Thanks Nathan!!! I have a 1997 528I as my daily with 147,000 miles. The previous owner deleted the CCV already. However, the the crankcase breather was routed back to the intake and the dipstick was capped. That resulted in a lot of oil being deposited infront of the throttle body. BTW, my car has an S50 intake and larger throttle body (no DISA) I ended up venting the crankcase and dipstick with small K&N filters. I did attach a long 3/8 hose to the dipstick in case some oil were to leak out. All you videos are awsome and very helpful. Thank you for your time.

Hey thanks alot for the videos. I just finished my ccv delete w/ cath can last night. I chose to feed the return line through the stock ccv connection as I have seen many others do. Unfortunately the 3 series doesn't have much room by the intake for mounting the can, so I opted for placing it in the empty battery compartment on the passenger side. Every thing went smoothly except for stripping one of the DISA bolts. Bout to take her for a drive and see if every things ok, just wanted to show some appreciation for the vids, they helped me alot.

How did it all last over time? Did you have any burning oil smell in the cabin?
@christycurtis3152

Thanks Nathan! I did the delete/catch-can on my 2006 x3 (m54) after buying a ccv that was too cheap to snap/catch connectors (inconvenient lesson learned cheap parts!) I used old BMW fittings that are strong and snap into place. Hose from valve to catch-can “in” with hose adapter and clamped all connections well; then catch-can “out” hose to pcv valve (yes, installed pcv valve going correct direction) and up through intake connector to a new return hose with solid connections at hose transitions. This cleared all 14 confirmed and pending codes. Only drive a few miles a day but 4 highway miles to town. 5 -days after catch-can install, I’m getting white smoke from exhaust and under hood, coming directly from under oil fill cap. Can smell exhaust in cabin (yes, I know that’s unsafe to breath in). Not causing engine temp gauge to change. No apparent oil anywhere but getting oil change today as oil is bad. Thoughts please?! (Not going back to BMW or local BMW shop who quoted $1200-$3400 for ccv & hose replacements!)

Thank you for your videos! I was quoted over $1,000 to replace valve cover gasket and ccv replacement. I'm a single mom and cant afford that.... so, believe it or not, I did the work myself. I tried the ccv replacement and it was a pain in the ass, so I followed your instructions from this video and my car is running better than it ever has!! The only issues I had were trying to explain to the guys at autozone what I was doing.

Thanks Nathan. I recently purchased an x5 that was in mint condition but smoked like hell. Fixed it with the conversion. Sold it shortly after for a rather nice profit. Would have ended up spending an hour or two taking the manifold off to replace ccv had I not found this video.

@BMWe-oz9wk 6 лет назад
I’d stick with oem, typically only need to replace the ccv every 120k ish. So if anything you’ll probably only need to replace it once. But if you want an easier job I’d definitely pick one of these two options as they don’t require you to take off the entire manifold. Just do your research!

Antonio Wray you can replace the CCV without removing the intake manifold. I did it the other day. Just remove air box, intake boots, DISA, ICV, and throttle body.

If u connect the valve cover to the vacumm port on back of intake it will push air back into the engine causing all the oil to be pushed out the vent on the dipstick lol

thats what I thought too. it sucked it in. its a brand new rear seal. I put it in a month ago bc I just rebuilt the whole engine bc of a blown head gasket and the block was no good so I got another one. Anyways, I vented the valve cover and the dipstick and still leaking. If the blue devils dont work, I only know one way to fix it and thats tear the engine back down and take the engine and transmission back apart.

Is it better to run the crankcase gasses back into the intake manifold? It seems to me to just vent it off under the car or straight to the exhaust is better for fresher air and more oxygen going into your intake. The only problem I could see arising with that method is the car actually wanting to run with the crankcase gases, like it's tuned that way. Or it will adjust itself based off o2 and maf sensor? Any answers to the venting method?

