Thanks for that test, I kinda hoped it would be possible in about 13 hours, but yeah, the rain and wind didn't help a lot. After 3 years with the i3s, I'd also hope that they give it an update: - Put in the new 160Ah CATL Cells (they should fit) for 56kWh gross - Increase charging to 75-80kW. Those two items should get the test to or below 12 hours. - Heated steering wheel - Radar-based ACC - Autosteer up to 140km/h - Larger driver's display or head-up display

@@dirki3s821 Because of the carbon chassis, BMW is not making much profit, that is the reason they are not interested in making it better. I think 2023 the new i3 is coming, then they will bring everything you want.
@peteglass3496
@peteglass3496 3 года назад
My list of updates is almost the same as yours, Jadzia, I'd add 'blind spot warning' too, the autosteer doesn't bother me much. It's been well trailed that one last refresh to 150Ah battery was planned but this years problems has pushed it back, we'll have to wait to see if it's real or a mirage. If they don't squeeze in some more battery capacity then the sales will drift away quite quickly in a year as the competition leaves it behind. But with a 50+kWhr battery they will have to work on the CCS power circuitry to take a good 75-80kW up to at least 50% full to make it seriously usable.

My once a year customer in San Francisco bought a used i3 last Xmas for about 15000USD to be their commuter car. Three months later he bought his neighbor's almost brand new Escalade because of the Covid layoffs. He thought it's a perfect car to do the twice a year family trip to Utah, Texas, and Arizona. His today's comment was: "Thanks to the rona we have put 16000 miles to our BMW and 300 miles to the Cad, no out of state trips. Wife mostly working at home, me going to the shop and warehouse when needed, doing some local deliveries. What a perfect little car when you don't need to do long trips."

Nice video again Bjørn, thank you for all your tests. They provide really valuable information and proper insights. I’ve driven my 2019 bmw i3 120Ah for 44k km now. We have had similar experiences with our i3; did our wintersport trip (The Netherlands - Switzerland) of 930km in 13 hours. Used 17-18kWh/100km when driving 100kmh and 21kWh when driving 130kmh (autobahn). Car is nice and comfortable but a little outdated indeed.

Sorry for a bit of nagging about activating the heater while fast charging during this weekend's live stream. Having driven quite a few kilometers in different (rented) i3s I thought that switching on the car and activating climate control should just work. Wrong assumption, I am not used to hanging around in the car while charging. A man called Bjørn is needed to show us all how a car really behaves. Good that the hot keys were demonstrated, very convenient to quickly open all favorites. Pro tip for i3 newcomers is the EcoPRO mode. Gives a very good range prediction based on the maximum speed setting and climate setup. Quite useful when covering longer distances in unknown territory.

Being a happy i3 driver I cannot help feeling the pain of some fair critics (short range, no radar...), but let me tell you that a love this car so much that it’s my first time ever feeling hurt for a car comments. Not sure if you get what I mean (i3 drivers will understand :)

The range is short when you drive faster than 90 km/t. If you drive below 90 its no problem to drive above 300 km. Done it several times during summer. My average consumption last 40.000 km is 1.3 kWh/10 km. Its a city car and should be driven like one. 1000 km challenge is not for this car

Have i3 myself (as my first EV) and I really like it. Use it alot in my city and charge at home. It is very sensitive to weather changes consumption-wise. Wind and rain = oooof. Not to mention strong wind messes up the stability on the road, haha. But, still love it. Bought a 2018 model last decemter and paid $30k for it. Fully charged. I would consider another model with better battery if I had to drive longer distances to get to work.

And even if I shop there, I will never DC charge @ Aldi, because my battery health or my DC/AC ratio is way more valuable for me. I let the free juice go to people who really need it.

