Blown SBC Bottom End Build | Degree Cam | Short block assembly

Building the bottom end of the shortblock for the blown SBC 406. Also finding TDC (finding top dead center), check bearing clearance using plastigage, degreeing the cam at .050 along with installing spiral locks (spirolox) on the Diamond pistons and Callies Ultra Rods. This is the Callies Magnum crank with BBC snout, Custom Diamond pistons, Callies Ultra I Beam 6" rods with heavy duty thick wall pins. All of this in a Dart SHP block. Getting ready for the 8-71 Roots blower!!
This new build is a Blown SBC Gen1 Boosted - SBC 406 Dart SHP block with Callies crank, Callies rods, and custom Diamond Pistons with a 8-71 Roots Blower from The Blower Shop with helical rotors, ATI turbo 400 and 4-link coilover Ford 9 inch. Planning on starting with 22 lbs of boost on methanol with a FuelTech ECU and dual wideband O2 sensors. This is a 48 Ford Coupe powered by chevy!

For someone who is old school and so precise why would you use a cloys hex adjust timing setup?? It's basically a upper timing gear with egg shaped oblong holes, the clamping force of the Alan head bolt is the only thing keeping it tight!, If set lots of engines including two of my own that move around and get the cam timing off and in results bent vales or dropped valves

It is *NOT* a hex adjust set. Top gear is set and crank gear has -4, 0 and +4 keyways. Not sure where you got it was a hex adjust, but it is not. If I said it was in the video I was mistaken. Go fast, go straight! Be Safe!

Sorry, I don't have that info handy. SBC standard block with BBC snout.. contact Cloyes or Summit. Go fast, go straight! Be SAFE!

Why not use a gear drive instead of a timing chain?

Frank Clark jr thanks so much for your comments! We seriously considered it, but I don't have a good reason for not running a gear drive other than I feel like the chain does absorb a tad of any vibration. Go fast, go straight! Be Safe!!

There is only 1 reason to run a gear drive in a SBC (or most other V-8's) and that's if your cam is running other accessories such as a mechanical fuel pump. Every other application should use a quality chain set or possibly a belt drive. The gear drives with the dog bone style dual idler gears are absolute garbage, the ones with the fixed idler such as what Milodon makes is far superior.

@@frankclarkjr6369 My pleasure! It drives me crazy every time I dyno an engine with a gear drive, the whine drowns EVERY other engine noise I am listening for, and overwhelms an otherwise wonderfully sounding engine. At least the fixed idler style gear drives aren't quite so loud.

I hate videos where you fast forward with no explanation. I would really like to see how and the trouble of installing the spiral locks and you fast forward like it’s nothing 🤬
