Icarus" too (8:26) • a kiss of a fallen angel as an acceptance of a darker side and resolution of the inner chaos. Above the mirror in the MV there's a Nietzsche quote (12:21) who also has a lot to do with the book's ideology: 'You must have a chaos inside you to give birth to a dancing star'. It's a reference to Nietzsche's ideas about a superman - a creature who, in his power many times surpasses an ordinary person, denies fear and regret, and uncompromisingly follows the chosen path, being the creator of his own destiny. The superman is described in his book "Thus Spoke Zarathustra" and the ideas from there closely connect with "Demian" MC in the book has a few mentors, with help of who he learns life - and you can see that in the beginning of the MV every younger member is paired up with older one. younger boys have symbols of youth and innocence with them: a bike, a slingshot, later a lollipop. also Yoongi playing organ is a direct reference to the one of MC's mentors. Jin is an observer just like the MC in the book. You also can notice that the rest of the boys are divided into 'good' and 'bad': • Namjoon drinking absinthe (3:53) and subverting yet innocent Jungkook into it (3:43 Namjoon lights up the candle, 5:14 green wax is dripping on Jungkook's finger, 5:24 Jungkook eats the green wax) • Jimin having an issue with temptation (holding apple which is sin/lie) and Yoongi trying to "save" him from it (closing his eyes with a hand or a blindfold) 8:21 • Tae being the fallen angel himself (12:01) and Hoseok representing hope and shooting a colourful arrow to him (7:53). I think Hoseok's theme is more prominent in the Japanese version of the mv (it's COMPLETELY different, but be careful, Japanese ms reactions can get blocked). J-hope also has the statue of Pieta, that has the meanings of piety, compassion (3:59) I would say that especially from Jimin-Yoongi pairing in this mv you can tell that there's no answer what is right: good or evil. The apple is the sin, but the sin is the part of the world. Neglecting it and being blindfolded prevents you not only from "bad" things but from living a life and being yourself: the blindfold holds Jimin to a closed door and doesn't let him go (9:48) the Nietzsche quote also give a hint that hiding from bad may actually be worse then the bad itself, because without accepting all sides of self one can't reach their full potential. and BTS has a whole another era talking about exploring one's self

I have seen this video hundreds of times and picked it apart (it is my favorite song) and I just noticed something new in it while watching your video. That is how crazy this video is and how much hidden meaning and symbolism is packed into it.

As some pointed out, this goes about loss of innocence and surrender to temptation, but not necessarily in a relationship. As art has interpretations, I like to read it as the temptation of fame (as you pointed out): they knew the grail was poisoned but decided to drink it anyway ;) They gave their all (blood, sweat and tears) to be where they are. ^^ The main part is they are apart of the "celeb" world, the evil world RM mentions. They take all, but there is part of them that cannot be corrupted. You can check their videos as you do, just the sets and stuff, don't try to force yourself to find a meaning just because, you'll find it eventually ^^ The members, you'll recognize them if you continue to watch their videos, no worries about that!! The one hanging from the ceiling, our youngest, is Jungkook (the k is soft, as g) or JK yes. V has a boxy mouth/smile and "droppy" eyes, whereas JK has round big eyes and bunny smile (you'll see XD). Jin is the oldest and so it looks in the MVs: elegant, mature, handsome, not cute. -- in the MVs only!!! The others tend to be more cute or flirty than him. The "joke" with Wings (yes, album name, take a whole listen!) is RM and Jin were usually the not-so-advanced dancers (although they are mad good, the rest were/are just better) so they call themselves wings as they were usually behind and at the sides in the choreographies. BTS music videos are all arts in itself. It's up for people to interpret however they want, though they do have a running storyline. You have to be at RM's level of genius to get this the first time 😊 Sending you purple hearts 💜💜💜 and hope to see more BTS vids.

The most intricate video to interpret, rich in symbolism, psychoanalytical concepts and religious themes. I guess many have already tried to explain or direct to sources :-) If you have difficulty with Jungkook, Jin and Tae - look at their eyes and lips. Jin - dark eyes ( he never wears color contacts) and very, very plump lips. Tae - unusually piercing eyes and boxy lips. Jungkook - gorgeous doe eyes and regularly shaped lips with a tiny mole under them.

This MV more than any other requires the watching of an explanation video to understand it in my opinion. The basic theme is temptation.

Well... This MV does have a deep meaning and is part of the BU, their is also a Japanese version with a completely different set 😁 in both MVs there are a lot of details referencing the BU. Nothing is thrown in there by coincidence. Every shot has a meaning, the feathers, the paintings, the wax, the color of the status... etc Like a lot of comments are saying, this is based on a book called "Demian" and it's about the temptation, loss of innocence and the battle to diffrenciate between good and evil. At the beginning of the video JK is suspended not V and V is not the youngest of the group, that would be Jungkook (JK) Probably no one noticed that it was set built in the studio except for ARMYs mainly because we know the background already and are aware that this was a set that was built for this video in a studio.

That's so funny. When I was a baby ARMY, I mixed up JK and Jin for a while. I cane in during Fake Love era, when they all had black hair, so I was lost. You learn early on you can't go by their hair color, because it could be different tomorrow. 😂

2:30, JK hanging from the swing...behind him is a painting of the lament for Icarus. The artwork they included was also very purposeful, lol. Also notice how much they use black and white.. a black door versus a white door, a black statue versus a white statue, etc. As the video is all about the pull between good and evil, temptation, and the loss of innocence.. There is a reason that ARMY "theorists" spend lots of time watching, rewatching, and analyzing all the details in their music videos!