It was pretty cold....Wind from front....and ACC. Usual consumption (15 degree Celsius) is about 17 kw at 120 km/h. It ' s usually no problem to look for charging in a range of 230 km. On high speeds, the I3 does not profit from his low weight. In cities, there is 400 km possible. Winter means 135 km from 80 to 10% (speed 120 km/h)

It's December 2023 and i just purchase a 2014 i3 base bev with 119k km, and the battery is as good as the day it was made. Amazingly well engineered for longevity, and I'm in Ontario, Canada where it gets cold. Other than a new set of tires, and all the expected things that happen, like the driver's seat heater not working etc, there is nothing wrong. I use this for close countryside to city commuting and it does the job. Like any used car, if you are handy to fix and maintain things this car in all its iterations is a bargain. I purchased mine for a steal at 10k $cdn and with tax and new tires and rims for winter i will be all in for $13k cdn, At the moment for a fully sorted unit this is a fantastic value. There is no way i would consider long trips because of the lower range and charging times, for that I'm going to eventually get a rex of the 2018 and up variety when the prices come down some more. For longer trips i use my 2018 530e which gives be 6 L/100km in the summer and 7.2 L/100km in the winter combined average, and i am super comfortable and can drive in EV mode at my destination.

I drive the original i3. The car still makes a lot of sense in countries without 150kW+ infrastructure, given the flat charging curve and consistent charging speed. The shame is that BMW will not update the i3 (as we know it). The i3 name will be used for an electric version of the 3 series and the iX1 (an electric version of the upcoming X1) is supposed to be the closest replacement. Both probably arriving between 2021 and 2022.

On the highway, my Corolla (not even diesel) beats Model 3 in terms of cost to travel. It is weird and shouldn’t be this way, but big oil is working against Tesla (‘Murica). I think it will chance in future and electricity will become the cheapest energy.

Thanks Bjorn, I was able to see that driving in the cold and with 120 kph the Electrified app is showing around 80 A drawn from the pack, this gives you around 1,5 hours of driving with a 120Ah pack. This value goes to around 40 when driving 100 kph and 30 with 90 kph. So in my opinion you can safe time and charging stops by driving like a granny with 90 or 100 kph. I've got a 60Ah version and need to do this to get some range. Sadly BMW shows no initiative to upgrade or massivly improve this car. That's why it's sold as a city car, you can absolutely drive long distances but then you need to suffer on speed to charge less. Great you tested this. B.R. from the Netherlands

@rainersta7073
@rainersta7073 2 года назад
Dear Edward. Heared this too. The cw is 0.29 because of the city design. So it hates high speeds and wind from front. And on superhighways, there is no profit from the aluminum carbon design....wind dominates. This car in summer can run 400 km in cities with no charge. Because only 1275 kg net weight. But 120 km/h means charge every 200 to 250 km. (summer, normal conditions) Even with a bigger battery (150 Ah) the problem would stay in general. It is not designed for high speed long distance rides....specially not in winter. Long distances needs low cw construction. A Mercedes Eqs design (cw 0.20) on carbon aluminum platform and a 180 Ah battery would solve the problem....but less convenient in cities. As a city car, the 120 Ah battery is very sufficient. The weight is 279 kg. A 180 AH battery would add at least 80 kg more weight. (if space would be sufficient) A cruel waste of the low weight for city use. Maybe at least you have to make it 10 cm longer because of larger battery. 🙄 Remember VW id 3 is 550 kg more weight. Under 10 kw consumption in cities with ID 3? Impossible. But possible with BMW i3. Therefor the BMW i3 is really not build for long distances with high speed. ACC takes another 1.5 kw/100 km. Speed 105 km/h is a good speed for more than 280 km range in summer. You are still faster than the big trucks but very efficient. 90 km/h might be better but you get trouble with 95 km/h trucks.

@@rainersta7073 thanks for your reply, I switched to ID3 from driving perspective a better car, from IT and infotainment it's not far from faultless, the'll need several years to get it better if they are willing. So for now I'm glad with better range but the overall energy consumption of an ID3 is way higher then the i3, with moderate driving in NL with mostly 100kph I get 20kwh/100km through the year. Not very economic.

@@edwardvanhazendonk Thx too for your reply. Did you buy the big battery? What was your overall consumption with I3? Not really compareble because 120 km/h before and 100 km/h now or? Did you have leasing contract, or did you sell it now. Easy in Netherlands to sell EV? I ordered one of the last I3 in December 21 now supposed to be delivered in May 22. 14 Days later, all production was complete...no more orders possible. The plant in Leibzig will stop in July for I3. I just love the aluminum/carbon base. Guess the 550 kg weight difference is the reason for the consumption plus. Because ID3 is much better in cw (0.27 to 0.29 I3). Highway should be better in terms of higher speed. But EV buyers didn't really valued or value the carbon/alu design and its costs. As i heared, 2.8 billions Euro (2,8 Milliarden) were invested in developping the car and green plant but nobody really focused on this. In the newer BMW just a few parts remain carbon.

