The downsides of the EOS M are ignored or glossed over by the ML fan boys. It should not be your "A" camera for video unless you are a hobbyist. Promoting the BMPCC as an alternative for micro budget and aspiring professionals is a great service. Love your channel!
Thank you David! I definitely agree and will pin this comment as it's direct and factual. Ml is fantastic and I doubt the devs ever intended it to be anything more than a 'bit of fun' but we have to admit there's still a few things that could get you in trouble using this as an A cam.
No way i would ever use the M with ML as an A Cam in a paid scenario. The bmpcc though i have used a ton and its very reliable once you do a bit of rigging.
@@jdsmedia , ML could make the codec better to rival the BMPCC if they really put an effort into it. The sensor is larger on the Canon EOS M so by default it should render better low-light results if software wasn't gimping it, right? Besides, the average watcher isn't stating "Wow! that's a great camera more so than they are praising the actual film". I see it from a average viewers level and at the end of the day, its the artist behind the lens that they are praising.
Whats the downsides? I've not noticed using the EOS M other than an occasional instance of low-light problems. From my experience, the cons of the EOS M are easily compensated and have pushed me to be creative/original more so than with my BMPCC. Maybe, you've had different experiences.
Hi Collin, really nice review watched it about 6 months ago and today just bought off eBay really clean bmpcc og with 12-55 Olympus lens, a gift at £206 including postage!!! Overjoyed and can’t wait for delivery!! Looked at canon eos with 15-45 lens and had a few clean ones offered for around £150 but noted what you said about its issues for pro work. Might get one eventually since I seen your m drone video, with canon eos m, that’s a really nice idea and I wonder as the drone can lift about 1.2kg’s could you mount the eos not under the drone somehow mounted on a zhiyun crance m2s in pov mode???? I’ve done some maths eos m with lens and zhiyun or the bmpcc og with Laowa 10mm lens and zhiyun are around 1000g. I’ve seen videos of the phantom 3 pro lifting about 1300g. Thanks for vid and help, keep it up!
Unless you want a smaller camera getting a eos M is useless, don’t fall for the hype. It’s the person behind the camera, not the camera itself. Put magic lantern on the 5D
Great content mate, i've been fiddling with the eos-m for a few months, getting into film making and live streaming. I cannot get a good preset that doesn't give me an issue like dropped frames or pink frames. I am also looking into the BMPCC and I cannot find anything for 400quid, more like 800-900bux on amazon etc... I will keep looking though and will happily grab a $500 camera if it will do 1080 raw without all that ugly focuspixel noisy bricks and overall terrible reliability. Don't get me wrong, the EOS-M has its moments, but its a crapshoot if I were to try doing any kind of real work with it. Thanks!
Thanks Mothy. Yes the EOS-M has it moments when it can let you down. Which build are you using? You might have better luck with older builds...it's been a long time since I had pink frames but I usually shoot in 1080 only. Since I made this video the prices have shot up on the bmmcc original but you'd have better luck checking Facebook marketplace and other selling site/apps rather than Amazon. Also you will definitely need external audio recorder for the original bmpcc. I switched to the BMMCC to get better preamp, full size hdmi and 60fps.
Make sure you are using a fast SD card, as in, write speeds. Read speeds are not important. Many EOS M users are complaining about this issue but they are using slow SD cards. Also, get a build with SD overclock. I didnt have pink frame issues and could record in higher bitrate and resolution when i switched over to a faster card. The Sandisk Extreme Pro 95MB/s is the fastest from my knowledge.
I feel ya... I had a blast learning on the M, but the problems just became too much to take and don't get me started on the file sizes... ;) I just upgraded to a used A6300 and find it quite liberating.
@@TheCruisinCrew geez, yeah, i am morally disgusted by sony so I avoid their products. But I guess I can have forgiveness in my heart for them at some point, the same way I forgive amazon every day for delivering fine products to my house.
Caveat...ok, I am laughing a bit. I would say jumping into the EOS-M is 70 percent caveat, that said, it's almost 4 months of part-time investigation, research, experimentation, obtaining accessory's, and pure will (exclamation "patience"). Within that caveat, the big picture, you have the MLV application and DaVinci Resolve 16 to work with. Bottom Line, a bunch of work...non-linear work. Steep learning curve. By 4 months, most of the frustration is gone and you produce above average results. My advice is have a few, clear goals, have a notebook, stay humble (many experienced video-people will have advice and information they will give you, if you stay ego-free), stay focused and the details will start making sense.
🤣🤣 yeah it was frustrating at first. I think I was a bit light on the issues and I think a lot of users/RU-vidrs don't talk about the issues enough. But yes, I agree with you.
Nice video 😀 I am using a Canon 50D with magic lantern and an external audio device. Would the Canon M be any better with the same magic lantern software as I really fancy a mirrorless camera but not necessarily changing for the sake of it/unnecessarily spending my hard earned. I was even thinking of a Canon 60D for video. All I do is publish 1080p videos to my utube channel and want to keep things as simple as possible but with quality results. Many thanks.
Hi Marc, first of blessings in the name of our saviour Jesus Christ 🙏🏾 Magic lantern on the m is the most developed out there and still lots happening with it. I checked out some of your videos and the quality looks really nice. I think the M would do well for you as you mostly have static shots. Most people want the m for it's filmic qualities so if you want rich colours with great texture I think it would do well for you....but ..that's only if you plan on grading. I noticed you're based in UK but not sure where but if you would like to do a test shoot I'd be happy to try it out with you as you spread messages about the kingdom. If not then I honestly I think your current videos are ok. You know the magic lantern workflow so really just depends if you to go from video look to film look. 🙏🏾
@@Altcine unfortunately but not unfortunately the camera that I used for these videos I uploaded I no longer have. It was a prosumer model I have now donated to my church as they only have a gopro camera for their services it has lots of manual control. I will have to look into the M camera but which model. I live in Keighley West Yorkshire UK and would love to link up with you.
