Nice episode Cam. You really need to be a contortionist to replace some of these parts. I wonder how the dealership would have done this. Also, you saved yourself a bunch of money by DIY. That was very in-depth so thanks for doing that for us Cam. Keep going Cam!

Super informative and very well done. I was doing this over the weekend and was on the home stretch when I pulled the threads out of the block with the bolt that holds the turbo oil feed line where it comes off the block. Any suggestions for a fix?

Glad the video helps but that really sucks on the bolt hole in the block - it depends on your apetite for dodginess and how badly the threads were pulled. If its not too bad you could bodge with epoxy but your best bet would be to either tap a new bolt size in, or helicoil if you can't fit a bigger bolt.

Great video, so much detail. Did you have any issues with the timing chain tensioner when you owned this? I read they can be an issue on the earlier N20's.

No issues at all, but I think you either have a catastrophic failure or you don't. I still have mine and touchwood it's still going strong.

That's really great know-how tips for beemers, my 328i GT xdrive(N20) has problem with the exhaust smell comes in to the cabin, I wanna try to test with smoke leak detector to find the point, Could you give me some tips to do it please..

Bit late to respond to this one but if you're getting a smell in the cabin you should either be able to hear a leak or look for any seals/grommets near the rear end - airflow when driving will pull fumes into the cabin if there's leaks

have 2014 328 with 90k km on it. How long do those turbos last before needing replacing?

I think they're all about the same. 150-200k. Changing oil regularly helps.

Hi, do you have any tips for removing the wastegate without removing the turbo? I cant get my T45 seated with my clearances on the x1.

Nothing ground breaking, just get as many knuckles, extensions and flexis as you can and try and build something up. Remove as much as you can around it too.

What was the mileage when you have this turbo problem? and What was the reason for seized turbo?

was 170,000 kms (~105,000 miles) - most reports i've heard is that's about the average lifespan as like everything BMW the tight bearing tolerances eventually catch up with it.

Just a tricky one man, i tried to show it as best i could but its just a case of moving lines around carefully until they drop together. Hope you managed to get it sorted.

Can i replace the turbo on a 2013 528i xdrive the same exact way?

Yeah should be a very similar process however you might find clearances a bit tighter on stuff because of the front driveshafts.

@@hamburger6133 just take it slow and be ready to get your hands in tight places. You could also get yourself a copy of ISTA that has instructions so you know the correct order for things etc. Worst case you may also be able to remove an engine mount to get things out.

This Is a twin turbo, I can see only one turbo.

It's a Twin-Power Turbo - just BMWs way of saying it's a twin scroll turbo, not that there's two turbos.

I have twin turbo too, 525D/ 218 ps/ N47 und I have the little turbo on the top of a big turbo. Another construction ).

Lol, you can get new cassettes for them but they're almost as much as a second hand turbo and I couldn't be 100% sure it would fix the issue. It was completely locked up, it wasn't something that could be serviced without new parts.
