That bike belonged to my Father and we serviced it every 6k/12k miles as per the BMW service schedule, all oils changed, filters replaced , valve adjustments and throttle bodies balanced. If you keep doing that it will go forever!

Hi Stuart , Yes it will for sure mate. Nice people your mum and dad . I am really pleased with the bike, there is a serious wobble on the back paralever which I need to done asap...not anyones fault - just something that needs doing for a bike of this age. Thats why I thought it was a issue with the rear tires. Lovely bike- I am really pleased. I balanced the throttle bodys - the right was pulling more than the left but nothing excessive. And the choke (idle) wasn't working but pulled apart the box and retensioned and all is good now. Cheers

It's great to have a new bike that you can do things to without spending a lot of money and not worry that its not perfect. Love the older bikes, so much more interesting!

I'm really pleased to hear the enthusiasm in your voice, and that you've decided to keep the R . It looks a very sound bike . The telelever front end is a real plus on these bikes.

Seems a lovely little bike that's been well cared for. The small areas of concern you point out are truly minor. Even more so when you consider the price. I think it's a pretty little bike. Have fun.

Thanks Louis- Yes they are minor- well apart from the Paralever pins which is giving me a 4mm wobble in the rear wheel.. when that is done I will be pleased.

The more I see it, the more I like it ER :-) Regarding oil. My R1150RT (50,000 miles) was a bit noisy from the top end with the modern oil that the dealer put in it. I bought some 20/50 "Classic" oil from Halfords and swapped it out with that. It loved it! and it ran much smoother and quieter from then on. It's in a dark green can with pictures of tractors and machinery on it. I also recommend replacing the clutch and brake fluids when you can. The clutch on mine felt like new with fresh fluid in it. It's really easy to do. The brown stuff that came out told me all I needed to know about it being time. The lower fins which you pointed out which are flaking - I'd get some high temperature gloss black for the lower part of the engine. It'll look ok and be a lot more durable then silver on those bits.

Good info there Thanks. To my knowledge I don't have a hydraulic clutch...I could be wrong though. Loads I want to do to it. The paralever pins are first, I have a 4-5mm wobble in the rear wheel. Hence why I thought it was the tires. Thanks for watching : )

RAIN!! Blimey, get out the ACF 50 sharpish.......Actually, a great project for you and looks to be in pretty good condition for its age. The older/retro style bike also brings another dimension to your motorcycling as well as to your channel. Good to share in your enthusiasm. Cheers.

@@paulrollinson1305 o sorry, I was being a dumpty. Yes I use the screen alot but take it off when I'm filming where I can because it gives the viewer a better picture rather than looking through the screen. 👍📹

@@exeterrider I have the can here: Autotek Professional: VHT Aluminium. It states up to 500degC! 😓. I know, it was the same with me. Many would say it's not a good looking bike and to me, it was and is. Just wish I hadn't of sold.

Bought mine from Norwich BMW 12 years ago with 17000 miles on the clock ..now just passed 65000 with no major problems, done all my own servicing, just a tip release the tie wraps from all the cables under the instrument panel and between the front forks they are bunched up tight from the factory and can fail if constantly steering lock to lock say on the driveway, give them a fiddle see if the front headlight goes out!. And maybe consider fitting an upgraded left hand chain tensioner .Only other issue can be the rear pivot bearings..(next to the gaiter on the rear drive) check with bike on centre stand and rock rear wheel gently at 3 and 6 oclock position should be no movement. I have pushed mine for hours on occasions with no issues or leaks stick with it nothing will break.

Hi Colin. Good to hear from another owner. I have a video on changing the paralever bearings and also the cam Chain Tensioner. I had seized driveshaft aswell which complecated things. Check out those vids. Thanks for watching 🙏🍻👍

I have a 97 it has 24k miles and it runs great. There is a oilhead mechanic in Ellsworth, Maine and he is a genius! I run 40 psi in the tires and they feel much better. They chop at lower pressures. Best of luck.

Try tin foil scrunched up for the chrome works a treat, even Henry Cole recommends it.

I like it. Something a bit different. I’m all for progress etc and like modern bikes but I much prefer dial speedo and tachometer. Much easier to read quickly imo.

Whiring sound not an issue probably alternator drive belt front of engine not fuel pump or filter. Run on Brisk plugs better than any other for boxer engines.

Ello mate, ahh OK, it is really loud though and comes from the tank. The mic didn't pick it up too well. I have a alternater belt here ready to fit which is on the to do list 👍

I actually wish BMW still did a bike like this, something a bit lighter and more economical than the 1200/1250s but still with a shaft drive.

I don't understand why these days a bike like this should be called a "little bike". I am from that generation when a 250 was a bike on which one could go touring. It is a lovely bike and is all the bike you should ever need. I like the dials, handlebars etc. A very nice bike and the guy saying he had done 500 miles or 900 miles since the last MOT is hardly a big issue on a bike which will last for hundreds of thousand miles if looked after well. Boxers are fantastic engines and really enjoyable to ride.