My 94ah i3 can easily drive longer on each charge than you managed in this one. However I only drive it in the north where we have to drive at 80 kph or less. I just bought a used BMW i3 94ah REX, as my first EV ever. I have always been tempted to buy an EV, largely because of your videos, and now I have done it. I was wondering about the Ionity price deal. Do you need a special subscription to get the low price? Or does the charger just recognise the vehicle as a BMW, and give you the low price? Anyone know how it works?

Special norway arrangement. In Germany Ionity costs you 79 Euro Cents with the I3. Just the more expansive models include Ionity with 32 Cents for the first year. I 3 Buyers Can book Ionity included (32 cents) for 13 Euro per Month. But as you pay with bmw card just 38 Cents on other stations(first year, later 4.95 per Month on top) , it s not really worth the higher price.

I know the comments suggesting that 90km/h would be better are wrong as you replied yourself but I've done a couple of calculations and think you might have saved 15minutes overall and a charge stop driving at 110km/h which is very much the speed I drive on long highway trips. 120km/h really is a bit fast for the i3, it's brick shape becomes very apparent above the UK 70mph speed limit and 120km/h is close to 75mph. It's certainly a mistake to fight against a strong headwind. On the heater problem, if you stop and restart the charge at 12% [on the 94Ah, not checked the % on the 120Ah] you should get the aux heater back - no good if there's a connection fee though. Finally, how on earth did you get the battery temperature up to 36C? The only time I ever got it over 30C was when it was 34C outside on the last hot day of summer - and as soon as I'd slowed down below 80kph it pumped down from 32C to 30.5C! It must be the 120km/h driving...?? Around town the BMS strongly resists going over 20C and last night driving 10km up one motorway stop at the speed limit it still cooled from 13C to 12.5C rather than increased. It's also possible you've identified a hint of rapidgating above 30C, but I'm yet to hear of anyone else noticing this, it certainly coldgates at freezing temperatures - my slow record low is 18kW!! Yup, some of the technology needs updating like a radar, blind spot warning, a heated steering wheel and 70-80kW charging up to 50% but with perhaps one final refresh before it gets retired I doubt they'll bother sadly. For anyone's interest, Tom Moloughney in New Jersey did a 120mph range test of the 120Ah i3 in the summer, which I think is useful as it sits between your 90 & 120km/h tests. Good work Bjorn. :)

I have no idea how anyone manages without a REx to be honest, it's a great car for zipping around a city, but half of any long journey will be spent charging, I've got a REx on mine, but don't like to use it unless there are no nearby charging points or if I'm in a hurry - I mean I might as well be driving an ICE car if I'm going to be relying on the REx that much. BMW really dropped the ball with that low capacity battery.

@@therealchayd I drive around 90-94 miles a day for work, 140-150 Kms and the i3 94 Ah Rex is doing by far the most miles compared to the Diesel the missus drives. It's saving me a lot compared to Diesel. It's a 2017 and now has just over 100,000 Kms with no notable loss of battery, compared to my 2015 Leaf which showed a lot more battery degradation at 90,000 when I traded it for the i3. I am very happy with the i3 94 ah battery life. On a long trip I got the choice, wait on a charge, which is fine if we want to stop for a meal or potentially have to wait at a busy charger or if the battery is cold as on any EV this can add significant time to the wait at a charger, not so with the Rex, just fire it up and continue, if you run out of fuel it takes 8 seconds to fill the tank which is good for 80-140 Kms depending on speed and conditions. If taking a weekend away etc and you have nowhere to plug in over night the battery could be quite cold next morning when you need to head to a DC charger, a cold battery can add significant charge time to any EV charge but not with the Rex, fire it up and be on your way when you want, then after around 30-45 mins the battery should be warm enough to allow max charge current, the Rex is really a fantastic idea and more electric cars should have this option even a small fuel cell in the future with the battery being the main source of power from the mains the fuel cell is there when you need it so you can continue your journey without having to stop for 30-50 mins each time. Why did BMW remove the Rex on the 120 Ah i3 ? because they were going to discontinue production of the i3 and they didn't want to pay for re-certification for the Rex again. BMW said it was because no one wanted the Rex and the range of the 120 Ah was good enough what BS.
