BMW E46 Trunk Wiring Fix How-To

In this video I look at the wiring going to the trunk or boot lid and likely trouble spots. There is also a pretty basic lesson learned in there.
Recommended Tools:
Philips (star) screwdriver
Flat or slotted screwdriver
Plastic trim removal tool
Knife or box cutter knife
18 gauge wire (to splice in repair if needed
Soldering gun and solder
Electrical tape (liquid tape optional)
Multi-meter

Very helpful as I need to do this repair on my 04 330ci. My license plate lights aren't working and the trunk latch isn't either.

Thanks. It’s a pretty common problem. I’ve had with an E46 and an E60.

Hope someone can help, my car key not working nor is the inside lock, car died on me whilst driving (luckily was in slow traffic and got help pushing to side) recover van came and couldn’t start it, even blew his own fuse trying to jump start mine, left it at a garage and couple days later he jump started it and started straight away, alternator is new and charging the battery he said, been told by the recovery man that most likely it’s a short in the wiring, any advice my fellow Beemers?

Ahh E46 trunk wiring loom repair. Been there, done that. Looks like the wires are run well in the trunk lid. Mine was broken a bit lower where I did need to slice the rubber open. I wrapped the loom with tesa tape then wrapped plastic around it taped that and the rubber stays closed around it ok. Not ideal but seems to keep it pretty protected. The car looks super clean, how is she driving?

Thanks for the comment on the harness protector. Glad to hear it can be closed up successfully. And thanks for the comments on the car. She’s been quite a project for the last year. Currently running just like BMW intended. Smooth, tight and solid on the road. Everything is working as it should. Thinking I’ll put her on hhe market and then move on to a new challenge. Cheers

Having the same issue with no parking or reverse lights. I pushed the rubber through to the trunk and there's no broken wires. I tested the wiring further down in the trunk and there's no power for the reverse or parking lights only the licence plate wires had power. Any ideas?

Thanks for the comment. I’m afraid electrical issues are not my strength but……I’m assuming fuses are ok. My approach would be to get power to parking and reverse lights - rule out issue with bulbs, socket etc. Then rule out the switches as issues. Assuming that’s ok I guess start chasing the wires back. I’m not a fan of chasing electrical issues. Good luck
