BLUEGRASS CORE 720P-HD | PICKERS FORM A MUSICAL BOND.
Everything you read here is solely the opinion of the videographer and in no way represents any participant of the Ocoee Parking Lot Bluegrass Jam. I (the videographer) am just another lover of bluegrass music and attend the Jam as any other spectator, the only difference being I look through the lens of the camera. So, if I opine in any way about the music, it is just that, a humble, unqualified opinion. You may choose to agree or disagree. I’m merely a story teller with a camera.
As you watch, keep in mind this is an OPEN JAM. It is not a rehearsed performance. Each picker, in turn, chooses a tune, and he or she sings or plays it accompanied by all the other pickers. Everyone gets a chance no matter the skill level. It seemed that this Jam was composed mostly of experienced pickers. The Jam meets every Friday evening at 6:30 in the parking lot behind the Pizza Hut at 15840 West Colonial Dr., Ocoee, Florida 34761.
Tonight’s Jam is absent several excellent pickers from last week. The good news, however, is the musical burden is aptly carried by a smaller group of pickers who have been the core of the Jam for many years. They are accustomed to playing together and are a fairly close group.
PICKERS:
Jack Lewis - banjo, vocals. Jack is a retired Orlando Utilities Company employee. Back in the day, he was a U.S. Army Airborne paratrooper.
Gerald Creed - guitar, vocals. Gerald is a retired commercial bakery maintenance worker.
Johnny Adams - mandolin, guitar, vocals. Johnny is a retired aerospace defense employee. He crafts mandolins. Check out the ones he and Doug Buchheister are playing.
Bill Miller - upright acoustic bass, vocals. Bill is a land surveyor.
Doug Buchheister - mandolin, vocals. Doug teaches in the Orange County Public School System.
Phil Gregory -- guitar, vocals. Retired professional.
James Vickers - banjo, guitar, mandolin, vocals. James is a professional musician.
Fred Burky - Fiddle. Fred is a retired national corporate restaurant executive.
Denise - ribbed crow sounder. Retired U.S. Army Airborne.
Adam - guitar. Sales & marketing entrepeneur.

Hi George, I was blessed with a visit by friends from Kentucky last week. The husband is in his 80s and still actively working his large farm from dawn to dusk. He's in great health, which is the key. Thanks so much for touching base and sharing your experience. Glad you liked the "oldies."

Whoa! Will Ian, I was a music major in college and worked on the university farm to pay my way. I plowed fields, cleaned fence rows, and threw bales of hay, took care of the dairy cows, etc. If I hadn't done that 51 years ago, I could never have afforded my video camera :) Glad you enjoyed the jam.

Great to hear you've done farm work! I practically grew up on a farm in south-west Wales: picking potatoes, stacking straw bales, fixing fences, shearing sheep, building silage clamps, driving tractors, the lot! I still miss it in some ways, but mainly only in summer. :)
@vivatones66
@vivatones66 8 лет назад
I used to get a little light headed spreading the silage out in the top of the silo. Lots of fun back then. Have a great week.

No ill intent meant Ol Mate i was trying to imagine the occupations of some of the pickers if you remember my original question. Much to my surprise there were no farmers among the information you posted about the pickers. I wasn't "having a go " or teasing in any way, your video posts are my favourites and i watch them all the time and look forward to the next. Will Ian

I was wondering, where did the "ribbed crow sounder" originate. Never heard of or saw one before.. cool instrument...
@vivatones66
@vivatones66 8 лет назад
Hello, George, I refer you to Page 16 of "Knight's Revision of Hornbostel-Sachs" www.oberlin.edu/faculty/rknight/Organology/KnightRev2015.pdf It traces the origin of the Crown Sounder to America and classifies it generally as an Idiophones. Idiophones are instruments whose body itself, or some part of it, makes the sound. If not played with a keen awareness, it can become a distraction. Played tastefully with proper dynamics it can punctuate rhythm in a way that is more felt than heard.
@1244taylor

tks. there is a "lot" of reading there.. lol..so will be content with page 16 only..tks again

You are welcome; I never know there was so much to know about such an obscure instrument. Keep looking up.

Those were really good times. I wonder if any of the pickers can imitate a train whistle. Great post, thanks!
