Also, even 1080p videos from places like netflix are generally more compressed than Blu Ray (less colors, more articacts, ect.). It's not much, but it can be compounded with other factors. You also know when getting a Blu-Ray (or DVD) that you are giving money to the studio if you like the movie, and you PERMENANTLY own the movie. On streaming services, things can change. The service could pull the video for some reason, or it could go out of business entirely (unlikely for something like netflix, but the future is always changing). If you have it on Blu-Ray or DVD, as long as you have the working disc, a player, a TV that can connect with your player, and electricity, you will always be able to watch it legally.

It feels somewhat sharper and the film grain effect is much more noticable on blu-ray than netflix since netflix compression removes it. Also dark scenes looks 10x better than on streaming services. If you compare the skin details, it looks like look like beige mud on the streaming services.

Redstone Tech If you're talking about Compact Disc, Or DVD, you're right. But if you're talking about Blu-Ray, you can't be farther from the truth. For example, Blu-Ray's look better, offer extras, has surround sound, It doesn't eat up internet to use, etc. To say that they are becoming obselete is ridiculous.

I love my blu rays. Sure, I don't really have a setup that makes good use of the audio, but I love all the bonus features that come on them, and I never have to worry about a quality drop cause my signal dips for any amount of time, or goes out. Have you ever tried using a Playstation 3 on a CRT HDTV over a component connection? That would be the ultimate Blu-ray experience. CRT HDTVs have better responsiveness and more contrast than digital flat panels. You'd be able to get native YCbCr color space over a component connection instead of having to convert to limited RGB over HDMI.
@Chronoflation
@Chronoflation 3 года назад
@@MrUnknownuser164 I haven't but now I really want to. Man, I need to get myself a good HD CRT. Something good to play my retro consoles alone would feel worth it to me, but I'm sure that blu-rays would look amazing on one
@MrUnknownuser164
@MrUnknownuser164 3 года назад
@@Chronoflation I'd personally limit usage of retro consoles to ordinary standard definition CRTs with composite (480i). I specifically mentioned the Playstation 3 because it's the only console capable of displaying Blu-ray discs on an analog HDTV over component (1080i). I personally want to be able to get an external HD-DVD drive for my old Xbox 360 S, along with getting a CRT HDTV (since I already have the component cable), but that would be a lot of effort.

I must be really old, because I still like physical media. I buy Blu-Rays, PS4 games and Xbox One games physically. My reasoning behind that is that: 1. I like looking at the games/movies on my wall 2. I like being able to lend games/movies out 3. If I ever go to sell a system it's nice to be able to keep some games for myself and not be forced to sell all of them.

What's pushing customers right back into owning physical media today is that streaming services are raising their prices to the point where they are no longer affordable or seen as being a good value. Also, people are finally starting to realize now that just because your favorite film is available to stream today doesn't me that it will still be on-line next week or next year. Streamers change out their catalogs all the time. Also, if your Internet connection happens to go down for any reason, well, then you won't be streaming anything until it comes back up.

in my opinion (at least in canada) netflix has certainly not replaced optical discs, and it has nothing to do with internet speed/data caps, it has to do with the lack of the high end content. i dont care for tv for the most part and would much rather have a blu-ray of a movie i actually want to watch rather than watch 10 b-movies or binge watch a tv series i dont care about on netflix. simply put, for me anyways netflix will only replace physical media when they can actually have EVERY movie available, including new releases on day one. on a side note, wow i cant believe blu-ray has already been out for 10 years, i feel old now thanks luke :P

Umm, no? You can do what pirates have done for decades: download the lossless format and store it on your device. If you cannot stream it real-time, you can simply download it onto a storage device, "buffering" in a way. Especially when storage is cheap and becoming even cheaper. I see no practical reasons for storing media on optical disks, when you can just download everything onto a cheap HDD. And if it breaks, you can simply re-download it via servers. And even if servers break down, there is p2p which is virtually life-long. Just face it, the slow and fragile optical disks are becoming obsolete.

I'm very surprised you didn't mention the quality difference between streaming and Blu-Ray caused by the bitrate gap between the two delivery methods. BD can use up to 40 Mbps for the video data, Netflix by comparison uses between 5-8 Mbps for their 1080p streams, both formats tend to use h264 compression (or sometimes the comparable VC1 format for Blu-ray). This leads to far fewer compression artifacts with the Blu-Ray image compared to the streamed video.

Physical media like Blu-ray and DVD are a much better option than streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, Paramount+, HBO Max, and Starz. Physical media offers a higher quality picture and sound while also being much cheaper overall. Additionally, the majority of physical media is also DRM-free, meaning you can take it and use it with any player on any platform. Overall, physical media is definitely the superior choice when compared to streaming services.

Something that should be emphasized is Blu-ray's typically higher video bit rate. I'm sure there were at least a few people who scoffed when Luke said that average-user internet speeds can't handle 4K video -- after all, plenty of people can watch 4K quite easily on RU-vid even with sub par internet right now -- but resolution isn't everything. Try watching a gameplay video on RU-vid at 4K and you'll still notice tons of blocky artifacts during fast motion, areas with foliage, etc, because RU-vid's bitrate and video format can't allow for a huge amount of space to be taken up even at 4K. Something like Bluray, on the other hand, which even has disks as large as 128 GB depending on the technology, can afford to have really, really great looking fast-motion scenes.

