Shows how blood typing is done using an Eldoncard. Also includes a bit about blood typing --- What is on the card? What is the reaction that can happen on the card?
OK, BY FAR THE BEST VIDEO ON THIS PROCESS!! He was/is spot on. Watching this video prior to actually doing the test, was the smartest idea. The written directions seem a little too wordy. I recommend watching the tutorial before doing the test!
Flaw: the spatulas should not be placed on the card at first. They may get contaminated and put some of the antibodies from the card into your finger and ruin the test. Also , you should wipe away the first drop of blood. Do not massage your finger after you wipe it with alcohol, otherwise your alcohol wipe was pointless. I’m a medical assistant so I’ve been trained in how to do this in a professional setting , I’m not just making these things up. Thank you fir the video. You may want to edit it or put a note In there though
Not a bad idea to line up the Eldon sticks at the beginning. But definitely NOT inside the circles. I tell my students to line them up outside the card.
Thank you very much for posting this video. I've always wondered about my blood type and couldn't get a test when blood was done. (Actually, I could have but would have had to pay separately for it).
I did it wrong. I used the same spatula for two of the circles 😣 the results were B positive and I already ordered another one to do it again. Thank you for the video
Thanks so much Dr. I watch very late from the video posted but I bought this kit and follow your video. I found out my blood type is Rh(-) .. wow .. I'm worry cause I do some research after this test
Make sure you're warm before using Lancet. Also make sure to put enough force. I've ruined it, but lucky ordered a 2 pack. Trust me it does not hurt at all.
thanx I have to do this because none of the doctors at my hospital will tell me my blood type before during or after ordering a blood draw its not in my med chart and if i give blood I will always faint so theres that thanx
Good point. These kits are sold for educational purposes only, not diagnostic purposes. I can tell you that my tests have been accurate. I have had my blood type tested after donating blood and when I was in the Navy and those tests agree with the results I have gotten from these test kits over and over again (I do my blood type with one of these cards each semester in order to show my students how to get it done).
Well apparently I don't bleed. My finger healed up and I ran out of blood, had to grab a scalpel. Don't know if the card dried or ran out while trying to get more blood but they all look non coagulated. Now I'm not sure if O neg or just broke the test.
My science class did this about that time as well. Just ordered some kits for a neat afternoon project with my grown son and his son. I remember I'm B- (from all those years ago) and my son is ?+ (from the shots I had to get during my pregnancy). My son's excited, as they didn't do anything like this when he went through school (go figure), and we'll just see how the grandkid does with it...
I honestly don't know... It might work, but I would not trust the results. There is more than blood in menstrual fluid and that might throw off the results. The cards were developed for testing whole blood only. You might have better luck working on curing the phobia :) Here is a video of a licensed psychologist describing how he helped a man with a severe needle phobia--- ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RMc-mnpyWqE.html
I have asked a doctor about this when I was younger and the answer is definitely not. That blood has different bacteria in it that would give an unclear result. You cannot use it for an accurate, clean, fresh, blood sample.
I just found out yesterday that I am Rh negative. I had to get a shot called Rho(D) immune globulin since I was pregnant but besides that would I be able to get a test like this to take at home to see exactly what blood type I am because the whole Rh negative thing is extremely confusing. Does it mean I could be A negative, B negative or is Rh negative it's own blood type?
Yes, you can use a test like this to find out your full blood type. I'm surprised that your doctor/clinic did not run and share with you your full blood type... Maybe they just check for Rh. You might ask them next time you see them.
@@renhartung Thank you for replying and I think they only tested my Rhesus factor since I was pregnant but I am glad to know that I can use this to find out my full blood type
I'm AB negative and my husband is A negative so my doctor didn't give me a Rhogam? shot because he trusted me. Our son is B negative. He is now 28 years old. I could have been in a sticky spot if I had cheated on my husband with some other man with positive blood though. I still have my medical notes from 1992/1993 where the doctor wrote she is AB- and her husband is A-. They also stamped a black star and wrote "RH Neg." in large letters on the upper right corner of my medical record. It's a big deal if the mother has RH Negative and the father of the baby has RH Positive blood.
While the control circle does not have any antibodies it does have the rest of the ingredients just like the other circles. So, if agglutination (clumping of cells) does happen in the control circle something went wrong and the test is invalid. This could be due to a problem with the card itself (contaminated ingredients) but is more likely due to an error of cross contamination when applying the water and blood... If the person doing the test accidentally mixes the samples from multiple circles on the card the control will likely agglutinate.
It's a slight pin prick. Honestly it feels no worse than a static shock, you know when you wear socks and rub your feet on a carpet then your touch someone? It's legitimately the same as that. It's over in less than a milisecond :)
Hi thank you for the helpful video. All my life I have been told by my parents that I am blood type O. But this test is telling me I am A positive😳. How accurate is this test?
These are pretty accurate, but obviously it's not a medical grade test (only because you are doing it yourself), so the results should be taken with a grain of salt I think. If you want to be sure donate blood the next time you hear of a blood drive. I know that American Heart sends out a card to donors that has their blood type on it.
It's possible that both your mom and dad have the genes for O-. Look up what heterozygous means. Mom must have a Gene for B and for O. And Dad has a Gene for Rh and a Gene for Rh-. For you to be O- you must have two genes for O and for Rh-. I hope that helps.
