Oil Change on my BMW E39 M5. This facelift model has about 73,000 miles on it. Of course there is the debate about 5w30 vs 10w60...feel free to tell me what you're using and why in the comments section. Also I leveled the car using floor jacks in order to prove that the oil pan can be emptied while on ramps alone. No additional oil exited the pan when the rear of the car was lifted.

I use 10w60 because the forum scared me into using it. I didn't see much of a difference between using 5w30 and 10w60. Also you should put about a quart of oil into the oil filter housing and soak it up as you put in the new filter so it doesn't run dry when you start the car for the first time.

you are right! I knew i'd get called out for it haha. Next time will def add some oil to the filter housing

Cool tutorial Tom. I think it's great that the filter is located up top instead of below. A lot easier to access. I noticed a lot of debate about the oil on the forums when it comes to the GTV6 too. Some people track their car or other keep it as a street car. The next video looks great!

I always crack the oil filler cap after removing the drain plug, figuring slightly less oil will leap onto my forearms. Otherwise, exactly as I used to do it on my E39 540. That oil filter design up top sure was nice. The factory roof rack for these cars is great if you have any use for one. Could safely carry a canoe at 100 mph!

You might consider sending an oil sample to Blackstone Laboratories. It alleviated any concerns I had about oil I was using, and health of my engines. I know exactly where I stand now. Also great to have for resale.

The legend... love this model. Regarding 10W60 vs 5W30 oil... it's a huge difference between them. For powerful NA engines, 10W60 is much better. According to Castrol: - at 0C, the 5W30 oil has around 40-50 cSt, which is fine at cold start, while the 10W60 has around 70-80 cSt - at 100C, the 5W30 oil has 11 cSt, while the 10W60 has around 21 cSt. Almost double. You need lubrication at high rpm, and at full throttle, an M5 or an M3 heats up. Oil could easily reach 120C, while the coolant doesn't exceed 105C, so at 120C the 5W30 has less than 11 cSt. This would make the oil way too watery, so oil pressure would decrease, and lubrication won't be that great. This would add extra wear on the engine. On the M3 e92, BMW recommends 10W60, so for these kind of models, 10W60 is the winner. By the way, I use 10W60 in my Audi A3 with a 1.6L engine, and it's just fine. I love it. Great video!

superior film strength is why 10w60 is preferred. i believe it...on 5w30 at high rpm my 01 S62 makes it known that 5w30 is just tolerated. I'm trying RedLine 5w50 next change

Both Hengst and Mann are great filters.

Oh man, I totally forgot about that belly pan... I always remove the ones on my cars because I like being able to see leaks when they start. By the way the socket on top of the oil filter housing is a 35mm socket, and you actually buy it at Autozone. That's what I've used for all of my BMWs.

It's not vacuum. It is the anti drain back valve to keep the filter canister full of oil.

Lol you're welcome in Ohio anytime! I'd be happy to go through it for you haha and from our experience, the Mann filter is great, neither Ryan nor I have ever had any issues with them on any of our cars

Just was curious what Turner recommends? Great vid as always, your channel is pretty dam cool. I live about 20 min from Turner in NH. Would like to meet u sometime man. Take care.
@TedwardDrives
@TedwardDrives 7 лет назад
Thats dope! Turner offers both but tends to recommend 10w60. Although there is no official reason given by BMW, the adopted unofficial reasoning is that they changed piston rings in 2001. I'll be all over New England this year for shows and cruises.. If you ever see me say hi!

I was on the road, forgot to bring extra oil & of course I get the low oil warning. Dealer is using Shell instead of Castrol and I was quoted $20 per quart!

Mine has 155'000 miles and still the first cluth and motor. A lot of smal shit failed while the preowner owned it. This cost him a lot of money because he went to a BMW dealer for everything (15'000Dollar in 3 years an 60'000miles). I fix everything myself. When I bought the car the thermostat, a PDC sensors and the mass airflowsensor were broken or kind of defective (failing somethimes). I have a friend who made 250'000miles with his M5 E39 until he sold it. He never got into any big trouble.

I see, good to know. I'm a fan of the looks and how the v8s sounds with straight pipes or aftermarket exhaust.
@lukasmeyer1992
@lukasmeyer1992 7 лет назад
Stright piped the sound is horrible. Sounds like one of these asocial ricer corvettes people in the hood drive. Eisenmann or Supersprint sport mufler is enough to make it sound nice.

Regarding the whole oil thing, like a few other comments: 5w30 is, I think, too thin. At high engine temps, this oil is going to thin out a lot, and at that point the Vanos units will have less precise engagements. It's not just me, though; Redline oils say the same: this video, between the 6 and 8 minute mark, has some great info for BMWs specifically. m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6VLMfUz34R0.html

I would also 10W60. And why the hell 5w30 if you can go for 0w40 what is better in winter and under heat. Back in 2001 the best fully synthetic oils were not as good as today.

But on the oil cap it still says “bmw recommends castrol”
@FEAR_CB
@FEAR_CB 10 месяцев назад
BMW's recommendation from 20+ years ago vs the community's real world experience have led to the oil selections of today. BMW also used to claim that the transmission fluid never needed to be changed and would last the life of the car.

Ted i own 2000(M5). I use Castrol 10w60 any thoughts on Motul 8100 X-Power 10W-60 pls advise
@TedwardDrives
@TedwardDrives 7 лет назад
I'm not expert on the differences between brands. For the sake of safety and not worrying, i'd just stick with the BMW approved 10w-60. If your car is heavily modified with internals thats when its a good idea to start investigating oil content
@lukasmeyer1992

In Europe all M5 E39 get Castrol 10W60 TWS, even Facelift Models. I would go for 10W60 Castrol Supercar, the TWS is discontinued. Btw. my 2001 M5 E39 started to burn oil with the 15'000 miles oilchange the cars computer told me to. With new oil oil consumtion went down to 1L on 2000-2500Miles. This is ok for a 155'000 mile car.
@TedwardDrives
@TedwardDrives 7 лет назад
2000 models can burn as much as a liter per 700 miles! 2001-03 tend to burn about 1L per 2000 miles. I usually change every 5,000 miles
@willt718

@@lukasmeyer1992 change at 5k regardless of TBN. You should be aware of the ghost riders doing the most damage. what are ghost riders? they are the sub-40micron insolubles that flow unabated throughout your oil passages. a human hair is 80 microns. your oil filter screens 40 micron particles. there's a lot of bad stuff flowing through your engine . 15k oil change is nuts. "lifetime" fluid is nuts.

What do you do with the old oil ?
@TedwardDrives
@TedwardDrives 6 лет назад
disposed by Autozone or Walmart. Usually I just refill the old bottles with the old junk. For other fluids such as brake fluid, I wait until the city's hazardous waste day to dispose of it.
