Here's my take on Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart's 'Blue Moon', recorded live at the Grand Chameleon. / grandchameleon
'Blue Moon' was written in 1934. In fact, the tune was originally written in 1933, but with different lyrics, and was going to be used for the film 'Hollywood Party' under the title 'Prayer (Oh Lord, make me a movie star)'. However, the song didn't end up being recorded for the film, so the lyrics were rewritten to be used for the 1934 film 'Manhattan Melodrama' as 'It's Just That Kind of Play'; this time, it was recorded, but was cut before release, with a third version of the lyrics ('The Bad in Every Man') being used in the film instead.
To improve its chances as a commercially successful song, in late 1934, the lyrics were rewritten one last time, and (finally!) 'Blue Moon' was born. It has been recorded by many artists, including Connee Boswell, Billy Eckstine, Mel Tormé, Frank Sinatra, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Dean Martin, Julie London, and even The Marcels, Bob Dylan, and Elvis Presley. I hope you enjoy it!
