Wow! Imagine, you’re trying to pick up a great vocal on the other side next to the bass man, but there are five tremendous banjo pickers in attack mode all around you. What to do when such fine picking dominates the vocal? Not a big deal; happens all the time. It’s the beauty of an open Jam, not a rehearsed ensemble. Each picker at the Jam comes to put the days issues aside and have fun. It’s not unusual to record thirty songs and delete fifteen to get better quality audio. Tonight’s Jam was such an example. There were more great tunes, some of which I had never recorded, but because I happened to be in a spot where the audio was dominated by another instrument, I felt it would compromise the sound quality of the video to include the tune.
There is a picker, Jack Lewis (banjo) whose musical wisdom gives him a unique ability to support other performers by adjusting his technique and dynamics. Jack and fellow picker, Cody Nieves (guitar), open the video with their rendition of Nashville Blues.
The Jam meets every Friday evening at 6:30 in the parking lot behind the Pizza Hut at 15840 West Colonial Dr., Ocoee, Florida 34761.