There is a story in the MVs that are being told, connected to the universe, but there are also meanings in the songs. They discuss themes as a group, but often the lyrics themselves, written by members, have personal meanings also. None of the fans know what V is referring to in his song Stigma. It fits into the fictional story, but is also related to a personal story he tells through the song.

2:53 this is jungkook who is the youngest member upside down with the lollipop. This is based on Demian the book and not about their career in that sense… it’s about not hiding your darkest parts as much bc it’s impossible to be 100% pure and sometimes all or nothing just isn’t realistic. It’s okay to own that imperfection in a sense. The colors are important representing the mixture of light and dark is the green and the pink …. Which is why at the end after they’ve all accepted the green into them in one way or another …. It’s visually shown using of the green on them in their individual scenes. The rewatchability is pure genius lol so much to unpack. V is the one with the wings and jin is the one who started saying he was “world wide handsome” a long time ago and the world agrees but he is at the beginning staring at the picture… and he kisses the statue. Jin is the oldest, jungkook is the youngest who is good at everything the main vocalist and center of bts, v is our little actor charismatic king with the deep baritone voice. These 3 are vocalists and in earlier years a lot of people mix up v and jungkook even though they look insanely different really but even the other members would call them each other’s name bc they were so similar when they were younger … and v actually thought a pic of jk was himself bc he said something about jungkook and him having similar bridges to their noses or something. It’s easy as they get older but it happens. Maybe you should try watching some kind of solo compilation or song 🎵 f jin , jungkook and v so you will be able to recognize them for who they are and address them accordingly for the important roles they have in this group.. just as much as the other 4 may be more beneficial than anything honestly

In nursing school they taught us “go with your gut, or your instinct.” The first ten minutes of this video (that’s how far I’ve gotten), and you questioning yourself the whole time when you’re pretty much right every single time… that’s what this reminds me of. Names are very very hard for me to remember. Even learning BTS a bunch of gorgeous talented opposite sex, I struggled with the names for a while. So *POV you’re doing pretty fantastic.

Too much symbolism in the vid because the MV (and the whole Wings album) revolved around Demian, the book from Herman Hesse. It mainly talks about falling into temptation and loss of innocence, just like growing up.

Its funny bc V, JK and Jin always get confused for each other by new BTS viewers all the time lol. But its ok. In time you'll learn who they are by face and voice bc you can never go by hair be its always constantly changing. But JK was in the swing (not V). He is the youngest (maknae meaning youngest in Korean). He you'll see and hear the most bc he's the main vocalist and part of the dance line. V (Taehyung) has the deep sultry soulful voice. But don't underestimate V's voice bc he can hit those high notes too. And Jin aka Mr. World Wide Handsome is the oldest and he is 1 of the visuals of the group (I mean bc they're all beautiful lol) and always blowing hand kisses and telling dad jokes. Y'know you are actually doing ok with the names and we can tell that you are trying so its all good! Nobody starts the BTS journey knowing everything about the guys, in a few weeks you will look back on these moments and wonder how you ever got them confused!!! Another easy indicator for Jin is his lips (I'm trying to think of a non-creepy sounding way to describe his lips but they are plush?). Similar to Jimin, he has Bratz doll lips.

Lol I totally understand, I also have bad memory with faces and names. Being an Asian, and working in the US was a tough one for me. I kept mixing people not because they look the same but because they both have the same hair color and length. It took me few months working with them until I actually get confident calling them out. Lol its ok if you understand the meaning behind these videos. That’s why we have a million ARMY’s working around the clock. BTS puts a lot of symbolism from different media, art, and books. So it takes many hours and people to come together to collect knowledge about these references. Add in there might be some cultural aspects that Western audiences might not understand. How certain sounds were made by upper class/elitists. BTS members go to many art museums and Taehyung loves learning about artists. Plus Map of the Soul 7 shows they even read philosophy books. So that is another headache, if you had college Philosophy, you know.

I am glad that I had my own first impressions, and even if I now know the "official theory" behind it, I always suspect, that BTS puts so many layers in their art, that everyone can pull out something individual for themselves! I love their art, their message and their personas! I hope you'll like them too, because knowing them is very much enriching for me! I will also repeat my comment from one of the previous videos, since you found it difficult to differenciate Jin from the others (and he's my bias = I feel that he is a kind of mirror that I can see myself better in, I guess?): could you react to Jin's solo song "Epiphany", preferably the most viewed live performance? I am really curious of your impression, because you seem to say exactly what you think (unlike some other reactors), and this is a song that impacted me deeply indeed. Hello my friend! I know lots of my fellow ARMYs will give you the full explanation about this video, so I'll give you the really quick and simple one. Temptation, Fallen Angel, the battle with in - between good and evil. I'm not good with names so i wont name the artworks or psychologist that inspired this video, but in the first scene when they walk into the museum, you can see Jin (strawberry blond hair - world wide handsome named by the fans - not self proclaimed - he just ran with it) standing looking at a painting. That is a famous painting about the fallen angel. At the same time on both sides of the painting you can see a white and a black door, as in what path would you choose?. The rest of the video is about each of them falling into temptation (That temptation might be fame, work, youth, recklessness, forbidden things....but falling into temptation non the less). This is the simplest explanation to it. Of course lots of things in the video have artistic references, and psychological references, but like i said, I know lots of ARMYs will give you the full explanation for them. The three you have a hard time recognizing.... JIN (oldest - the one that kissed the statue), V (the blond fallen angel), JK (the youngest - hanging upside down from the swing). ✌🏻💜
