In this episode, I take you back in time to when the touring first came into the workshop for a simple engine bay clean up, which quickly turned into a lot more than I was expecting.
Once I get you back up to speed, I try, along with some friends to get the preface lift engine in a facelift car running once again.
Thanks for watching! Subscribe with the bell on to see this car back to factory condition.

Dude - Magnificent job, iam impressed seeing your determination. One thing I must say - Never, ever put filler/putty on bare steel. It wil rust quickly because fillers are higroscopic and you trapped moisture inside. It will react with steel, sou you must cut fillers off to avoid rusting. You should spray epoxy primer directly on steel, then filler/putty and next epoxy primer again. Then use acrylic primer and paint. Keep going, Iam not a fan of BMW but admire your work.
@RestoreIt
@RestoreIt 3 года назад
Thanks for the advice Remont! Good to know now rather than later when I do the full restoration! Cheers.
@RemontidEalny
@RemontidEalny 3 года назад
@@RestoreItIn dry climate, chances of failure are smaller , so maybe you are lucky. Just remember the rule next time - always keep putty between epoxy primer layers.
@xav1uz
@xav1uz 3 года назад
just curious, while i understand spraying epoxy primer on bare metal first, why put epoxy primer on top of filler ?
@RemontidEalny
@RemontidEalny 3 года назад
@@xav1uz To close it between layers of epoxy primer. It prevents a various paint defects in next steps. The most proper technology is: 1 - Rust filler applied on bare steel if there is any corrosion 2 - Epoxy primer 3 - Putty Then you may sand the putty to recover all shapes and surfaces. Just dry sandpaper - absolutely no water!! just dry sanding. 4 - sealing of sanded putty with another layer of epoxy primer, which is non higroscopic in opposite to acrylic primer 5 - Then Application of Acrylic primer in 2-max 3 layers 6 - Application of dry guide coat ( control powder, control spray etc) 7 - wet sanding, using dry guide layer as visual help, as long as needed to restore proper shape of surface 8 - Rinsing using silicone remover 9 - Basecoat (color) 10 - clearcoat.... I know there is a lot of steps, but if you do it properly there is no way the rust will come out again... unless it is a Mazda... :D

Very commendable to do the troubleshooting, it purrs like a kitten now! I've had to do some troubleshooting myself on my Mk3 Golf, misfiring issues and all that. Turned out coil was bad (got zapped when I wanted to touch it, great way to test ha) and even after replacing that, it went from misfires in wet weather to constantly running on 3. Popped the spark plug wires one by one and found the one that was broken. Such a great feeling.

I did a motronic 1.3 conversion on my e28 this summer. So I could ditch the gearbox sensors and all that old stuff. It's pretty easy actually. You only need a few wires to make it start. Power to dme, both from batterie AND ignition to wake up the ecu, power to coil, power to starter (one wire is enough the other is to unload the circuit), grounds etc. Turn the key to the on position, you should hear the relays click and the air vane buzz. If not you have a problem already (mine had a faulty dme relay which was too resistant, only had 2 volts out), changed it, then had spark but no start, my 6 injectors were gummed up, changed those and it started immediately. The motronic 1.3 is the better platform and more modern, stick to this one, as it's also the one from the car. The engine is the same, it's just the sensors that are related to which generation of dme and wiring you want.

Hey I had this problem, too. You need to find a loom and ecu which worked together before. So you can sort it out.

I'll never have this problem again thankfully :)
