So I know this is longer than my usual review videos but this bike deserves it. If you stick it out to the end let me know in the comments and I'll give you a virtual high five :) Also let me know what you thought of the review and would you buy a S1000XR!!
Sorry I never saw this comment, youtube is awful at telling you about replies! It's just so polished, I love the FZ1, great bike too but really couldn't hold a candle to the S1000XR
Great review. I'm partial to the XR, I have 15k miles on my 2016. It has been my favorite bike ever! It still rides like new and no problems. I live in California and it is perfect for the twisty costal roads to our mountain canyons. I've done 9-10 hour days on it and was happy to jump on it again the next day. We get to lane split at speed as well as filter and it works great. It isn't a bike for beginning riders, but it is easy to ride! From a fellow big rider, thanks for the review!
Thank you! Haha you have a lot more saddle time in than me so. Honestly that was a huge takeaway for me after I dropped it back to my Uncle. I'd been out in lovely weather all day, on all types of roads and was fresh as a daisy. Not a single ache or pain. I must get over to California to ride there one day it looks awesome! Lane splitting at speed would be interesting :D Agreed, definitely not for beginners but for someone with experience it's perfect and eat :) Thanks for watching!
No thank you for watching :) They're bloody excellent bikes. I wish I could just pick a direction and head off myself, I can't wait until they end this lockdown
I only started this channel in Jan 2019, I've tried to develop as I moved forward all the time. So yes it's a different format and I hope to keep evolving them as I go. Thank you also I'm glad you enjoyed it :)
Great review! I own an HP 2018 and I also love this bike! It’s amazing, in power delivery, handling, stability...downside are just fuel consumption (because it’s impossible to ride it at low and constant throttle...) and some plastic noise for vibrations. Brakes are powerful, but response is not immediate as one would expect from that system.
Oh very nice! I'd be pretty happy to own one at some stage 😁😁 haha yeah I can imagine it gets thirsty if you use it every day :) I found the brakes good, but then again it was the newest bike I'd ever ridden, that said I'd agree the response wasn't instant bite but I feel that may be to do with the suspension geometry also.
Bloody gorgeous bike man, fair sound of the uncle to let you mess around on it! Only started and you sound much too happy... it's only a matter of time before you join the 1000cc master race... It really does have everything someone would need on a bike. Self cancelling indicators work so well on BMWs that they cancel before anyone even sees them in the first place. Nice little fly-bys at the end by the way! It sounds really well for a standard exhaust! Great review as always man! Sorry for the late view, catching up since I'm back now from the Holidays haha! :)
Ah he's dead sound to be fair. I didn't think he'd let me just whizz off for 3+ hours on it! Ah stop it's different, the only thing is I dunno would I ever use that bike 100% whereas I can use the Fazer to the absolute max of what it can do :P :D :D :D :D They're indicators are too fast at cancelling most of the time aye :D Thanks! I want to do them all the time now they're fun :P Doesn't sound as good as the Magna tho :P Gracias amigo. You're under no obligation to watch anyway no apology necessary !!
Great review mate. I’ bought the first edition of this bike in 2015. I agree with everything you say here. I’m thinking of buying a 2nd new one. This S1000XR can get you into trouble. Greetings from Australia 🇦🇺
Thanks :) it's good to know I didn't miss too much then that'd pop up over a longer term review! It definitely could get you into trouble easily :) I would totally buy one if I could! thanks for tuning in from over yonder!
I bought the same bike last week and absolutely love it. 2019 in triple black. looking forward to a trip to Kerry in the summer where my mother is from.
I honestly still want to borrow that bike every time I see it :D Ah Kerry is my favorite spot to ride around I've loads of videos done down that way too. There and West Cork are just brilliant for spins. Best of luck with it!
Great review and superb bike. I’m thinking about buying one and this was the most informative review I’ve seen.. I’m a bit smaller than you.. maybe 188cm and 100kg but can’t think it would be too difficult to manoeuvre.
Thank you! :) its a fantastic bike. Well that means a lot thanks for letting me know :) you should have no issue handling it at all at that height. It obviously top heavy with its height but when at neutral position its light as a feather.