Here's a question to the origin of man. It concerns the blood test. I asked everyone that reads this to look into your own family and conduct this experiment. Follow the blood type of members in your family back as many generations as possible. What I have concluded, the mother's blood is passed on. I believe, every daughter has a mother back to the very first mother. And in my case that goes back to O- blood found in Great Britain. And furthermore concludes that man did not migrate to Great Britain from Europe, rather man started in many, many places around the world. The myth and Theory of man's origin from that in Africa can be debunked in so many different ways. All one has to do is understand the word indigenous and research Australia.
Wait, do you mean the rh factor or ABO grouping? Because I'm pretty sure type O and rhesus neg are recessive. In my case, not sure what I am (possibly O+) my mother's is O+ but her mom's is O-
It actually has nothing to do with the mothers blood type.. type B and A blood is dominant therefore if the father has B or A or AB and mom has O the child is most likely to have the fathers blood type not the mothers as in my case with my daughter. i have O he has B and she has B which caused an abo incompatibility
Sorry for the delay. I believe there are two reasons that the blood does not run off. One is that the card surface is hydrophobic (repels water) and so the blood (which is mostly water) beads up kind of like water on a recently waxed car. The second is water's cohesive nature (it's attracted to itself and so stays together).
If none of the circles reacted your blood type is O negative. That makes you what we call a universal donor because your blood type can be given to any other blood type.
Thanks Ron, I read how to instructions, over and over, maybe I missed it. I get my blood tested every 4 months, I mentioned to them that I would like to know my blood type, but they didnt seem to care, what I wanted, just what the doctor ordered. If I can give blood to anyone, can I get blood from anyone?. I told my Niece that I dont have a blood type, so that proves Im a alien.
You could ask the doctor to order a blood typing test, but they usually don't want to do one unless you need blood. If a person has O- blood they can give blood to any other blood type, but they can only receive from O- So, O- is considered the universal donor. The universal recipient blood type is AB+. That blood type can accept blood of any ABO type but they can only give to AB+ type.
I asked the Doctor , but they really dont seem to care, Someone told me if I find one of those Blood Donation Buses, and give blood, they can tell me what type I have. Dont know how true that is. Wonder if I just go to my normal blood test place, and try to get it done and just pay for it myself. Kinda just a walk in situation. ?
O is considered the "universal donor" because O (especially O-) blood can be given to all other blood types. The opposite is AB+ blood type which is considered the "universal acceptor" since a person with AB+ blood can accept any other blood type.
Wade is correct... If you are Rh negative there will be no reaction in the third circle (no agglutination or clumping of the red blood cells). The third circle (labeled "anti D"") will look like the control if you are Rh negative.
And the test showed... You are anaemic... That was so much blood from a pin prick, I've never had that much come out of a lancet prick and I've used 100's.
I'm O+ (that's actually the most common type, at least in the USA). O- is pretty rare though (only about 6% of the population). Also, O- blood can give blood to any other blood type. That would make you very popular with the Red Cross :)
My Mama was RH negative & My Daddy was RH positive. My siblings are O+ and I didn't pay attention to what mine was back when giving birth to 5! All of our children are O+ and my husband is as well. Now I'm thinking about doing an Eldon Card Home test.
Ren Hartung According to the instructions of all four have red specks in them, like mine did, it is void. I have ordered another one on amazon so will try it again. But thanks 😊
@@alaurahwillow155 -- Oh, so all of your circles reacted (agglutenated)... That means either a bad card or cross contamination during the test. Make sure you use a separate spatula for each circle and don't touch the spatulas to the liquid on the card before using them to collect your blood.
You said control contains everything else that the others have except antibodies, But you just finished saying the others contained antibodies. That's all you said about them! So, the way you said it is a little confusing. Are you actually trying to say that the others contain things 'in addition' to the antibodies that you talked about. And that the control contains those additional things as well, but no antibodies?
@@pravinstan5109 Any part of the body that has blood must have arteries, capillaries, and veins... Where the blood comes from actually does not really matter, as long as it is your blood.
A person that has A in their blood type and not B would produce anti-B antibodies-- I think that is where you are going with the idea of mimicking real life... But, on the Eldoncard we are using each circle to detect the presence of these different antigens (A, B, and Rh). The anti-A circle contains antibodies against A antigen and is used to detect whether or not the person's blood contains A antigen. I hope that make sense.
I'm sure a lab technician would frown on that, but I think as long as you capture some blood that is still in liquid state it would work... However, you are more likely to get accurate and reliable results doing it the way the instructions tell you to do it.
The immune system makes antibodies against the antigens we do not have. A person with type A blood does not have B antigens, so that person's immune system will make B antibodies.
@@renhartung thank you so much dear doctor. I would like to ask you another question and my question is how the blood type affects the pregnancy and cause the embryo to die and how to treat that effect. Thank you.
Funny thing... pregancy tests use antibodies too, just a bit differently since the chemical being tested for is much smaller than a red blood cell. Your question does make me wonder if a simpler blood typing test could be created :)
@Crucibelle Gloves are required when testing so no cross contamination happens. Distilled is used for it's purities. I do chemical lab test every day and know a thing or two. And watch your language the next time you comment. Your inexperienced view of controlled sample testing is duly noted! Stay in school kid.
