Aug. 11 (Bloomberg) -- The historic blue moon diamond was found in the Cullinan mine in South Africa -- where 65% of the world's diamond production is sourced. The blue moon was cut down from around 30 carats to 12 by diamond-maker Cora International. Cora International Chief Executive Officer Suzette Gomes explains the process to Bloomberg's Alix Steel.

Just to think there are millions, if not billions, of higher quality gems still in the earth somewhere waiting to be found

For those who saying diamonds are a farce; I agree that the market is only there if the hype is there. But consider this, this useless market provides jobs all around the world. And while diamonds aren't rare, high quality gem diamonds are. Naturally occuring, colored, large diamonds like this are insanely rare
@undefinablereasoning
@undefinablereasoning 9 лет назад
+Jordy The irony is that "high quality gem" diamonds are more common than sapphire or rubies. Most definitely more common than emeralds. The price is fixed.. they are a much cheaper stone than those big 3. There are plenty of diamonds in the world much like the one this lady is holding... however only a certain number of them are appraised and that is where the value is.. The appraisal. You can buy a stone like this for $20 in an African country if you have a good eye for such things.
@jordy4761
@jordy4761 9 лет назад
+undefinablereasoning you have a fundamental misunderstanding of how colored/colorless diamonds as well as sapphires and rubies form, where they're found and how they're graded. A diamond like this isn't an easily found anywhere, even in diamond producing areas. Look at the Argyle mine in Australia and you may figure out just how rare a stone like this is
@undefinablereasoning
@undefinablereasoning 9 лет назад
Jordy Don't presume. This stone is RARE, but not more RARE than a deep royal blue sapphire of the same carats. Certainly not more rare than a VSS2 Columbian emerald of the same carats. Putting it in this price range is a farce. It's rare for a diamond.. but diamonds aren't all that rare to begin with. 2 million USD for this stone would be generous.
@jordy4761
@jordy4761 9 лет назад
+undefinablereasoning And Tanzanite is rarer than all of them but cheaper, under your logic it should be more expensive but it simply isn't. Any market is about supply and demand, and supply for a diamond like this is absolutely minimal - it's a rare find. The grading scale helps to define the purity of the diamond's chemistry as color is affected by impurities and other factors. This helps to define how rare the stone actually is. Don't forget that not all diamonds become jewelry, many aren't good enough and become industrial material. You really need to learn more about diamonds and colored stones in general
@undefinablereasoning
@undefinablereasoning 9 лет назад
Jordy I nearly went to New York to get my GIA certificate. I know what I'm talking about.. What you may not be aware of, is that not only are industrial diamonds more common but so are the gem quality diamonds. Diamonds are so hard they rarely get cracked/chipped which makes it very easy to find a large rough stone. As far as Tanzanite is concerned.. it's not one of the biblical stones. Diamond isn't either.. but that's exactly what makes it a scam to begin with. Diamonds are only more expensive than Tanzanite because of this cartel which controls the import of Asian/African diamonds into North America. Heck, if you want rarity try finding a true IF natural emerald. Heck of a lot more rare than pretty much every other gemstone in the market. Due to emerald's inclination to fracture.

Any thing which is rare to find has a extreem high price. to get and find such a rare blue diamond in quality clarity & size is worth more than price.

We couldn't see it well enough. It would be great to see it in a setting. Better lights are needed to see on camera. Also on a turn table.

So what if i have two identical diamonds one lab grown and the other is natural, how could u tell the difference and if i replace a natural diamond with a grown lab one how could we prove otherwise?
@supercoolio120
@supercoolio120 8 лет назад
+Samer Houssein yes, as she said theres a difference. I think lab grown is more symmetric and you can tell by that.. Not sure though but Im sure there is a difference
@samerhoussein
@samerhoussein 8 лет назад
+supercoolio120 Actually I did some research after watching this video and no one can tell the difference even a professional jeweler who works with diamonds for 40 years, in other words diamonds have no value at this moment except for the manufacturing cost, as one can make diamonds out of peanut butter. On the other hand gold cannot be created to this moment which makes it more valuable than diamonds, as it is almost impossible to create gold as it requires very special circumstances and even if possible it would cost a fortune to produce little amount.
@ghost2coast296
@ghost2coast296 8 лет назад
+Samer Houssein You can test them with ultraviolet light, real diamonds glow while fake diamonds don't (or vis versa I can't remember). That is literally the only way to tell them apart, and since normal people don't spend their lives under UV lights, there really is no noticeable difference.
@samerhoussein
@samerhoussein 8 лет назад
u can only detect impurities in so called natural diamonds (which is actually not a good thing) but when it comes to characteristics both lab grown and natural diamonds are identical. 1- They share the same chemical and optical characteristics that no expert could tell the difference of. 2- They are eco friendly. 3- Conflict free (no horrible blood diamonds). 4- Much more affordable almost 50% less cost.

Addressing to the comments made for the "morons". Man made diamonds r not diamonds. And the rarity of the "Blue Moon" diamond. Is just that, rare! One of a kind.......look at all your facts. And what do u do to contibute to the environment and society?

1. Why allow it to be cut before you have it scientifically tested unless the testing is just part of the marketing of the diamond? 2. Am I the only one who thought it was more beautiful before it was cut? 3. I am assuming the fact that everyone here knows that the price of diamonds is kept artificially high by the industry.
@tigerwa
@tigerwa 8 лет назад
The way it is faceted effects the saturation of the colour, the uncut stone contained numerous inclusions and the stone was cut into a shape the gets rid of them. It now needs to be tested to get its colour and clarity graded. The difference in price between a internally flawless diamond and a very slightly included diamond is around 1/3 so it is very important in terms of its value.
