BMW is Selling Fully-Electric 3-Series in China for €24k 

What a beautiful car. New petrol 3 series are almost 50 000 euro in Europe lol. This is why competition is so important. China is making such good cars that Euro makers are now stressed and want to lower prices to remain competitive.

Wow this is just sad for us germans. The i3 starts at 40k €, which is by no means comparable to this electric 3 series. We are so behind

Feels like an act of desperation from the traditional auto makers. Just goes to show, its not just about being an EV, its more about bringing more capable and sophisticated tech to the table. In a few more years, Chinese cars are going to be even more technologically advanced, and the herd will be thinner. A lot thinner.

Chinese EV’s advantage is brought by the full industry ability of China so no country can replicate it at the moment. Maybe India in the future but at least for now, rejecting Chinese EV is rejecting near future auto technology with much more affordable price.

The car producers need a kick in the rear to innovate. Is the German industry in trouble? Yes. But by concluding it is done, I think people underestimate the industries capabilities.

Thanks for the interesting topic and well-explained apples-to-apples comparison. I agree that this isn't likely to occur in any other country, but it should. Oddly, I'm pleased that the legacy brands have been caught "Flat-footed" and must employ tactics such as protectionism to slow the inevitable. It's well documented how, in the early 90's, the U.S. allowed Chevrolet to actively delay the onset of EVs to bolster its profit from ICE vehicles. Like America's big three automotive manufacturers, European brands were happy to keep polluting the environment to maintain their hold on the market. China has proven along many industry fronts that competition, not protectionism, is the key to achieving innovation competencies and dominance. Though it pains me to say it, the nascent shift amongst economies is a necessary wake-up call for the countries engaging in protectionism, whether by the term overcapacity, national security, or the claim of unfair subsidies.

Where did you get the €24K price tag from? BMW’s Chinese website shows a €46K starting price for the i3.

I checked the price of a Zeekr 007 or whatever and it starts at 60k in germany😂😂 You got to import these yourself.

At first i thought 'wow! That's a steal!' and then you showed me the Zeekr 007. To me, the current gen 3 series is still the best looking saloon in the market (head to head with the Alfa Romeo Giulia) and the interior still look awesome (definitely more useful than the new buttonless design on the new gen X3) but the spec of 007 are miles ahead of the 3 series.

What is the purchase tax (sales tax) in China on both of these cars?

The reason why European cars are not as autonomous, is because it is simply not allowed here anyway. Besides Chinese autonomous driving is only on pre-mapped roads. Meanwhile the Chinese cars that do come to here to Europe have some of the worst, least reliable and shaky lane keep systems on our market... This BMW rides on a platform that is from 2018... well there you go. This is essentially a 2018 BMW with some bargain basement battery that BMW found somewhere 😂. This is basically their worst EV on the market right now. Even in the EU they don't sell this.

Power of competition

I'm in the market for a new EV in Europe but after seeing this video I don't want to buy anything. I'll just keep my 4 series Diesel a little longer then. That being said, I don't believe the range numbers of the Zeekr one bit. BMW is known to build very efficient cars and also EVs. And the BMW infotainment might not look like the newest thing around but it is functional and many people underestimate functionality in car interiors nowadays. So I'd give the Zeekr a shot but I'd probably lean heavily towards the BMW here.

This is a good electric 3-Series. It's clearly struggling to be competitive with vehicles like Zeekr's 007 since it looks quite outdated and the tech is not so great. Very intriguing video!

In terms of development cycles, this BMW is an old car when looking at both software and the underlying plattform. It was developed before the big EV push in China and they got caught almost empty handed. With that being said, I'm not too worried because the Neue Klasse plattform will fix these issues and it will also be an extremely cool design (at least judging by the concept cars). That's also my biggest gripe with Chinese EVs. You can't fault them for their software, EV tech or how they drive but my god they all look so damn generic inside and out because there is zero design or brand legacy. Doesn't matter whether it's XPeng, Zeekr, NIO or whatever other Chinese EV brand, they all look like AI generated aero blobs and hiring western designers hasn't helped. This Zeekr interior could be directly transferred into a NIO and it would not feel out of place. It will be interesting to see how this all pans out in the future. Brands like NIO or Zeekr have very competitive cars but the 20.000 cars they currently sell each month in China are far too less and like all Chinese brands their car sales in Europe and the US are abysmal (even before the new tarrifs) which means they are still making huge losses each quarter. German legacy brands on the other hand are still highly profitable but if they lose out on the EV race in China their profits will take a massive hit and it will also make them more vunerable in their home markets. So the big question to me is: Who will figure it out first? Brands like BMW selling EVs at a large scale and profitably in China or Chinese brands managing to sell cars globally to reach profitable volumes. I think my money is still on the first.

Cars could be a lot cheaper without the bells and whistles. I'd rather pay less and not have self driving and I don't give a dang about the infotainment system.

To be honest, I think BMW is behind in tech and just want to catch the EV band wagon. They just find a way to put batteries without using a proper EV platform. The extended wheelbase is also for them to put more batteries to it. If I were to go for EV, I will choose the Zeekr.

China is a global leader in manufacturing, and making a last-gen car in partnership with BMW will not compromise the engineering or interior prestige of the 3-series(which really isn’t so advanced to begin with honestly). I feel discussion should revolve around why BMW is so so so behind, and why does the usa/eu so strongly pretend chinese car market doesn’t exist and we don’t know how badly us/eu customers are treated

A very good advertisment for Zeeker but let me tell you what. I'll take a bmw over a Chinese brand everyday,no doubt . The Chinese brands are cheap as they look and feel cheap interior or engine wise, and unfortunately in order for Europeans to survive such as Mercedes they're becoming more Chinese looking ,take a look at the interior quality of benz and that's a shame

With the much lower standard of living of Chinese workers, the lack of union, and government subsidy, there is just no way for EU and US companies to compete.
