Blue Chips is Wildly Underrated

(I noticed that I spelled "Dakich" incorrectly. Whooooooops.)
On February 18th, 1994, just a few weeks before the NCAA Tournament, Paramount Pictures released a somewhat legendary movie called Blue Chips. It melded the tradition and passion for basketball in the state of Indiana, the excitement of discovering the next great players, and the sizzle of the forbidden, in the form of scandal.

No mention of Bob Cousy, who actually did such a good job as the AD I actually thought he was just some actor when I first saw this movie. The free throw shooting scene is the type of golden material that happens when you shoot professionals doing what they do rather than actors pretending to do it.

The first time I ever heard of this movie was when a teacher told us the high school were gonna go to next next year had the gym where “Blue chips” was filmed, I didn’t pay him any mind until I saw the inside my self, it got me intrigued about the movie and I watched it which then got me to this video, I’m exited for next year.

Matt Nover played for Bellinzona in Switzerland for a year after the release of this film. The crazy thing is that I loved that film, and I played for Bellinzona in those years, and I didn't know he was there. Obviously I was in the youth team, 14 years old, but it's still absurd that I didn't know. I just discovered it on Wikipedia..

I agree...this movie does not rise to the level of, let's say Hoosiers, but it was enjoyable when it came out. I remember some of the cameo's made me feel a little uncomfortable. I haven't watched this movie in many years and it would be interesting to see if it still holds weight. I might watch it again.

I was actually there for the shooting of this movie in Frankfort Indiana. I grew up in Central Indiana so therefore I'm a Hoosier and if you know anything about a Hoosier, it's the fact we love basketball. I don't know who got the bright idea of filming in Frankfort Indiana but as a 10 year old kid who admired watching Shaq in the NBA, THIS WAS HUGE. We went to a Marsh Supermarket who was handing out tickets and we're told to wear a yellow shirt. Then we went to the filming and sat in our seats while they were filming. They told us when to cheer and stuff like that. It was pretty boring but I got to see Shaq in Frankfort Indiana and that was awesome.

I was so-so on HFB. You like it?
@boquintana9668
@boquintana9668 4 года назад
Absolutely adore it. There's a great essay by a scholar named Gerald Sims called "Race and the Cinematic Machine" that details how black people have been "shadowed" in film due to artificial limitations of the medium, and how that shadowing carried over into the digital age despite the lack of a technological limitation. Because HFB was filmed on an iPhone, the opposite occurs: the black characters of the movie are displayed in stronger visual light than the white people. The best example is the "you're sitting in my seat" scene: Zachary Quinto's face is so murky and shrouded, whereas Andre Holland's face is crystal clear and hella imposing. So, it's like a double movie: on one side you have Tarell Alvin McCraney's BEAUTIFUL screenplay about revolutionizing basketball and breaking the sport's historical chains of black exploitation. On the other side you have Steven Soderbergh's instructional guide on how to revolutionize the film industry via microbudget iPhone movies like HFB: marginalized communities finally have the technology to tell THEIR story, along with achievable highways to widespread distribution and visibility. I know that it looks grimy and is edited a little too much like an art movie, but I think it's a really bold and profound statement as well as a HIGHLY entertaining business movie. It's my third favorite film of the year and favorite basketball movie of all time.
