BMW E70 X5 10.25" Droid UK Android Screen Install - Add Android Auto & Apple Carplay Functionality

Hello everyone,
Welcome back to another Kev's Shed video.
In this one, we will be installing a brand new Android 10.25 inch screen into my BMW E70 X5 40d XDrive to replace the original factory iDrive screen which is old technology by todays standards and lacks touchscreen, Android Auto and Apple Carplay functionality.
The installation itself is relatively straight forward, although I did have to fiddle to get the audio working on the Android side of the device. Additionally the GPS and data functionality wouldn't work initially but I managed to sort this with a little trial and error.
As promised, a link to my device is below, and includes options to add the GPS splitter and rear view camera if your car doesn't already have this.

Just fitted mine same problems😢 navigation doesn’t load… maybe I need to leave it longer, does the weather app work ? Do I also need to plug an aux cable in and where does it go ?? Thanks

Great video thanks. How does the aux port work then? Does the headunit come with an aux cable that must be connected into the cars port in order to use the headunit?

Yes it does, apparently sometimes it will work without the need for the cable to be connected but for the most part it is necessary. It was in my case. All you then do is put the iDrive into Aux mode to pass through any sound from the new headunit.

Can't get the stereo to go fully back in with the bulk of the new wiring harness etc. Trying to move it down and to the passenger side but no dice. Any tips on how you got in?

The chunky black part kinda sits above the unit, it’s tricky and requires 3 hands really but I got there in the end.

The timing chain snapp3d on my e70 x5 last week (despite good servicing intervals/history).... Garage had a look at the damage, its £6000 to fix the damage, essentially its most of an engine rebuild.... Anyway, was thinking of selling it and getting something more modern etc... but ill probably keep it now and update the head unit (built in is getting a little clunky and old compared to modern cars).... This looks ideal

What engine is it and mileage please? I have the m57 and n57 versions.

@@eddy45686 it was at 109k miles when the chain snapped it's an N57 engine

@@junglist_matty I must worry as my e70 is 4.0d the n57 but on 85k miles short journeys now for 4 years. Yearly oil changes but I worry I need to change to m57 e70. But CCC is not as reliable and the facelift did improve lots of issues bar the engine as that was downgraded.

Could you buy a used engine or install a m57 in that body?

Yeah mine is a 2013, one of the last e70s ever made.... There is a slight warning sign, listen to the engine, if it starts making any non normal noises get it checked. Mine started ever so slightly whirring (like rrr-r-rrr-r-rrr-r-rrr type sound) just before the chain snapped... Apparently it's the sound of the chain lengthening and losing a bit of tension..... I had mine checked by a few different muppets who all claimed it was a normal engine sound especially if you do short runs. They all claimed it just needed a bit of a blast on a long run to clear out the engine, but that was utter rubbish as I tried that and it made no difference... Chain replacement costs about £1-1.5k engine rebuild and new chain cost me £5750 at a very good local garage. You can swap the engine, but it costs about £3k, and the chain might break again, and you have no idea about the replacement engine, so I just had mine rebuilt and it's like a new engine now, super smooth and sounds perfect.