This is so hokey, just do it the right way and be glad to did! remove the throttle body to access the crankcase valve and be sure to get a new oil dipstick O-ring. put the O-ring on the tube before putting it back in as opposed to trying to put the O-ring in the oil pan. the first option shown is just bad, the second option shown in the video would be more involved then just doing it the right way. be sure to get a kit with all the hoses needed and watch a good instructional video

Uhm...I'm guessing you mispoke regarding the function of the CCV/PVC/EGR/OSV valve being "to separate the oil from the water"... and meant to say somehing more like "oil from the air" which is indeed one of its function, as well as regulating the presure inside the crackcase to avoid blow-by and blowing out seals in the more extreme cases.

Could we just connect one end of the hose to the valve cover and the other end to the dipstick? I have removed the distribution piece on the intake malifold and blocked the 6 holes using 6 blanking plugs. Fitted 1 inch air filter to the valve cover and blocked the dipstick tube ( where the drain hose would fit from the ccv valve ). Runs fine but it still consumes oil because a lot of vapor comes out of that 1 inch filter.

how long does the mod take when doing the 1st option ? Using 3/8" hose with 3/8" x 1/2' shark bite male adapter or connector you described within this video does my 2006 have this cap you mention on the intake rear of motor as you describe here? I see the kit to fix this has various prices for cost $39.68 seems to be the least expensive way of going to fix if someone has this problem. i have the new coolant recovery tank installed guy says he burped it so no air was in the system but after driving it on NYS Thruway it dipped towards hot but then corrected itself and remained in the center of the temperature range indicator in the dash cluster. The SID information display says check coolant level, is this normal and i just need to now top it off? or do i take it back to the guy shop and have them go over the system again to double check that they got all the air out of my system? lot of these shops are very shady characters...and you just never fully know whether your getting good to great service or being shafted...and my other post was regarding these: CCV PCV

Hello vacuum at the oil cap is normal, sometimes the catch can can make a valve cover gasket leak worse, i would remove the cover and if the gasket is still soft just reseal the whole thing not just the corners also check the valve cover for cracks, dont forget to cap off your oil dipstick tube rubber line.

Jon B the hose has to be kinked closed , you have to use a reinforced hose to make the bend from the rear of the intake, lately running a vented catch can without vacuum has been working the best

If you delete the CCV (oil separator) you will just get all the oil from the crankcase directly into your intake manifold. That's why they put the CCV there. The White smoke you see is the oil from the crankcase being burnt into your cylinders. The single line mod is the dumbest thing I've ever seen, I don't know how this guy can recommend people do it. You will either need an catch can or a new CCV and do the 02Pilot mod.

Nathan -- your videos are great and very helpful. I certainly appreciate the effort you have put into making them! I have a 2004 4.4L with about 180K on it -- it runs like a scalded ape -- but if I sit at a light for a couple of minutes; when I start moving, I leave a very distinct blue cloud of smoke behind me. :( I thought that this engine I have is an E53 (?) but it looks like your videos are for 6-cylinders -- so that makes me wonder if this will work for my 8-cylinder? I've been quoted ridiculous numbers to have this fixed at a shop --> "your valve guide seals are shot and the engine needs to be rebuilt/replaced for ~$6000". WTH?! Any advice/tips/suggestions will be sincerely appreciated. :)Dan

You should have an N62 engine. I'm not familiar with them, but you can bet they have a similar oil separating system. Definitely sounds like your problem. Bad valve seals would smoke the most when releasing the throttle at high revs (high engine vacuum sucks oil past the seals). A bad CCV system will smoke the most when accelerating as you said, as the oil builds up in the manifold and pipes when idling.

Thankyou for your Videos. I have a Japan spec RHD 1999 E39 528i. I have done the single hose CCV delete conversion and blocked the dipstick port. Now I have a P0505 fault code I cant get rid of. I ended up removing all intakes boots and checked them for leaks. I have replaced the ICV with a second hand unit. I did have a perished vac hoses running from manifold to sec air valve which I have replaced. There is a check valve in that line white/black. Which way round does it go? I have tried both ways with no joy. The car starts instantly but idles high when cold. When I pump the throttle the car revs to approx 2000 rpm then as it comes down it stumbles and then ASC light comes on and ENGINE FAILSAFE MODE. My car has a fuel regulator on the end of the fuel rail that used to have a vac hose to the CCV. What shoukd happen with this hose after the delete? I have check ed there is slack in the throttle cable as per you P0505 video. Any help much appreciated

plug the small vacuum line that went to the ccv, your icv needs to be cleaned and inspect the rubber hose gong to it, also if the throttle cables are too tight it will cause this exact problem, make sue they are not holding the throttle plate open at idle or it will cause the icv code

