WIth thanks to : AGA N62 TOOL RENTAL SERVICE for some video content.
It isn't inevitable that you are going to have problems with Valve Stem Seals, the Coolant Transfer Pipe, Oil Leaks from everywhere and Harsh Gear Changes with the N62 Engine.
You can avoid these problems if you follow the advice here - don't leave it until you are puffing out smoke and leaking coolant, it may be too late. If you act before these problems show themselves then you can avoid getting them altogether

I had all but sworn off these generations of the bmw v8, you single handedly restored my desire to give it one more shot with a proper taken care of one. My wife's favorite cars ever were her e60 545i and 550i but eventually we had all the common issues you talked about and spent thousands upon thousands repairing them. It's nice to know you can make them long term reliable vehicles as they are an absolute dream to own.

Amazing knowledge well put into a great video. Thank you for that! I'm currently halfway through fixing a 17 years old BMW 750i and unfortunately, I am noticing most of the usual N62 issues. Excellent video Timm, I preached the people all the time in the BMW chat forms that I'm in, not to follow BMW's recommended 15,000 mi oil changes. 6k -8k max. Interesting point that you made about people needing to change the oil yearly if they drive below 6,000 to 8,000 miles a year. Great advice! I bought my 2005 645 with 79k miles, with major oil leaks, got those all fixed, plus did a transmission oil service and seals, it now has 93,000 miles and running strong, no puffs of Blue smoke, so luckily whoever on the car before me took good care of it, the 2nd owner didn't want, or didn't know how to fix the oil leaks...but I did. I love my car!

Excellent video Tim. Another sad issue with the 650i is the cost of body damage repairs after an accident. The aluminum components are very expensive to fix leading insurance companies to just scrap the car and paying you the low wholesale price. That said, if you do need parts these vehicles are starting to show up regularly in salvage yards. Although many of these places think they are BMW dealers and believe all BMW owners a very rich. Also mention to everyone to change power steering fluid, and replace brake fluid regularly.

Hi Tim, on the gearbox, I spent perhaps a few years trying to pin point the harsh shifts. As you mentioned oil, filter and mechatronic seals are crucial to change however the biggest difference I saw was with a software update for the EGS. All the clunking and shifts just disappeared immediately. Also the solenoids have a high failure rate and so changing just the shift solenoids while you have the valve body out is also a good idea.

Dear Tim! Thank you for your detailed videos and advice. This helps us e63/e64 lovers a lot to keep their car alive for a long time. For me, as a non-native English speaker and non-mechanic, it is very difficult to get a good overview and to understand everything exactly. Could you imagine creating a maintenance plan that says exactly when, after what mileage and with which oils, seals and spare parts which work is to be carried out? We could then give this document to our workshop. That would help a lot and I would be happy to pay for it. Is there a chance? Thanks very much!

My car is on 103K miles. It's always had regular servicing including oil changes every year with the Castrol FST (changed on time and not waiting for the iDrive to recommend it.) I've also been gadding the Wynn's in recent years. That's kept my valve stem seals in good shape with no leaks (yet!). Would you advise getting the timing chain tensioners replaced as a safety measure though, or is that going too far? Thanks as always.
@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation
@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation 2 года назад
My pleasure Doc! The chain tensioners don't usually need changing, they are very robust compared to those on the M62. The only time I would change them is if there was varnish everywhere in the engine - but if the engine has been looked after then no need.

I guess you could have added an injector cut switch so you could spin the starter then turn on the fuel. Sounds like they were emulating the old M30 cold start injector idea which worked perfectly well on the iron block engines.

I've a question: I'm about to look on a 2007 BMW 650 where everything looks good except some of the service intervals made on the car. it's serviced with new oil -08, -09, -10, -11, -12, -13, -14, -17 and -20. Would you consider it be a major thing to look out for? The total mileage on the car is 56.000 miles. The car has been driven 5000 miles between the oilchanges -14 to -17 and 4000 miles -17 to -20. Bloody legend. Always so useful and clear. Wonder if you’ll have the time to answer, but I’m having trouble with startup noise on an M62 engine. Is there a valve somewhere in the oil filter housing that stops oil draining away when the car is not in use? Very hard to find the part if it does exist! No photos in where it lives or anything as far as I can see! Keep up the excellent work. I See you drive your E31 past my work in Petersfield occasionally :)
@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation
Thanks James, where do you work in Petersfield? Start-up noise could be a few things - leaking 1-way valve in the canister, knackered chain-tensioner or dying Vanos units (if you have an M62TUB). I show the 1-way valve in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8qBfJSINMJM.html
@jamesjoe9437
@jamesjoe9437 Год назад
@@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation Yes I think we’re narrowing it down to the canister valve…It’s my dads car and he has made an ingenious temporary solution where a switch under his seat turns off the fuel pump so that when he turns the ignition, the oil pump has time to get the oil everywhere before he then turns the fuel pump on again and it starts with no noise. Trying to find a new oil filter housing assembly now. I’m a music teacher at Churcher’s College. My dad had an Alpina B12 (E38 and E31 actually) back in the day so I love those things!

Hey man, great video! I have a e70 with the N62 and I have 300,000km on her! At around 140 I started using 5w30 and after idling for a few minutes it would start smoking so I switched to 5w40 and it fixed that and fast track to 260 I used a engine flush fluid and after that it smoked so bad after almost every start after it cooled down. Seen this video at around 300 and never thought that would of had played a part of it so ordered a set and replaced them and like you said after 400km or so the start up smoke went away! Thank you for the video, sometimes it’s hard to find good DYI vids on RU-vid for these engines!