Personally, I'd love to be able to see a Blu-ray movie on a PS3 connected to a CRT HDTV (which actually exists, with better responsiveness and deeper contrast than a digital flat panel) over a component connection (since Blu-ray discs are natively encoded in YCbCr instead of RGB). That would be the dream. I'd also like to see an HD-DVD on my Xbox 360 on a CRT HDTV over a component connection, but the trouble of getting a discontinued optical disc format probably wouldn't be worth it.

So motion will not be fluent and the PS3 has to do 3/2 frame pull up. Another downside is that for movies sample-and-hold displays make sense, especially with black frame insertion, as it looks much closer to theater projectors. A CRT draws line after line, very weird.

Are Blu-Ray discs STRICTLY for video, or can they be used as "data discs" like CD/DVD-R/R+ as well? A 25GB archival/storage format medium might be nice. I know HDDs are bigger and data can be edited (deleted, modified, added), but that requires another enclosure and another connection. I'm considering options where I can just insert a simple disc to access files I do not use often, but can still access when/if necessary, and not worry about the data being accidentally deleted or over-written.

I noticed a lot of banding in the picture while watching the movie streamed, and we have the bandwidth for full HD streaming. Watch it on Blu-ray, much better clarity, not to mention I have the extended cut which made the movie even better. @lemons2300
@lemons2300 4 года назад
Those game consoles do not use DVD-type discs to store games. PS3 and PS4 physical games use Bluray type discs (for Xbox One I'm not sure). And when we talk DVD and Bluray, we're mostly referring to it as a video storage format. CDs are becoming obsolete in favor of the more convenient streaming as well as digital purchases. Normal CDs also do not support hi-fi beyond 16-bit/44.1 kHz. And when there had been more hi-fi formats available in the market such SACDs and DVD audio, they had not really been taken advantage of in the first place for whatever reason. CDs can be seen as the last surviving major physical audio format. They're still convenient to keep around if you own a DVD/Bluray player, CD player radio/boombox, PC disc drive, PS3/Xbox 360, and such. There are still very good reasons to actually keep certain DVDs, but the incentive to buy them over Bluray is becoming lower day by day. This is especially prophetic with standard definition releases on Bluray. Bluray is kind of becoming obsolete but they still have big incentives for people to buy them which are mentioned in the video.

@lemons2300
@lemons2300 3 года назад
@@fanofananimal4420 Formats become obsolete when companies stop producing them and when consumers drift away from it. They're tangible consumer things like any other. Upgrading means you care about better experience with better technology. Bluray support 1080p and are optimized for FHD(1080p) TVs, while DVDs are optimized for interlaced tube SDTVs (although back in the days, people preferred watching on EDTVs and HDTVs because it's newer and supposedly better). For audio, DVD support 24-bit/96KHz and 5.1ch, while Bluray support 24-bit/192KHz and 7.1ch. Bluray is on the verge of becoming replaced by streaming as well as 4K UHD Bluray. Audio CD to streaming is not necessarily an upgrade. It's technically a downgrade as with Spotify and RU-vid. Unless the streaming service offers perfect CD quality audio or better. Whether it matters or not depends on your ears. CD/DVD ROMs for PC applications are practically obsolete as most people now have access to fast broadband Internet. Bluray isn't really a significant upgrade for SD content (such as the old TV shows). Bluray is optimized for HD content especially 1080p, at 16:9 aspect ratio. 4:3 content appears normally on a modern 16:9 screen with a possibility of offering slight picture improvement over DVDs (my guess is that SD content on Bluray is likely pre-deinterlaced professionally, but they didn't see the incentive to spend the extra mile to upscale the show into HD), but on a 4:3 TV it might become bordered by black bars on all four sides due to a possible lack of 4:3 support (I could be wrong), in addition to possibly no closed captions support (I could be wrong). Bluray also has larger storage size though this hardly matters nowadays. Contrary to popular belief, DVD is optimized for 4:3 aspect ratio (content such as pre-HD TV shows). Anamorphic widescreen mode means stretching out the picture into 16:9 from the native 4:3 DVD source to produce the intended viewing state. This can take a toll on the picture quality, although for the average consumer the difference would be completely unnoticeable/ignorable. Movies are usually widescreen and so normally uses anamorphic widescreen on DVDs. Because DVDs are optimized for tube SDTVs, I would say DVDs are best for SD content such as TV shows, music videos, and cartoons from the late 20th century or the early 2000s. Most of those forms of media had never seen releases with genuine HD transfers (such as commonly with hollywood movies)--only remaster releases which are professionally upscaled from the SD source. Based on personal experience, I've only encountered anime with HD releases, most of them likely archived on film (shaky with occasional dust) rather than digitally (looks to be 100% digital animation with no shaking or dust).