Am i the only one seeing the problem by these options? Isn't the VALVE actually a valve for a reason? Option 1 direct to intake, the plug on the intake is on my car for the brake enhancer. When the valve cover is direct on the intake it will make vacuum in the valvecover when engine is idling (throttle body is almost closed) when you go 6500rpm and remove your foot from the gas and keeps it in gear then the vacuum is very high. This is not good for the engine, it can destroy oil seal and it sucks oil out of the valve-train. The valve is ment to close when the vacuum gets to high. So bypassing it like this is bad. And furthermore "newer" cars have a air measure system that meters the air which it can't when attached directly to the intake. When engine is idling go out and remove the oil cap, if you PCV Valve is broken or if you bypass it like this then the engine will having problems idling since it now can suck in air that aren't accounted for by the computer. Plus the oil that are ment to be condensed and put back in the oil sump is now put into the intake manifold polluting the world and even worse if you don't care for pollution it will make you car run bad since it now also have to burn oil which pollute the combustion. If this should be done then at least but it before the throttle body so the car doesn't vacuum the valve cover to much. The pick up can solution is the same as original PCV Valve but without the valve and reuse of fine oil.

At high revs the crankcase can be overpressurised causing oil leaks that previously did not occur... maybe your pipes are restricted? Make sure you connect the pipe to the rocker cover in the same spot that he did, not on the little nipple at the back of the engine

Finally some helpful advise, thank you Nathan. THIS just started happening to my newer, 05 e46, it has higher kms on it like 180, my other only 112kms! Ive been freaking out about this retarded amount of white smoke at start up, sometimes if i run it more than 20mins to work, other days nothing. I live in Canada, im sure our shit winter clogged it up. I just had to do my rad, hoses, thermostat, expansion tank, changed my waterpump because of the shit plastic impeller, while doing this. Just ordered a new ccv valve set up frm ebay, but will take a while. Do you think its ok to do the "single hose setup" until the new one gets here.?? Some of the threads read it doesn't lube the top rings that way? I also here catch is shit for Canada, cause of crap weather? I've seen the insulated ccv, im thinking i'll buy the pipe foam/Styrofoam and just cut it to fit the new one.. your thoughts? I really wish some sharp mechanic out there, who knows more about the stupid pressure and how to fix it. Definitively..they could make a fortune. Charge $250. Problem solved..why wouldn't BMW do some sort of apology recall system..any way thanks
@dennislyb
@dennislyb 7 лет назад
Dear all, to make ccv delete possible and to install with oil catch can, you MUST install an aftermarket PCV valve. The purpose of ccv originally is make sure one way flow. you must make sure the crank case cover outlet must connect with PCV valve. it makes sure gas pressure or blowby to blow out one way and prevent them from return back into the crankcase resulting internal pressure to force from whichever hole easily to come out. I realized this when i realize no gas pressure pushing out from crankcase to oil catch tank when idling resulting oil leaks near oil filter gasket and oil filter cover. There are many types of pcv that suits different engine capacity, please get pcv that suits your engine capacity. My engine capacity is 3litre and I am ordering a pcv from Toyota Landcrusier UZJ100. Should be suitable. Thanks.
@dennislyb
@dennislyb 7 лет назад
To add one more info, if you do not put pcv valve, your engine will display engine failsafe prog. Because the computer detects that something wrong with your car, minimize your engine to pushmore to prevent your engine to get from bad to worse.