@@Butterfly07949 that's very kind of you to donate your camera👍🏾. The m you need is the original m, the first version! So if you search for Canon Eos-M you should see quite a few on sale. As you know the magic lantern workflow is a little longer but you could always record 1080p h264 if the raw work flow turns out too long or your pc can't handle it but the 1080p raw is quite exceptional imo. Yes it has its flaws like aliasing but for static shots like yours you wouldn't have to worry. West Yorkshire is a bit of a trek 🤣 and I think the money wasted on travel would be better donated to get you the camera to continue doing God's work imo and I could always guide you via online chat. If you want to talk more you can message me on Instagram @imceuk. I love to support people who do kingdom work.
So I would say for a creative EOS M as you can take some photos as well. And you can use it standard in 1080. And raw. The bmpcc is still dope for a filmmaker.
@@lucaf.1902 , depends on the build and if you are using a fast SD card while having SD overclock enabled. Most complaints about stability issues come from those who think a 100MB/s SD card means write speeds. No, it’s typically means around 50/50. For instance, 50MB/s write speeds and 50MB/s read speeds that equal 100MB/s. You will be surprised at how many EOS M users have tried ML and then trashed it based on a bad build and/or slow SD card lol.
@@michaelray5622 yeah I bought one for 120 usd and they still had their old ml software on it. It couldn't record anything because it had a 50/50 card, bought a Sandisk Extreme Pro 170MB/s, so hoping for it to work.
@@HoloScope I'm in the same place as you Holo Scope; I've been sweat'n it trying to get the ML build running like these guys and Zeek (all of you ML guys are amazing btw), but I'm using a sandisk extreme in the micro to adaptor version. Can you let me know if the 170 SD works for you?
Thanks for the video Cole, I have a question. I have an EOS-M and a BMPCC and want to use both at a shoot, but i'm not sure how hard it is to match the footage up? I'm considering buying a second EOS-M just so I know I can match it up. Then begs the question, should I keep the BMPCC? Especially now with the new crop mood bringing the EOSM to the next level! If I see a good deal on a EOSM should I just grab it? LOL
Hi Mothy, I think it should be quite easy considering you're shooting raw. Try to use similar lenses and I'd try a couple things on mlv app. Export the same clip 3 times. CDNG, Arri & BMDfilm. It seems right to BMD film but sometimes the others can get you better match faster depending on environment. Don't sell that bmpcc just yet. As good as crop mood is, it's always good to have a different A cam
what are some good cheap wide angle lenses for the BMPCC? C- mount lenses included, i've got a few I use with my EOS-M and they actually work a little better on the BMPCC because of the crop factor. Just wondering if you've discovered a magic c mount for those wide shots?
Not c mount but I recently showed some shots on my Olympus video Lenses for m43 and I spoke about the SLR Magic 8mm. It can bloom a lot in bright light sources but it really is a great lens for m43. I paid £50 so try to find a used one for cheap.
It really is awesome 😁. I was looking at the ninja v and I do have extra money but could you tell me ways I can benefit? Ps, I've got the BMMCC now as I wanted the compressed raw and 60fps. Do you still think the ninja v would benefit me? Thanks
Some people are going nuts on the price but they're out there. Go to Facebook marketplace or mpb.com I sold an amazing kit for £470 Bmpcc, 5 batteries, 2 chargers, FD speedbooster, 3 FD lenses, npf battery adapter, cage with handle, cables etc etc
Even though the OG still isn't real easy to use ie SD cards, battery, pre-amps, screen etc it's running native software which is always best I wouldn't pay more than £400 though.
@@wilsoncortezribeiro nope, that one is coming next...in November. We've just had more restrictions placed on us so we're just working out the details now and then good to go. I need to talk to you very soon.
Crazy to see a video like this lol I have both of these cameras and have used them for years if you know what you're doing these 2 together are amazing run and gun cameras give great image especially when upscale to 4K
@@thesuprari ahhh ok, there was a Tilta for £40 on Facebook marketplace but it was UK and it's gone now. I've seen the same case which they had in Tenet for sale....I think AliExpress and it's smallrig.
@@noodlessoul8356 let's put it this way...it's the only raw shooter for around £100. It can be used for certain things but if you wanted something cheap & serious then try tracking down a Blackmagic micro 1080p. They still come with a couple of hurdles ie they need a monitor, buttons on the front and finding compatible memory cards but it's solid, reliable, better compression, better frame rates, battery life and pre-amps. They can be found cheaper than the OG I think but it's definitely not for everyone.
@@rcisthedriver Riddlesdown that's crazy. We used to battle boys from there back in the day lol. Wow you went proper out of London...tbh I'm looking to make a move myself soon but south coast, I've lived in Croydon my whole life and it's a bit mad now. Thanks for stopping by bro and big thanks for the comment 🙌🏾
@@Altcine Haha small world dude Mate it's such a nice change of scenery outside of the capital, but my hearts always back home. Make the adventure man, the south coast is lovely. Thanks for the videos dude!
If you can get the OG cheaper than £400 then yes. People are asking too much.... it's a great camera but people need to be serious and stop this overcharging.
