Blue Yeti Sound Test and six tips for getting the best sound out of your Blue Yeti Microphone! The Blue Yeti is a USB condenser mic that's very popular for podcasters and RU-vidrs. This video (and the past 800 videos or so on my channel) showcase a sound test example of what the Blue Yeti mic can sound like when set up with good conditions. The Blue Yeti is plug and play with Windows and MacOS so when I say setup, I mean physically setting things up right!
Check out the latests price, reviews and details on the Blue Yeti at Amazon here: amzn.to/39eGDi8
Audio-Technica ATR 2100 (Dynamic USB mic alternative): amzn.to/2HyV9FX
My Boom Stand that I use with my Blue Yeti: amzn.to/2uAL8zf

Blue Yeti-specific Shock Mount: amzn.to/2gQgnhi
I was not sponsored by or paid by Blue for this video- I purchased my Blue Yeti microphone with my own money back in 2013 and I've used it ever since.
To set up your Blue Yeti microphone to sound clear and smooth, here are the six steps I recommend. Step 1: Turn the Gain down or almost all the way down. This should reduce echo and peaking for a stable audio signal. If you need to turn it way down (until it's too quiet) to eliminate background noise, you can compensate by raising the input gain in your computer.
Step 2: Set it to Cardioid. The Blue Yeti has four modes and you can read on their website what they all do, but if you're recording one voice into it you'll want it to be in Cardioid mode. It looks like a little heart/butt/Pacman.
Step 3: Speak into the front of it! Directly above the Blue logo. Not the end of it.
Step 4: Get it off your desk! A boom stand or clamp arm with a shock mount will go a long way towards cleaning up your microphone sound from the Blue Yeti. I've put some Amazon links of examples further up in the description. The Blue Yeti has a standard issue mic threading and will fit most stands and accessories. It's a heavy bird though so don't cheap out on an arm stand!
Step 5: Don't forget the pop filter. They're cheap, they're set-and-forget, they make you look like you know what you're doing and they'll improve your sound quality while extending the potential lifespan of your Blue Yeti microphone.
Step 6: Post Processing. I use the free software Audacity, but you can also touch up your audio in many video editing software kits. Look up tutorials and see what effects you like. I use Bass and Treble boost, Compressor and Normalizer to keep my audio recordings around the same volume level for RU-vid. I know the 'before/after' example in the video isn't jaw dropping, but the difference gets more dramatic if your initial recording has background noise to remove.

I have recieved my blue yeti today and am hoping to mae a start on doing an anime vocal cover channel and big the big anime cover singer for the UK, but idk which programs are going to be the best ones to start on that I can still implement all the vocal effects that all finalised sings have such as the echo like effect or the voice sounding eletric or compressed. What one do you recomend me that I can still easily learn on and that isn''t too complex?

As an audio engineer, I can say that all of these tips are spot on except one big tip that was completely wrong: Gain. So with gain, you have to understand that the Blue Yeti is a USB mic, meaning that turning the gain down increases the susceptibility to EMF, which sounds like a light hiss. Instead, I recommend turning up the gain to about 75% (not to max because you will peak and that also sounds bad), then turn down the mix volume in Windows. I have my volume in Windows set to about 60, but this may vary depending on your voice volume. Think about it this way: Any time you use audio, you want to get the best quality source audio as possible. If you are recording your voice, this means you want to get the best voice source. Turning the gain down reduces the signal strength, and thus the quality, of your source. If you notice a light hiss in your audio that you have to clean up with software, your gain is too low. The result is that I have to do almost no post-processing cleanup. I don't know where this "low gain" myth got started, but it makes the average person's mic quality much poorer, especially if they are using the mic to live stream where post-processing isn't an option.

Thank you very much for this. I kind of wondered about it. I used to keep it on low and people complained about the low volume. I put the gain up and have my windows volume just as you said. I still get complaints that the sound is not clear. How close to the mic should I be? I have one of the foams that goes over the Yeti and today I ordered shock mount because i keep it on an extended arm. I use it for video recording so it would be a nightmare separating video and sound to fix the sound. Thanks in advance.

I've always wondered, wouldn't doing this introduce clipping? My thoughts are that because your mic is a higher volume than windows, the mic picks up a loud sound, it clips because the gain is high, it goes into windows and gets turned down again, but that clipping is still there... is this accurate at all? I drew this conclusion when I accidentally had it at extremes of this (as in SUPER high mic gain, but very low windows gain) and noticed distortion even though it was quite a distance away from clipping.

Have been using my blue yeti mic for about 6-7 months now and love it! Picked it up used for $40 CAD and haven't looked back. One issue I struggled with early was an audible hissing noise that can be fixed by turning your mic gain up and reducing the device volume through the Windows sound controls. Great vid and very helpful!!

I do a lot of recording with the blue yeti and my biggest tip is to actually have your gain up to near max (just keep turning it up until you reach any sort of negative tonal qualities or clipping, then dial it back to just before that point) and then changing your windows input volume to about 10-20% range. This changes everything- you'll truly be surprised at how much this helps your overall sound, volume, etc.

I always get weirded out by hearing my own voice on playback. Do you ever get over that?
@Hazelnuttygames
@Hazelnuttygames 7 лет назад
You do! When you hear your own voice normally, it's modified by vibrations through your body. A microphone will show you your voice as other people hear it, which typically you aren't used to. People tend to prefer things that they're exposed to a lot, so that's very natural. After a couple of weeks of working with clips of your own voice every day you'll get way more comfortable with it!
@Playingwith3D
@Playingwith3D 7 лет назад
I suspected you would finally get use to it. I am only use to occasionally talking awkwardly at some friends wedding caught on video, and when I see and hear myself I'm thinking "omg I sound like that to others? I'm never talking again". lol
@cujoedaman
@cujoedaman 7 лет назад
Playingwith3D, one trick you can do is to hold two large pieces of paper or file folders on each side of your head in front of your ears. What this does is causes the sound of your voice to bounce around before it reaches your ears giving you a much better idea of what you sound like to others. This way you can kind of self analyze your voice and you can figure out what you don't like about it and change it. I notice on videos I tend to talk "through my nose" and so I try to talk from my diaphragm, the same way with singers, they sing from their diaphragm and not the throat. It takes practice because you're used to talking a certain way, but when you become conscience about it, you can stop and say "hey, I sound better if I do this". I've been able to recognize when I'm talking that way and change the way I release my voice. It's not a perfect solution, but it does help :D

For those looking at this in 2021+ You've got to check out DaVinci Resolve (free, and used by big name studios like Marvel). It has an easy right-click auto-sync by waveform in the Edit app. I can't speak for how it compares to FCP, but it's miles ahead of Adobe Premiere in ease of use (and, again, free).

Late reply, but I think he was asking if you can use it as just a normal mic while you still have the headset plugged in. This is because there are technically two mics connected - The headset microphone and the Blue Yeti. Since I'm already here though I think I might as well tell ya the answer. Yes, you can only record with the Yeti because the Yeti is a USB mic so it records in a separate channel than your headset. You just have to change the settings for recording on your PC.

silvinodino people who choose a slower speaking speed aren't just "dumb". Kind of rude of you. Also, not a single person said she sounded dumb.

Great video, thanks! +1 on the post-processing in audacity. The first time I tried this I went from me-in-my-garden-shed sound to I-now-command-the-airwaves sound. Essential step.
