When I heard that relegation was floated I was kind of intrigued. As a big fan of European football (where relegation is standard procedure at all levels of the pyramid) I never really understood why American sports didn't have promotion/relegation. Especially considering there are minor leagues for most/all sports (I think?). It brings an extra layer of jeopardy to every season. Like not only do you have to not be bad because you desire success but also because if you're too bad you go down. Also means that teams that are consistently not good go down bringing up teams that are performing in the lower leagues. It also means you care about not just the top of the league but also the bottom. Personally I dig promotion/relegation

I think it's great that if goes to either Rockets, Hornets, or Pelicans. If he goes somewhere else with a bad roster, he might have the same problems as Luka where he got too good too fast that he's single handedly dragging his team out of the lottery, removing the chance to draft a number two beside him. At least in those three teams mentioned, there's already other young all-star or portential all-star talent he could frow with in LaMelo, BI+Zion, and Jabari.

Imagine it gets to be where two of the teams that are tanking on a 15 or 16 loss streak go up against eachother and try to outlose the other. The floor would swap sides. People would try to score own goals and the opponents would try to block them XD it would be like that south park little league episode.

I think a team like Jazz are Spurs trading all their good players to tank even harder for Wenbanyama is a bad idea. You got a core that’s working and winning games, I think they should add depth rather than subtracting. It would be a shame if they did that as like a lot of you I’m not a fan of tanking. Teams need to realize building a winning culture and attracting good free agents is how you run a franchise.

Tanking might not be an actual issue this year. Let's think about it this way, as you said, we might see a lot of players traded by the deadline to add vets to contenders and play in teams in order to bare rosters to tank. Okay. We might then see one of the most competitive strech of basketball after the deadline with 20 teams trying to sneak up in the playoffs. I'm not even talking about the playoffs... The other 10 teams will tank but it doesn't matter since it happens every single year around that time.

Here are the many problems with relegation: 1. G league stadiums cannot host a typical NBA audience in them 2. Relegated NBA teams will not lower ticket prices enough for it to be worth going to games 3. Not only can a lot of money be lost, but it puts teams in a position to sacrifice long term success for short term gain to avoid relegation. Say what you want about tanking, but I at least respect it because those franchise’s are trying bring their cities a title in the long run, unlike teams that choose to stay on the .500 treadmill 4. NBA relegated teams would be extremely dominant in the G league, while promoted teams would lose over 75 games consistently. NBA/g league talent gap is much wider than the soccer/football gap. 5. The g-league teams are developmental teams for actual NBA organizations. In recent memory the Rockets simultaneously had the worst NBA team and best g-league roster, yet the Houston roster is still so much better than their g league counterpart. If that wasn’t the case, most of that g league roster would’ve been promoted without relegation, but that just didn’t happen. Also promotion/relegation in that instance is bad for both sides in that the higher value prospects would be better served by playing NBA competition while the actual g league talent is not ready for NBA level competition either. 6. It widens the gap between large markets and small markets as large market teams will have more ability to use FA as a way to avoid it. This creates a downward spiral for younger franchises in smaller markets as their valuable young players may start behaving more like vets by requesting trades while still under contract. 6a. The NBA is the most market driven sport in America. In the MLB and NFL, star players are a lot more likely to stay put and when they leave, location is MUCH less of a factor compared to money and franchise competency. Tanking is the most viable path for most of the NBA to acquire high caliber talent. It’s how Cleveland got Lebron, who despite being the second best player in basketball history could not get DWade and Bosh to join him in Cleveland, so Lebron left to go to the glitzy glamorous Miami. Stars of Lebron and Wade’s caliber don’t willingly join teams in place like Cleveland or Minnesota. Heck, they don’t even go to places like Houston, Dallas or Atlanta. From what I have seen getting rid of tanking puts teams not named Lakers, Warriors, Clippers, Heat, Celtics, Nets, Knicks and maybe even Bulls at a further disadvantage that the NBA should be trying to lessen not widen. If trying to achieve a level playing field matters (which it should) then the NBA has no business eliminating tanking, unless they also ensure that the top 6-8 markets cannot hoard all the top talent, which is something they have shown little to no interest in doing.