@@lemons2300 I get what your saying but the think is for me that me and my family never really upgrade technology unless we have to, because for our use its more beneficial as we are just the average viewer (or average listener) . My street just seems to be in the old fashion my neighbour had to get me to get him more cds for his car so rellay there is a small community that find them useful. @lemons2300

@@fanofananimal4420 The general consumer generally value convenience over quality. And of course price is also a factor. Subscribing to netflix or hulu will be cheaper than buying DVDs/Blurays every month while also being more convenient. Downside is you don't own any video files when you use streaming service. So when the license to a movie/show isn 't renewed, that movie/show would be taken away from the service and you can't ever watch/rewatch it again. Same goes for music streaming. It's convenient for listening to music on the go, but the audio quality might not be as good and they could take your favorite songs away from the platform. Yes, I was talking about CRT TVs. AFAIK CRT TVs are the only TVs (I think) that can natively display in interlaced, which makes CRT SDTVs the true SDTVs. LCDs display everything progressively because that's just how the display works. CRTs can also display progressive, such as with computer monitors or EDTVs/HDTVs.

@Outfrost 8 лет назад
Jordan Johnson Then why do you bother replying to my comment that carries a mostly unrelated point? Okay, here we go... 1. If people don't watch it at all, what's the point of it being there in the first place? 2. They have usually made shorter sponsor spots so far, even on WAN Show there were some shorter ones. I haven't noticed a difference in video quality that would be based on ad length. 3. Shorter sponsor spots are less boring and tend to get more views for this exact reason. Therefore, money argument is kind of invalid. 4. If people cut out from the video at the beginning of or even half-way through the sponsor spot, they don't get to the outro, where they're reminded to subscribe and check out their other content. If noone sees/hears those reminders, what's the point of them existing? 5. And last but not least - yes, it is minimal effort for me to skip the sponsor spot. That is not the point. I use AdBlock. The point is to discuss the format of the ads I actually support. Get it now? It would've been less of an effort to watch the 1.5-minute-long sponsor integration than to reply to your comments...
@jordanjohnson714
@jordanjohnson714 8 лет назад
***** 1. The point is so they can get paid by the sponsors. The sponsors want to get as much attention as possible, and they will pay people to give them attention. That's the entire point of the sponsor being in the video. 2. The point isn't how long the sponsor is. The point is that it's there in the first place, and that it's at the end. I didn't say it would be less quality if it was shorter. I was saying it would be less quality if videos didn't have sponsors for a while. It should not matter to you how long the sponsors are because you don't have to watch them. 3. My argument wasn't that longer sponsors give more money. My argument was that without the sponsor, they wouldn't get money from them. Read my original comment, and you'll find there's no trace of me saying longer sponsors mean more money. 4. Good point. But think about it. What's better, that reminder or a sponsor? What will give them more money? There's your answer. And shortening the sponsor won't help much. Whether the sponsor is 10 seconds long or 2 hours long, I'm going to go away from the video before it ends either way. 5. I use AdBlock too. If you don't want to support LTT then don't watch their videos. If you don't like the ad format don't watch the ads. It's that simple. Get it now? Yes, it would have been less effort to watch the sponsors. But hey, arguing with people on the internet is fun. That's why I do it!

This might be a dumb question because I don't know much about tech but why can't use UV lasers?

Was it really necessary to dedicate 1/4 of the video length to an ad?

Note that the DVD standard allows for data to be encoded on as many as 4 layers per disk. A DVD *could* hold a full 1080p movie....but the DVD format had been hacked. How to read a DVD is now public knowledge. I imagine that figured into the decision to look for something whose format details are proprietary. :)

I have a feeling i miss out on a lot of content from LMG, as they don't show up in my "new uploads by subscribers" list. Are their videos kept hidden for a while after upload, so they end up being released in between other content I've already watched?

I want a physical format with non compression of video. Lossless audio and video, 4k+ resolution, and high frame rate would be awesome. H.265 codec might be good for future streaming but let's do away with compressing physical.

Yes. The 1080p Blu-ray offers better picture quality, sound quality, and immersion than a standard DVD. Not to mention the fact that 1080p Blu-ray discs can take up to 50GB of space compared to just the standard 4.7GB on a standard DVD, which provides much more room for higher quality and a more detailed and accurate video. Overall, the 1080p Blu-ray is the superior option when compared to the standard DVD.

If blue lasers are used for their shorter wavelengths, why are there not violet, or even ultraviolet lasers? Why settle for blue?

Is data caps a us-only thing? Because i've never seen them in my country, nor Heard of them anywhere, except the US and maybe Canada.

The main advantage of the physical formats have over the streaming is that once you bought your movie, it is yours, and you can watch it as many times as you want, and store it for watch it in the future whenever you want, meanwhile if the streaming service administrator suddenly decides to remove that movie from his site, you won't be able to watch your favorite movie anymore, even when you have been paid for the service during ten years.

What is going on with the audio-quality lately? There is a constant hum/noise in the background and its quite distracting. Might be over-compressed audio raising the background noise.

what kind of bandwidth does 4k streaming require? I have 50/6mb with no cap.

It's just a giant touchscreen. But instead of screen underneath it, it has it projected onto it.