Thank you SO MUCH for your incredibly informative and helpful videos!! (SO glad I found you!) I have a 2000 740iL and a 2006 650i convertible. The 650i is showing "multiple leaks" and my local garage said I have to "replace or fix" the coolant transfer pipe -- quoting ~$4,000 USD to "fix" with stent. I paid $13,500 for it in 2017 and have only paid about $3,000 in total repairs since then (+ oil changes consistently each year, using only synthetic oil...) I got it with 89k miles and now have 103k miles. It's still very clean with only unnoticeable minor scratches on hood and front bumper, otherwise flawless and everything works great... I really want to keep it, but do you think it would be a mistake to pay for repair & keep?

I’m so glad you’re defending the n62. It gets nothing but hate in the car community, but the reality is most of it’s issues are due to neglect and poor maitenance. It’s not a Honda Civic, and it can’t be treated like it. If you take care of it, it will take care of you. That’s what I’ve learned during my years of BMW ownership. These cars are really a steal for the driving experience they provide.

Drove an N62B44 (545i) for 100,000 km. The car would start in the open loop but not go to closed loop by itself. The solution was starting, driving 100m, stop and restart the car. In almost every occasion, the engine would run in closed loop then. The engine already had the known coolant leaking problem (rubber O ring wearing out causing leaks; impossible to resolve financially) but it did not get worse. Refilling coolant every 4-6 months was sufficient. It would sometimes blow some smoke upon driving away after idling for more than a minute. But this was occasionally. BMW = oil leaks. Valve cover, other areas. It's a marriage, those two. Gear changes were rough when cold, but nice once warmed up. I never had the gearbox flushed. Now driving a B58. It's more modern, faster and efficient (and no restarting needed), but I do miss that V8. It was worth the trouble.

Timm, your video has left me with a few questions. I bought my '06 650 with 73,000 miles late last fall and after storing it for the winter, changed the oil this Spring with LiquiMoly Mycogen plus a pint of Ceratec. I was convinced to use 5W40 due to the age and mileage on the engine. Was that a mistake? I see you're using 0W30. Can you use Wynn's and Forte at the same time? And with having the Ceratec already in, should I wait until the next oil change? I only have 2000 miles since the change. And how do you know if you have genuine BMW coolant? Thanks!!!
@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation
@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation 3 года назад
You will be fine with 5W40 - I use 0W30 to lessen the valve noise on the over-run. No idea if you can combine multiple additives - probably no one else will know either! As far as Coolant, you can't really tell, so best to drain and refill it needs changing every three years or so anyway

Its got 93k miles and a fairly decent service history except for in the last few years and that concerns me. Now I know if the coolant is green = bad. Nice video, Tim. I bought a 2007 550i e60 with the N62. Slowly started leaking from one spot after the other. First the vacuum pump seal, then the valve covers (both), then the oil pan and last week the alternator bracket. Exactly like you said, the crack on the alternator bracket made me loose 4L in about 20 minutes. Definitely not a job I ever want to do again. I have 1 harsh gear change on the automatic 6 speed gearbox from ZF. It's from 1st to 2nd gear. All the others are quite smooth. Now 275.000km on it and according to the service book last done at 200k. Would you say the mechatronic seal needs replaced together with a gearbox oil change? Is that also for the automatic gearbox from ZF?

Great advice Tim! I’ve owned a 2004 645ci for about 6 yrs now and 48k miles (bought it at 70k miles now it’s about 118k ). Two other proactive maintenance fixes I recommend on older models 6 series...one is the upper radiator hose ($95 USD) which will likely come apart at a not so ideal time and leave you stranded. The second is the right and left side Crank Case Vent Valve Breather Hoses ($59 USD for the set). Especially if you currently have the older version Y pipe that connects both sides at the center. This hose gets dry rot and brittle from the heat and will split and crack causing major misfires across all cylinders due to the vacuum leak. These preventative repairs are a must do as well if one plans to keep their N62 in good order for the duration of ownership. Cheers!

Jesse Salmi similar happened to me a few weeks back. Spent the morning detailing the car, headed out on a road trip with the Mrs.. Got on the interstate and accelerated hard to cross lanes and lost power. Windshield was freckled with water droplets so I knew I blew a hose. Exited the interstate and found the top radiator hose split in half at the plastic connection. Luckily I had a few assorted hose clamps in the boot. No tools though...so used the wife’s tweezers to tighten the clamp. Let the car cool down roadside. Then limped a few miles to the auto parts store to refill the coolant enough to get me home an additional 2 miles. Ordered the new OEM hose on Amazon and replaced it in 10 minutes. It was a crap day but it could have been a lot worse...better yet it could have been prevented had I replaced the hose at 100k miles. Ps...small metal hook tool and extra long flathead screw driver to pop the clips made the job a piece of cake.

@@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation I have taken photos of two different U-shaped deflection rails that I've replaced on an E38 and E39 M62TU and M62TUB engines. The 740i had a small piece of plastic lost from deflection rail when I replaced it at 100K miles from an engine run mostly on regular petroleum oil (from the previous owner). That rail was definitely in need of replacement since it was at the beginning stage of breaking up. For the E39 540i I ran on Mobil 1 High Mileage synthetic since I bought it (at least 1/2 of its life I estimate) and it showed hints of deterioration of the plastic rail at 120K miles. Both examples showed highest deterioration at the bottom of the U-shaped apex where I think stress from the chain is highest. The other two rails showed some surface wear but no hint of damage. I thought you might find this information of interest, Timm. Anyway, I believe heating and cooling cycles do take their toll on what is a naturally brittle insert used on the deflection rail as well as the quality and regular changing of of the motor oil used.
