Excellent presentation which does its job admirably. Brings the BMFA bang up to date with this communication. Well done. Let's hope this is the start of bringing the rest of the organisation to the same standard. Love the animations and tips.

That is a great video and I am glad we have it finally. Everything was explained very clearly - thanks to all. Great picture in picture of the SIM. A great choice of Pilot and nice flying. Very helpful to see the height and speed of the manoeuvres. Higher than I imagined and a good bit faster than I expected. I am glad the commentary said it is OK to allow the heli to speed up and slow down a bit. I struggle with that while practicing. I thought the Range check would be with the model on the ground, as we do with planes. I didn't see any explicit use of the Throttle Hold switch when the heli is powered up but being carried, or on the ground not at the takeoff point. I always do that for safety in case I bump the throttle stick. Cheers

Excellent video, though I thought the flying element was filmed from too far away, but still an excellent demo.

It's a tough one, film close up and people don't get a sense of where and how the helicopter is moving in relation to the ground.

There is a very good reason that filming at a distance where the camera didn't have to move when the maneuvers were flown as it gives a much better perspective on where the aircraft is in relation to the pilot than if you zoom in and have to pan to keep it in shot. For a guidance video such as this it is entirely the correct way.

The overall video and the mechanical checks were very good and really well presented.....but do you really expect the range check and (especially) fail safe check prior to every flight, including taking the blades off ! ? Plus it was stated to repeat the pre-flight checks after every flight! I dont think this is realistic. You are looking at at least 30 minutes of checks there, plus you would need a helper. No one does this in 'real life'. In fact I'd suggest that removing the blades that often certainly creates more risk by introducing real threat of incorrect assembly and wearing out of lock-nuts etc. Some helis use Loctite on the grip bolts which would need to be given hours to cure.. it's just not practical

If you watch the video, it clearly states 'if required' for the range check and failsafe check, nobody says it has to be done before every flight, but the video shows how you do it and remember you may be asked to demonstrate them as part of your test. So it needs to be shown and explained. Nobody would expect you to take 30 minutes to do these checks. In real life and regular flying, these checks can be done in under a minute, it's talking the examiner through them that takes the time, as well as presenting them for people to be able to listen and learn.

@@TinmanRC_Official thanks for the reply. After watching the video again I now do see the 'if required' in small writing in the pop up title, it's very easy to miss. It might have been clearer to actually state in the spoken introduction to the section that this is something that may be asked to be performed 'at examiner discretion'. Anyway, thanks for taking the time to do the video, I'll try to get around to doing the test one of these days, though no examiners for helis to be found where i am so not easy to arrange.

@@jetplaneflyer if you are struggling to find an examiner, do contact your local area BMFA (the main BMFA can put you in touch if necessary), as they will be able to help connect you with an examiner or an area chief examiner to help you take any test.

@@jetplaneflyer Also need to remember its not about showing what must be done every time, but about demonstrating you have the knowledge, like having to demonstrate a "turn in the road" (aka 3 point turn) in a driving test, you have to demonstrate you can do it and safely, even if in practice you might only find yourself doing it once every several months and in many of those the circumstance mean you wouldn't need to do all the mirror checks required as part of the manouver in the test

Ridiculous that the flying part of the test was filmed so far away!

@@BritishModelFlyingAssociation I agree. I know what the heli looks like flying, I wanted to see how far out it goes on each side, how height and slow speed is maintained (or not) over the whole flight. The big picture.
@Fromatic

close up and with an unknown zoom and pan, you'd have no sense of height or distance covered (Edit: or any sense of the speed, its not a helicopter review)

That's a shame, we see them quite regularly, they a great habit to get in to.

I do most of those airframe / wiring checks at home on the bench and only take to the field something I can fly. I check links again at the field in case something was knocked in the car. The power up and check full, free, correct movements before each flight.