@tracylewisperformance1328

If you delete the functions of the PCV system your allowing most of the damaging wear causing compounds that enter as blow-by. These quickly settle into the oil reducing its ability to protect. Understanding the PCV system does far more than deal with emissions. There must be constant flushing and evacuation to prevent this wear.
@NathansBMWWorkshop
@NathansBMWWorkshop 6 лет назад
The pcv or ccv system didn't actually work, it was a poor system, the best way to run one of these cars is with a catch can, the drawback is that you have yo dump it all the time
@tracylewisperformance1328
@tracylewisperformance1328 6 лет назад
The CCV is an issue on all of these. As long as you evacuate, your good. Watch this video to see just how ineffective most catchcans are only trapping from 15% to 30% max. If you just delete and vent, you are leaving most of the water, acids, raw fuel, and abrasive particulate matter to remain in the crankcase contaminating the engine oil. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-IZYYdnwIEX0.html

Tracy Lewis Performance man at this point. I have installed more than 50 catch cans, a BMW engine with a can on it will have a dry disa and icv, the inside of the intake manifold will be dry after years of running it, you pull the intake apart on any bmw running a ccv new or old and it will have a layer of oil, the oil damages the rubber pieces causing diss and intake boot failure and premature failure or o-ring type gaskets , on the n54 n52 and Mini Cooper engines this oil must if what causes the carbon buildup issues , you have to remember I have been doing this for many years and a large amount of cars , I try very hard not to put out incorrect information
@tracylewisperformance1328
@tracylewisperformance1328 6 лет назад
Good deal. Watch this video. As most cans trap only 15% or so of what enters them, far more benefits are had by using the only design that stops 95% plus: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-IZYYdnwIEX0.html You can perform this same test to see the results. Email me direct for more details: APDEG@aol.com These also provide full time evacuation using 2 separate evacuation suction sources.

@Marrkmoore843 8 лет назад
Nope.I thought that 2 and I was not. I got some devil blue and put it in and I hope it works. I got high hopes but I think the reality is that it blew it somehow. Why was my oil pressure light coming on and off? I am 100% sure the seal was blown and the catch can was the cause. I just want to figure out why? The only thing I did to the car was change pcv valve to catch can and drive 20miles. Oil pressure light was coming on and off. Mainly on at stops. Started to smell oil. Got home and parked on cement and noticed leak. Drove on some ramps. Got under and original thought it was coming from valve cover but after wiping everything off and starting it up and watching.my worst nightmare came true. The rear main seal was leaking a steady drip of oil.it actually mad me nauseous and I had to take a break. Anyways, im 100% sure the catch can caused it somehow.
@NathansBMWWorkshop
@NathansBMWWorkshop 8 лет назад
It would of had to suck the rear main in and thats not possible the way they are setup, after this catch can video i now run a single hose directly to vacuum with no problems and that is even more vacuum on the crankcase, why dont you unhook the catch can and see if it stops leaking first.
@bobrice3219
@bobrice3219 8 лет назад
Couldn't you run the tube from the dipstick to the valve cover... its basically the right diameter... Also the valve cover chamber has passages thru the block to the lower crankcase area of the engine anyway for venting and oil draining as far as I know almost every engine does so the void of these would be equal pressures? You could even incorporate a filter or not...You would still plug off the other part the way you already were.
@NathansBMWWorkshop
@NathansBMWWorkshop 8 лет назад
DO NOT run it to the dipstick tube, it will pull all of the oil out of the oil pan, the pressure is equal from top to bottom sine it is open where the timing chain runs

Hello Nathan, thank you for your videos. I want to hear you suggestion , my 2003 E39 M54B22 125kW engine now in cleaning process because we seen engine burns oil. We will changed all gaskets, suction and exhaust subaps(valves), rings of the pistons, cranck/rod guides etc. And we will replace PCV system 4pcs hoses. Engine block have not got any physical demage, cylinders ok, main cylinder cover ok. When we dismantled all hoses inside covered with oil and black particules, camshaft cover also same. If engine master (my service technician) clean plastic camshaft cover and clean inside the PCV valve, is it enough or we need to be replace these 2 parts also? If I need to change, then how is Febi brand for camshaft cover and pcv valve? Im asking , because we have got huge price for original BMW parts. camshaft cover BMW 900euro Febi 220 euro, PCV valve BMW 100euro Febi 22euro. Actually if good cleaning ok for our dismantled original parts I do not want to replace with new ones. But I do not know inside of the factory pressed oil seperstor section of the camshaft cover wich is really expensive in Turkey. Please share your opinion with me. Regards
