How to rebuild noisy differential from BMW 118d.
If you have whining noise while driving, especially when you release throttle, than you will definitely need to replace bearings in your differential. The video shows procedure of bearings and oil seals replacement with addition of refreshing housing and rear cover
When doing that, it is essential to tighten pinion nut properly. Otherwise pinion bearings won't last long. Not many people know exact values and those who know won't share them. But we do, so here is torque spec for all 3 BMW differential sizes:
- 168L (ball bearing) - 0.2Nm - 0.4Nm
- 188L (ball bearing) - 0.4Nm - 0.6Nm
- 215L (ball bearing) - 0.6Nm - 0.8Nm
We have complete reparation sets available, which include all parts necessary for rebuild:
1x small pinion bearing
1x large pinion bearing
2x side bearing
1x pinion oil seal
2x side oil seal
1x crush sleeve

Great video. I do these a bit differently. I press the bearing cones in and then fit the pinion and bearings in plus the prop flange BEFORE fitting the seal. I tighten the pinion nut up to compress the spacer until there is 95% zero free play but the pinion still spins freely. Without the seal fitted you can feel a minute amount of play. Then mark the nut to the pinion, remove the flange, fit the seal and refit the flange, tightening the nut to where it was before but fractionally more. You can do these without a press (I don't have one) using long thin chisels to remove the cones. Be careful not to mark the diff casing or the shim. The big one is very tight. I get the casing nice and hot before fitting the big cone that I leave in ice cold water. I find the worst bearings for wear are the Japanese KOYO brand, very bad. The side circlips are also shims and must be marked side to side. These days I never replace the diff side bearings to keep costs down - they are rarely worn like the pinion bearings. I use EP90/140 synthetic oil as well - the original oil is too thin, the reason these diffs wear out. I've also found that many diffs only need the small end pinion bearing replacing, and that the big one is still serviceable, even on very noisy diffs.

When I first watched this thought he used the angle grinder to basically cut the bearing seat off, nope cut a slot to place a chisel so would have a solid ground to smatch it off ,very very much so impressed.

works great for wheel bearing races stuck on hub surfaces as well, (can be a bit more difficult with thicker bearing material) cut down almost through the race and then chisel to split it in half, race slides right off then.

You should mark which output flange was which when disassembling. Same with half shafts. The splines have been stressed in one direction during use and can fracture if replaced on opposite side of the diff as the stresses are reversed.

I found accross bimmerforums values ranging from 1.5 to 2.5 Nm for new rebuids and 1.0 to 1.5Nm for my differential after run-in. These values are almost double yours. Hello, I have one question - I almost replaced the differential on the bmw 118d 122hp 2007 M package in service and they put the bmw 120d differential instead (since it doesn't break down like they said) and I noticed that my car in the same RPM has now less speed then it had . For example, in the sixth gear, the speed was 195 km / h at 3,000 rpm, and now it develops 180 km / h at 3,500 rpm or less. Is it differential problem and which should be put to be as it was?? My questions is why You don't change teflon washers located under the small gears "satellites" In my experience, it is these washers that are responsible for the play that forms in the drive axle, the bearings last 300 to 500 thousand, unless the car was drifted by a young driver. Regards

Hello what dynometric force should be used to tighten the rear nut???
@RacingDiffs
@RacingDiffs 9 месяцев назад
You tighten the rear nut until you get 0.6 - 0.8 Nm of torque resistant of the pinion (without carrier inside).

@RacingDiffs

The small pinion bearing.
@tempest411

How could you expect this to work properly when the gear mesh was not even looked at? Typically when changing the bearings you will have altered the relationship between the pinion and ring gear, requiring a change in shims to insure they mesh together properly. The process as I have seen it involves marking compound on the gears, rotating them together, and observing how the teeth contact. Adjustment may have to be made in the fore-aft position of the pinion, or the shimming of the ring gear.
@RacingDiffs
@RacingDiffs Год назад
Bearings are made in 0.001mm tolerance. So if you return adjustment shims to their original place, there won't be any difference.

I rebuilt a bmw front diff, everything seems to be fine (not fitted yet) but i'm wondering why there is a spring plate/preload washer under a side bearing? When i put the cases together, i think i felt a resistance when screwing in the bolts. Could it be the washer/bearing fitting in? All assembled it seems to spin quite nicely by hand, set the pinion nearly to the same mark with a new crush sleeve as it was, as a starter.
@RacingDiffs

This shim creates optimal preload on bearings, so you don't neet to adjust it by yourself. Actually the clever thing.
