BLUEGRASS IN A RACE WITH NATURE! IS IT PRECIPITATION OR PICKING? THAT IS THE QUESTION. (720p-HD)
While, this video is was cut short by the showers of a Winter front, we were fortunate to be joined by several new pickers including Dr. Natalie Hall, a new fiddler from Nashville. Natalie says her New Year’s resolution is to play more bluegrass. It was also a great pleasure to have founder, Jack Lewis, back among the other core pickers.
Jam sessions are for players to interact with other players and make music in a freewheeling environment, without having to be concerned about performing for an audience. Some jams are impromptu, one-time occurrences, while others are weekly events that may happen in a private setting or in a public venue. Jams may focus on a particular style of music or even a particular instrument, and every jam has its own culture and etiquette.
As you watch THE OCOEE JAM, keep in mind this is an OPEN jam. It is not a rehearsed performance. Each picker, in turn, chooses a tune, and he or she sings or plays it accompanied by all the other pickers. Everyone gets a chance no matter the skill level. It seemed that this Jam was composed mostly of experienced pickers. The Jam meets every Friday evening at 6:30 in the parking lot behind the Pizza Hut at 10870 West Colonial Dr., Ocoee, Florida 34761.

FEATURED COVER: One of the highlights of the video, in my opinion, comes at 11:13 with a walk-up vocalist whose name I regrettably missed. The vocal was a cover of a 1942 song by J.B. Coates: I find the lyrics touching and heartfelt. The mandolin accompaniment (Johnny Adams) with Bill Miller's lilting bass 2-beat, and Dr. Natalie Hall's understated fiddle, along with Gerald Creed's soft rolling harmony, combined with a poignant lyric, make this one of my favorites of the night. The Sweetest Gift J.B. Coates 1942 One day a mother came to a prison To see a precious but erring son. She told the warden how much she loved him It did not matter what he had done. She did not bring to him parole or pardon She brought no silver, no pomp nor style It was a halo sent down from Heaven The sweetest gift a mother’s smile. Her boy had wandered far from the fireside Though she had pleaded with him each night But not a word did she ever utter That told her heartache her smile was bright She did not bring to him parole or pardon She brought no silver, no pomp nor style It was a halo sent down from Heaven The sweetest gift a mother’s smile. .............bridge............ She left a smile that you can remember She’s gone to Heaven from heartaches free. Them bars around you will never change her He was her baby and ere will be. She did not bring to him parole or pardon She brought no silver, no pomp nor style It was a halo sent down from Heaven The sweetest gift a mother's smile.

You are right, vivatones66! That is a very impressive part of your wonderful video. Thank you for the lyrics and the background information. Bye the way: Dr Hall's way of playing the fiddle is absolutely excellent! Hope she enjoyed it so much that she will take part more often! All the best to you!

Ironically Dr. Hall's New Year's resolution for 2017 is to play more Bluegrass. I told her I hope she keeps it here at the Parking Lot. Thanks for your observation. Stay well.

The song she sang before that was great too, and before that the rendition of Soldier's Joy was one of the best I've heard. What a talent the violinist has!

Vivatones, Thanks, again and again. I've watched, recorded and thrilled for years, but don't comment much. I should. The unrehearsed Jams are an art form of themselves, and to capture any with the feelings and emotions actually involved is an extremely valuable talent. Recordings have already sent some of our "Tar Heels" on their way to Glory Land with smiles. Old Chief Lynn

Thoughtful, interesting comments, as usual, Jeff. Thank you. I need to get a ticket to the UK to escape this deep freeze. Probably a good time to send the beast to Nikon for a bit of service to remove the parking lot tar. Keep in touch.