Yes I wasn't making a big issue of it - just saying. I think there are small and large bikes these day's. You can tour on anything at the end of the day : ) I don't class this as a small bike - quite the opposite actually .

Hi I am thinking about going back to an R850R. Had one few years ago. Ive just recently sold a R1100rs which was getting a bit heavy for me. I seem to recall the R850 appreciably lighter. Good video.

@@exeterrider when was that video shot, couple of years ago 2021 or so?. So you've still got the R850?. I've owned 8 beemers and I think I might be hooked. I relate to the falling in and out of love with them...mostly love but I sometimes think id like a change. I was looking at a Ducati St but I don't have the same feeling of confidence in the reliability area. That's just a perception but for my budget BMWs are so solid.

@lefthandyandy yeap a couple of years I think. I still have mine. I love it but it kinda puts me in edge all the time, parts are silly money and they are very rustic which I like but also again it's kinda unpredictable which again pa me on edge. It's staying for now though. They do look good 👍🍻

I go to the local BMW main agent for servicing of my K1300GT - they are about 20% cheaper than Triumph were for my 1215 Trophy.

I have just bought a nother R850R had one of the first ones started off with the R100R Mistec buterfull bike but it would not stay in tune, they had it more than I did it was a folty sell in battery but local BMW dealer was not up to standard. So I had their demo R850R but that started getting folty 😢 but I have now bought a 96 with 31,000 on the clock 🤞. As for Tyers the last British tyer company is Avon the best, On the market.🌹

I had the 1100 great bike,I hated the metzler too,lean over a bit and it falls off the tread very scary,traded it for a pan European in 2006 big mistake.

Looking better already! Are you going to remove those 'screen support stays' or whatever they are? They look like they could inflict a nasty injury in the event of an 'incident, think that would have been my first job to be honest. Not quite sure why some folks think every bike needs to do 150mph and rev to 12K rpm horses for coarses and all that.

Thanks mate. I didn'y get a fuel pump in the end . it seemed to be OK....infact the whole bike is running quite well at the moment ,but it still can be very temperamental

How is the weight compared to the NC? Do you feel a difference in handling with it being more top heavy compared to the NC?

The NC feels a smaller bike in comparison. But infact the BMW isnt much heavier than the NC. The BMW holds its weight low down but yes you certinly feel more weight but it's not excessive.

@@exeterrider Will do. Tyres will have a MMYY date on them, if they are old they may have perished a bit causing your probs.

@@exlibrex ahh good point, it's definitely the patalever bolts though, the rear wheel wobbles about 4mm both ways! I have the parts, just need time to fit them 👍

Glad you are liking the bike.......just a few cosmetics to sort out. Try using tin foil on the front shock as I had the same on mine and used that......it worked quite well. These engines are torquey and quite lazy, but you'll soon get used to it and will be "making good progress" before ya know it. Ride safe. Steve

Known as the. BMW telelever suspension. Its brilliant, basically it acts like a car wishbone. Great for handling. You should try one 👍😉

Hi, enjoyed the video. I am going to look at one of these on Saturday. 97 reg with 32,000. i have a royal enfield classic 500 but would like to step up a bit. New rider but want to go a bit further easier. Live on isle of wight. Also 29 inch leg so low is good. Any advice would be welcome.

Hi John, Do you know Geoff on the island with the RE Interceptor? I think the 97 regs had the different dashboards right? Not a lot to point out really, just check for service history etc . Mine was a winter hack I think so there were a few bits wrong that I have had to sort out including the drive shaft being seized up....have you seen that video? They have quite a lot of character but parts are at BMW prices sadly....check out motorworks if you do need any parts. Stay in contact mate, welcome to the club

@@exeterrider Hi, had a good look at the bike, looks ok not mint but ok. Noticed slight weep on front master cylinder, which Chris Harris has a video on. I have pointed this out to seller and will go back next Saturday for another look . Seat was on middle setting and just a tad high for me so seller has lowered for me to try. Seems to run fine 32,000 miles and will take £2,000. Not fully there yet, will let you know. Has full panniers as well.

@@exeterrider Hi, i picked up the R850R today and as some one said, it is Vun Da Bar in the twistys. I to have got slight pitting on the chrome and use shiny sinks which does not scratch like auto sol realy good on all the delicut bits.

Thanks, I have a purple panda Mike, so will get a media mod to connect it, the sound you get is really good as well as the great video quality. These GoPros are expensive now but I guess you get what you pay for.

@@stevethorndale231 yes you will find alot of issues with videos freezing and alike. Although when it works it's good, there is alot of fundamentals wrong too im dad to say.

Moi aussi mon ami. Ils sont si bien construits. Ma seule préoccupation avec eux est que les pièces de rechange en cours de route peuvent être très coûteuses. En plus ils sont aussi forts qu'un bœuf !
