Yeah wrote the first part and then copied and pasted that. I went kind of fast with the sticking though. I will fix it sometime soon.

Sounds like you need to relax your arm and think more about squeezing at the fulcrum and utilizing constant wrist rotation rather than relying on the downforce from your arm to get the rolls out on the cheeses. Think about your hand being dynamic in pressure rather than static. It's not arm motion for the rolls with an exercise like this.

Pretty sure metronomes are banned in lots, so this was his compromise, he still seems to do it today. However when they are allowed he uses it.

If you look at the stickings the basses have, it looks like more of a double/triple beat exercise for them.
