Follow-up, finally had some success. I was trying to fill a small missing chunk of a 2-stroke aluminum engine case and I just couldnt get it hot enough with a propane torch. Decided to give it another go and set the case on the turkey fryer burner until it was about 700F. Added some additional heat to the area of interest with the torch and then was able to tin and fill the hole. Other than the heating challenges, I actually prefer this to any sort of welding. Hope someone else can use this tip.

Thanks for the video. I've used these in the past to create a snorkel for my H1. Used the OEM flange with a 4" aluminum pipe and brazed it together with these rods. Something else I like about them is how easily you can shape it after it cools by sanding or grinding on it, truly great product!

I bought these to repair stress cracks in the bow of my 1/8" boat hull. I was considering oxy acetylene but it looks like a simple propane torch works. There is a lot of aluminum to dissipate the heat so I will see if propane can do it.

Great info. Let's say you have two sheets of aluminum sheet you want to bond together. One is a rectangular base plate, and one is a rectangular perimeter to that base plate, to give it an offset piece of decorative trim. From your last technique that seems entirely possible, but what is the risk to the bond to then clean up the joints with a grinder/dremel. Again, this would be decorative, say, a car console top plate.
@bluedemonweld
@bluedemonweld 2 года назад
as you don't heat up the bond beyond 750 deg while grinding it should be totally fine.

After 40 years of soldering, I bought some aluminum brazing rods that melts at 720ºF, and tried it with my propane plumbing torch. No problems brazing two 1/16" angle aluminum test pieces, edge to edge to form a square tube. Tried it with 1/4" thick aluminum angles to do the same test, and I couldn't do it. The aluminum never got hot enough. Isolated the part from vise with steel dowel pins, and still no go after 5 minutes of heating. This test was done on 2" test pieces. Imagine if each were 2 feet long? Went to looking for an alternative and found your video. Your brazing rod was interesting to me since it melts at under 400ºF, strangely there was no tensile strength numbers anywhere on the product page! Question; If it's stronger than the base aluminum, how come everyone says that aluminum weld with a TIG or MIG welder is stronger than brazing? Since one can only TIG / MIG weld the edges of two parts, I would've thought brazing would wick under the part and produce a much bigger brazed area, than just the edges! I want to build an incumbent bike chassis from standard aluminum extrusions, but don't want to use nuts and bolts, rivets, and don't have the welding equipment or skills to do aluminum welding. Would brazing with your rods produce connections as strong as using nuts and bolts or welding?

you can drill and tap it, yes. the process shown in the video is just more efficient in my opinion.
@robertclymer6948
@robertclymer6948 2 года назад
Of course you can drill and tap after the hole cools, or before it sets up in the hole, put your bolt down in the hole and rotate if a couple of time to make the threads. I prefer drill and tap personally.

Can I bond some aluminum togethet with this and then have it powder coated after? I'm told by the powder coater that their ovens reach 400 degrees celsius.
@bluedemonweld
@bluedemonweld 2 года назад
honestly never tried powder coating after. did you mean anodized? triple play is an aluminum zinc alloy and might respond differently to the base metals in post weld treatments. it will maintain its solidity as long as you don't reach 732 deg F

no.. propane works. remember you are heating the base metal to 735 deg F, NOT the rod!!! if you torch the rod it will burn and not melt. be patient with the propane.

@bluedemonweld
@bluedemonweld 11 месяцев назад
hahaha! not the first time i've heard this. gotta get that base metal over 740 deg F and keep it there. alum dissipates heat so fast you have to keep at it. use a temp gage or temp stick to make sure you are at temp before you paint in the product. can be tricky but once you figure it out its easy peasy!

Dude you really might want to think about doing some serious strength tests with that stuff before actually using it on mechanical Tools and parts That are very important When somebody's life is on the line. That cheap aluminium brazing rod is not meant for carburetors Or equipment or parts of that type regardless of what their scam infomercials say. I've seen serious strength tests done with this product on RU-vid Before I did my own just to test Other people's Outcomes. It is strong but it is not stronger than the parent middle number 1 number 2 it is not penetrating the metal like tig welding or Mig welding . It's half ass soldering aluminium that's all it is. But it's cheap so cheap people buy cheap shit which is why the saying goes you get what you pay for. There are better aluminium brazing rods that have actually flux in the rod that uses a higher temp before the aluminium brazing rod starts to flow which is how it should be when it comes to soft metals such as aluminium. That way you have an actual chance of Maybe some sort of actual penetration and bonding of the 2 separate metals flowing into one. Not Soft cheap aluminium And a pencil lead rod shape That Pools up and sits on top of the parent Metal And does not penetrate. This is not welding it's barely brazing
@bluedemonweld

correct, it is a brazed joint and not a weld