Man I totally understand what you meant in the beginning. I took my bike in for service and they put me on that bike while I waited. Mistake because I loved it so much. I only miss the TFT display, if that was an option it would be hard to not trade in for it. The video went very fast for the length didn't seem like 25 minutes 👍. I like the red myself, but that color and even the blue are sharp as well. Nice outro lol sounds good going past
It's almost certain that BMW will announce a refreshed XR at EICMA the beginning of Nov which will have the LCD like the GS and RR . I am so excited about this bike I may put down a deposit before I even get a chance to sit on it! 😆
@@agisler87 Being honest I don't think you'd regret it :D This gen is so so good I can't see them going backwards. I'll have to try plant myself in the seat of the newer one at some stage to get a spin on it :)
Thank you good sir. And thanks I do my best to be impartial cus usually all is in my head is I want to win the lotto 😂😂 sure look I'll call up sometime :)
Good review. I am the same size as you and just purchased a new S1000XR HP 3 months ago after only ever having superbikes. Just been to Austria and back with my partner on pillion , Shad full hard luggage, loved it. The bike is awesome. Its superbike quick, the quickshifter is great and the ergonomics for us big guys are superb. The handling is sublime once the bike is moving and it feels really nimble.
Thanks Phil! Oh now that is definitely a trip I'd like to make one day on a bike like th XR. From the short amount of time I got to spend with it I absolutely loved it! Yeah I really felt that moving through bends etc was effortless the bike felt so light!
I loved this bike, had one until 2 weeks ago when it was stolen! I’m taller as well and its great and comfortable. Screen can still be taller. Dash is old fashioned and it does get a bit boring because its so easy. Need to be over 8k for the excitement and scare factor to kick in. Couple of vids on my channel about it.... never got to do track day on it sadly
Ah I'm sorry to hear that! Any news on where it is or do you have any hope of getting it back? I haven't been on a more all round comfy bike since tbh. Haha the speed will do that alright 😂 will you at least get another from insurance or what's the story there?
Great review. I’m considering an XR upgrading from my F850GS. As you said at the end of your review the thing holding me back is the nervousness of the power. I’m looking at 2018 model for all riding. Think I might now take one for a test spin. Cheers
Thanks! Yeah it really is an incredibly capable bike! Apparently so! I doubt we'll see anything this year but I would be madly interested to see an XR with the new RR's styling too. I'd imagine it'd sway a lot of people!!
@@TheGorillaBiker According to Motorcycle.com we will get the refresh for the 2020 model year. 😁 www.google.com/amp/s/www.motorcycle.com/mini-features/carb-filings-confirm-updates-for-2020-bmw-s1000xr.html/amp
Great review! But I’m biased to the XR and marmite. :) My only suggestion would be to take it on the Wild Atlantic Way! Got to visit your wonderful country recently but by car.. subscribed for your scenery. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
Thanks Matt!! Haha I also like both :P I'd love to but I dunno would the uncle let me away with that...we'll see! I'd love to buy one eventually. I just put up another video wall of a section of the wild Atlantic way! You'll have to come back and do it by bike man it's so good by bike :) Thanks for watching :)
I bought a new one in 2018. After 18 months I swapped for mt10. Soon realised my mistake, yam is a good bike but not a patch on the xr. I'm now back on a just bought triple black 600 miler
The XR is just all round excellent, after riding both I honestly think I'd have the MT10 first just because it's a bit more raw! Ah lovely, the triple black is a lovely colour scheme! :)
My 2015 K1300 R has a quickshifter standard, wouldn't own a bike without one now. I like this bike, it would want to be REAL good for me to trade The Beast on one but I will test ride it.
I've been considering putting the power commander one on to my bike I liked that on so much, I probably won't but that's the impression it made :) It's an amazing bike, definitely test ride one anyway :) That said I think the K1300R is a better looking bike, they're awesome!
@@TheGorillaBiker still have the same bike 2018 s1000xr blue.i was lucky to just get a speeding ticket not a reckless driving because cop clocked me at 120mph lol
You said brakes are not so good? Damn it's the best brakes that I have ever touched! The bike is phenomenal, I think the coolest that I have ever ridden so far.
@@TheGorillaBiker Oh sorry, I understood you a bit incorrectly) You said then XR gives you that braking confidence, and I completely agree with you here. Soon 2020 model will come up, really interesting what they could do better except new engine and LED lights. Perhaps tank could be a little bit bigger, XR likes to eat fuel. I don't know if the new engine has that vibrations as that one has, when I had a test ride I can say that on 2019 model there were some vibrations, but they are manageble. But main thing is the prices on old ones could drop a bit.
