@@TSunderground I disagree, while I think the E34 is very cool and good looking, the E39 has the perfect balance between old school and technology. Still has safety features that can save you, but won't interrupt you on normal spitrited driving, like so many cars nowadays. It's still pretty easy to work on. It also has more power, better handling and brakes.

@@TSunderground In Germany you know the e39 is the best 5 Series, as Jonathan just said. The amount of e39 with way over 300.000km on the trip is astonishing (especially the 528i and 530i models). E34 are rarely to be seen because of poor rust precautions done by bmw.

@@Xero285 i know a lot of people with 500 000 + km e34s ;) and also seen a lot of rusty e39 here e34 is rare becasue is model from 1988 dont forget this and these day still on the road the last true 5 series as i said before you cant beat the facts

They are not slow, would be a little faster even if un-limited but not by much. M5's when unlimited claws very close to 300 km/h

@@PowerslideSWE then 540i can also be close because it have 2.81 rear differential but m5 have 3.15, only m5 can hit little bit more rpms

@@PowerslideSWE It would be not a little faster if unlimited, it would certainly be faster by far. Even a 530i runs 250km/h limited claimed with about 231hp. A well maintained 540i would do probably 270 km/h

Eh... not really. See more w210 than 5 series today. 210 is bulletproof compared to E39 and horrific electrical shit

@@TheM275 ofcourse you see more of them. They were barely driven in comparison to the e39 because the e class then was mainly an older folk car because of its classic and somewhat dated looks. Whereas the E39 was elegant, sporty and a machine in the driving facette, thus we have a lot of e39s with 300,000+Kms. . I've driven both, the exterior remains a subject of personal choice. But the sheer driving skill, I'm sorry to disappoint you, the e39 had no opponent for a very long time. Most of the w210 have a maximum of 200,000kms. You'd be better off having them at a museum than driving them. Goldzahn is right, it really was no competition, at all.

Yea, the E39 M5 outperforms the W210 E55 in every aspect, 0-60, 1/4 mile, slalom, and transmission choices.

The E39 is brilliant... even the 523i is quite fun

@@Majko420 I dont agree. I have owned both cars. 3 w210's and 2 E39 and 1 E38. the styling is personal but the interior is nicer on the BMW's thats for sure. All my Merc's had rust issues while my BMW's had zero rust issues. But engine wise. Those merc's were bulletproof. I had a 540i with nothing but engine issues. (timing chain/oil consumption/worst coolant system ever/head gaskets made of cheese) My 728i/528i were a bit better but still alot of engine problems compared to the Mercedes. I had a E430 and a E320 I6 and still own a CLK 320 V6. I have never ever had engine/transmission problems with them. Just rust issues wich Mercs of the 1995 to 03 era are notorious for. But still I miss my BMW nevertheless. Great elegant car and still timeless.

And still this disign was rushed because of the e-class and it was done in a very short period of time. Still a very good looking car even today.

not all 540i has that power. Most has 280-290 when healthy

@@foxyboots Pre-vanos examples (96-98) usually has around 315-320hp when healthy. Scary close to the V12 in the E38 750i.

@@foxyboots Friend's dad got one dyno tuned and power at 110k miles or almost 200k kms (before tune) was 292 engine horsepower. You can watch a video from Visioracer who also included the 540i in his video. The name of the video is "10 Cars Which Cheated About Their Power Outputs"

Just bought a low mileage (140k) 6 speed manual v8!!! NON VANOS! Check it out on the channel brah! Valve cover and oil gasket done timing rebuilt coolant system rebuilt! Amazing car! I thought I got an “old” one that wasn’t that good but then I realized the 2000-2003 are nothing but problems!!!

I since bought a 1997 E39 535i auto with the smaller capacity M62B35 engine, its a cool car with the electric comfort seats and the sunroof, TV/Satnav etc but that 50 bhp and 900cc loss is quite noticeable ! compared with my old 4.4 540i , I am torn apart whether to swap in an M62B44 from a 540i or 740i or just leave it as it is and get some tuning/ECU remap as this car only has 47,000 miles and I really don't wanna wreck it lol, nowadays its becoming pretty hard to find low mileage decent spec e39's, especially the 540i which seem to be becoming scarcer by the day !

@@BITTYBOY121 extremely scarce and they sell in less than 24hrs when put up. I contacted 4 sellers before this over a period of time and only one response saying sold three others sold in 24 hours ad deleted didn’t even have the decency to say sold lol that quick but I guess I got lucky w this one. ! Nothing like the 6 speed manual 540i so much power and feel and NON VANOS!

I agree with you. But if the majority of the consumer market has no taste, nothing changes. Ever. You can buy your e39 and polish it. As I do :-)

@@tlustejmicin Too right ! - The E39 BMW's always look so fabulous. I have just fitted the 2001 facelift fiber optic tail lights to my 1997 535i which had those dated orange indicator front and rear lights. (I had to use a small round file to enlarge some of the existing holes for each light for the new tail lights to fit the pre 2001 E39), as they changed the position of the screw holes slightly just to be awkward ! The tail lights also have their two light driver modules which are located in the tire well and are secured in place with galvanized steel brackets that are held in place by the spare wheel retaining rod and a 12mm nut. I have also fitted those great looking angel eye head lights with the yellow rings which come on whenever the side lights are switched on and they make the front of my E39 look so much nicer now ! I've got the clear side repeater indicators to fit, but I don't have the orange bulbs for them yet, and the ones that came out of my old side indicator repeaters are clear yellow wedge bulbs, so I have to get a couple of orange coloured wedge/push fit bulbs of the correct wattage and I should be OK. @@9.5.9.5 Just my opinion of a fan whose wish is to buy 540i after I put my 530D into sleep :) I just cry a lot. I really wish they did not hire GangBangle :) My opinion may not be pleasing but I can assure you I am the one suffering cuz the new designs :D It is hell to have this particular taste and refuse to change it. Cuz even e9x/e6x are not what I would switch to after e39. Well if I had to buy e39 now it wouldn’t be the 520i. It’s not too slow, I would say it’s enough but it depends on what power level you are used to. As for motorway you can cruise comfortably with 140km/h, above that the rpms get high and it’s not the most pleasurable thing.

It's just that I'm looking for a cheap-ish DD and found this rather well-preserved 520i M Sport with NO rust. 525i or 530i's are often 40+% more. Deep down I know I'd really be satisfied with a 525i at least. Though they all have only 5-speeds so not ideal from cross-continent cruising with luggage that I'll be doing in a few months. 😒

We had a E39 530 touring for 13y. In metallic green, with 20 spoke 17” wheels and black buffalo leather seats. It had double glazing, so even when zipping across Germany at 250 kph you wouldn’t hear jack shit. Only the silky smooth straight six up front doing what it was designed for, munching kilometer after kilometer at a fast pace. I guess his 540i has double glazing too, considering its a more expensive, more powerful model. It probably has. God I miss that E39, it was such a great car, drove well, practical. Ours was reliable as well.

You can hear it as soon as the vehicle starts, it's a rattling in the engine bay
