When dropping off the Corvair engine for assessment and possible rebuild, I had a nice chat and walk around with my good friend Dave "Turbo" Binnie. We looked at a couple of his Chevrolet Corvairs and talked about the modifications he makes to these air cooled flat six wonders. He has owned over 100 Corvairs since 1976 and is a wealth of knowledge in the Corvair world. Enjoy this walk around and look at his cars.

Corvair's are fantastic cars. I've had a bunch of them, and I really enjoy them. Dave has a nice collection and it's always changing with a few constants that will always stay.

D. Binnie and T. Keosababian are my two candidates for Corvair Master of Modifications Hall of Fame, as they both have explored and pushed the capabilities of the Corvair engine further than any others, GM/Chevy included. Teach me, Master.

@@SlowCarFix Been in contact w/ Kevin Nash recently about his custom cooling fan and I believe he has a similar set-up I saw on another video. Folk in the colder climates don't necessarily like those center-mounted carb set-ups because of icing issues, but here in California I don't much have that to worry about and have considered going w/ one myself. Maybe even try a blow-through set-up myself.

Growing up, our family had a 64 Monza convertible (110), later on I had a 66 Corsa convertible (140). My Mom worked at a tire store and was given a free set of Michelin radials, it was funny seeing mechanics shake their heads when my five foot and a bit mom tried to tell them the tires weren't flat. ;-D

I've often wondered how this would perform with the bigger valves in and out ports with the turbo. The higher compression would need the water injection. Hope you pressurized the fuel pump and carbs.

sorry, not my car, I was just featuring a friend's collection while I was visiting. Look up Dave Binnie, he's on Facebook, the forums etc. He has been doing blow through turbo Corvair engines successfully for decades. He is the owner and presenter of the cars in the video.

Very cool. I have a 64 autocross car. It had several turbo setups in it. It is interesting you using a buick T04 turbo. There are so many new turbo setups I have been thinking reworking one. Subaru has changed turbos on many of their new cars so I am thinking the new or newer turbos may spool up quicker. So much newer airflow tech now days. Nice to see your car

This is actually a friend of mine's car, Dave Binnie. He now is running a fuel injected blow through turbo on this car. He changes it up from time to time.

Hey, Dave - I would love to know how to convert my carbs to blow-thru, like your turbo Vair. Any chance of getting a PDF or email with the necressary steps for the re--work? Nice collection of Vairs, by the way. I've been told you and T. Keosababian are the go-to guys for turbos on Corvairs. I've got one '65 that's in sore need of attention, but will have to wait for a shoulder replacement. Uhg! A pleasant 2021 to you from the other side of the border.

V.E: Carburetor modifications are relatively simple and few. The floats are re-enforced with fine copper tubing, and re-jetted to.053 on primaries, and .50 on secondary. On most of my blow-through cars, I modify the tops to use a hose and clamp for connection with the blow pipe(to the turbocharger). In this case, I just used the factory cross pipe with original hooks. It’s crude, but works very well. I. Don’t know how to directly contact you from here, so I gave you hopefully a step in the right direction. I can be found on “corvair center” an PM. Hope this helps.

search for Dave Binnie on Facebook. Reach out to him, he'll tell you all about it. He's built many blow through turbo cars.

My experience with the 140 "X" air passage from the center mounted filter was that the seal out at the carbs wasn't great, and that the little "J" hooks would distort the holes in the carb tops. And that was with just vacuum created by the engine. I really am curious about how well this system seals under pressure, and how much boost can be pushed through the carbs.
@SlowCarFix
@SlowCarFix 2 года назад
Are you running the gaskets on the breather where it joins the carbs? I'm curious to your sealing issue. Dave ran this set up for several years and many miles without issues. He had modifications he completed in the carbs including to the floats. I'm not sure the specifics. He has been doing blow through turbo stuff on Corvairs for approaching two decades. However, of interest, his latest iteration is utilizing a Holley Sniper fuel injection set up on a IECO center mount. His assembly and attention to detail is super impressive. I should probably bring my camera next time I'm visiting and get an update on his black turbo car. The Burgundy '66 has since been sold to another friend of mine.

2 beautiful cars. I had 2 Corvairs in the 70s. Since your car is blow through, have you explored the possibilities of intercooling (rather than water injection)? Problems with location of chargecooler radiator location /supplemental fuel delivery?