Haha no need to apologise :) Absolutely I can't wait to see what they come out with! I imagine it will look quite a bit different, I would assume they'll match it up with the new S1000RR on styling. A big tank would be great so long as they keep the balance as good as it is, the bike feels so good all the time in it's current form. Haha when used ones drop in price it'll make a lot of people happy :) Thanks for watching and commenting!
I never noticed any while I was riding it, I think it's one of those things that grow legs a bit, it can also be fixed with heavier bar end weights from what I've read.
He it's John the Honda guy, i couldn't own that here in Virginia USA there isn't enough room to ride it like an F1 car on the street. I will stick to my 919 and even it's really too much. I'm 55 maybe it's time hor a Hornet 600 but hard to hind here had em in 05 and 06 only. Pooh
Welcome back! You don't need to ride it like an F1 car, it's also just a really capable bike! Did you not see the roads I was riding on :P It was just fine on borderline trails :) Did anyone in the Uk reply to you? You'll definitely get one :)
You can change riding modes on the move, press the mode button until you get the mode you want, then close the throttle completely to select that mode. Means you're not stopping to change modes but the button is located there to avoid you hitting it accidentally, which is good cause going from Rain mode to Dynamic Pro in the wet without realising it would be minus craic. We did a comparison video 3 years ago for the RR vs the XR, check it out if you get time: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aCQJZIKf_d0.html They're a phenomenally capable machine, it's like the designers sat down and had to design something for shite Irish roads but that was still fast as fuck.
Oh I know you can, I did it later on in the video, I just found the button positioning uncomfortable/awkward is all, I said the same in a review I did on the Zero DS. Yeah accidentally changing mode would be fairly crap so that's a solid feature in fairness!! I'll check it out later definitely :) Yeah I have to say now since I rode it my left kidney has been in serious discussions with me about keeping his position. There's a solid chance he'll be moved on to fund some motorbike purchasing :D Genuinely it's an amazing bike all round! Thanks for watching!
Not that I noticed, but I was coming off a 1987 Magna that day so it's possible I was desensitised. I was out on it for 5 hours and got off feeling refreshed so if its there it wasn't noticeable to me
@@TheGorillaBiker Thats good to know. I'm seriously considering the xr, originally I was all about the ktm 1290 gt but after watching a few videos on the xr I think it would suit better for the odd 2up touring days and being able have a good old blast alone, just a bit worried about the buzz, time to book a test ride. Thanks man, subbed and liked 👍
I'm on my 2nd XR now first one was left standard but my 2019 motorsport version deserved mods so I have an Austin racing system and have lightened the bike by a few kilos in other ways. I embarrass superbikes all the time and it is only the latest crop of superbikes that will get away from me.
Nice! Austin racing make some really nice stuff, what type of power is it putting out now or is it still close to stock? Not surprised at all man! I'd love to bring it out to a track and have a go with one it is wicked fast. Thanks for watching.
@@TheGorillaBiker Haven't put it on a dyno and probably won't but its noticeably quicker then the 2016 I had, partly due to less weight and around an extra 3hp. The sound is awesome as I went for the loudest and biggest internal Austin racing exhaust. Pretty sure it wouldn't make any track day limit and there is no baffle, makes people jump though.
@@jeffiles7953 yeah it'd all add up! Sure a butt dyno is all you need really :) you should definitely record a few flybys at some stage I'd love to hear it! Track day limits still make me sad :( the Honda Magna I own does the same 😂
I was considering the 2020 XR but after the test ride I felt underwhelmed its too neutered for my liking so now considering a 2019 version. How does it sound and feel compared to the 2020 version? Does it pop and bang on the over runs like the single r or double r? Does it have that raw edge?
I haven't ridden the 2020 version myself yet. The 2019 is also very stable to be honest, until you put in the dynamic pro chip or whatever it's called to unlock the 4th mode. I've tried it since and it makes the bike a demon. I'd try get the 2020 with Dynamic pro mode turned on as I've only heard good things about that bike. But they are very very.....mature feeling. So safe I suppose.
That is a good looking bike. Great balance between sport and touring! Looks like a beautiful day! Texaco gas station in Ireland?!?!? My wrist isn't really good at moderation.....👍 Bike sounds great at the end!!!
I agree :) I want to ride a Multistrada and do a comparison!! It was an unreal day! Haha yeah they're around the place here! Lies....you're well able to control your speed I've witnessed it :) Yeah it has a lovely throaty sound in real life.
