Lol thats me on s55 race with my m4 e85 vs redeye. To add to your video I have put almost 38k race miles running only full e85 almost at 600whp and have over 100 races running at that power level. Only issues I have had in my last three years and 38k miles racing were spark plugs/ ignition coils / fuel injectors. I testify for s55 being one of the best engines in the world

LS guy in the comments section here, it’s insane what catless DPs, E85 and a couple more bolt ons does to these engines. They are already underrated from factory especially in the Supra Mk5, putting to the ground basically what they claim at the crank. @@jakoreian Just regular oil/filter changes really and also the spark plugs every few years. Bmw recommend doing the oil change every 16k miles, but I'd say 8-10k is more reasonable if you plan on keeping the car long term. I've had mine for almost 60k miles now with 0 engine issues. Gearbox oil is another one that bmw says is "lifetime", however again, I'd say at least at 80k miles it migth be a good idea to change it. If you keep on top of the fluid changes and let the car warm up before you start revving it up, it should treat you well.

Having now owned an n54, it can make about 600 whp reliably as pistons can fail as low as 650, however than can make 700 reliably if you modify it very well (and if you have one of the stronger 07 or is motors) however maintenance on these is very costly and it is costing me a great deal right now. I don't think it's underrated. It's just that for a lot of us car guys, we either don't have the money to buy a newish BMW with less mileage and a warranty, or the money to maintain a high mileage BMW. It's just better horsepower per dollar to go with an LS or coyote, both of which would be more reliable at higher mileage than the BMW. But we can't deny that, if done properly, a modded BMW turbo inline 6 is a force to be reckoned with.

Owning N54 with two-three bolt on parts and simple Stage 1+ tune from MHD I can't say a bad thing about this car. I'm surprised it's that reliable after hearing all these horror stories. Yeah, it has these expensive injectors, water pump, HPFP but not gonna lie, FCP Euro got you covered. In case of injectors though, you don't need to replace them. Yeah, I know that's shocking but all you need to do most of the time is clean injector tips and replace teflon seals, that's all. I have plans to chase the power but I'm not sure if I really need it. 390hp that MHD claims (never dyno'ed, idk if it's true) is enough for me and I don't know if making car less reliable is worth doing all these mods. Toyota saw potential in the b58 and that says it all There was a comparison drag race between an mustang Mach 1 auto vs MKV Supra 3.0 vs Nissan Z auto. The Z came in dead last and the mustang and Supra tied, b58 swings above its weight class and its already beating its direct competition
@joshreynolds729
@joshreynolds729 Год назад
Above it’s class? All of those cars are equally expensive. I watched the video and the mustang won by half car being na then the Supra turbo then the z also turbo both are lighter On forced induction and still lost to a na mustang Mach 1 which is just a track GT 🤣. Now is it probably the king of all inline 6 motor yep sure is but I’m not a fan of aluminum blocks either. It is impressive but would be nothing without a lot of boost and light weight saving. I prefer to make big power without having to even change my power adder or internals, weight saving can be had later. Boosted motors are not reliable and the more power you push through it the less it becomes. Also bmw has many electrical problems but the design is strong being an inline motor due to balance but only matters if the internals can handle it because the design flaw is torsion having 6 inline subject to snapping cranks and doing block damage but needs boost available to which it does not stock therefore it incomplete and might as well get the 2 extra cylinders if I’m going to build anyways for 1000 plus hp something these cars can’t do unless built on a lot of boost. Mustangs don’t need to be built to make good power and they actually sound good however still aluminum block. Now for a street car daily that you can make relatively fast sure. Not my top choice but everybody seems to think it’s the fastest platform out because they watch babyaga 🤣.

I have a 2015 Audi A3 (DSG 2.0T). These little cars are pretty quick with a tune, downpipe, HPFP, and ethanol. The little factory is20 turbo can do mid 11's. Hybrid turbo's (with decent spool for daily driving) are running low 10's. Low mileage excellent condition A3's and GTI's can be found around 20k. Add in around 10k and you've got a reliable 10 or 11 second daily driver. Not bad.

most versions of that engine are a beast when it comes to upgrades, all you need is a bigger VG turbo and a dude with a laptop that knows his thing, to make some easy HP and NM xD I am driving an e39 with the smallest M57, the D25 with a turbo (direct bolt-on) from an e60 m57d30tu (218) and a remap, it hits the fuel limit at around 230 bhp at the wheels, but this isnt what is insane about it, the insane is that it hits a little over 600nm, for some reason that thing PULLS like a train! Couple of months ago i had to give a tug to a friend of mine with his 190e (yes, i pulled a merc on a rope :D ) which wouldnt start and at 1 moment i received a call from the guy (i had forgoten i have a car on my tow hook) "dude, slow down, we gonna get killed" - the bro was terrified as it was *not us doing a 160km/h while pulling the car by a rope* by the way the car gives an economy around the 50 mpg when driven calmly :)

As long as you don't copy something that is patented everything is fine. Look at Stark Future for example. They built a new kind of electric motocross bike. They openly said that to not have to do the research on frame stiffness where they have no previous experience in, they bought all other motocross bikes from big manufacturers and tested their frame stiffness. They then came up with their own frame built around their component layout that has similar stiffness characteristics to all the other frames. The first turbo inline 6 that was ever put on an M car wasn't the S55....it was the N54 in the E82 1 Series M-Coupe

True! The 135i was a true badass and was using the N54 till 2011 where it then went to the N55 engine. Really was a badass car that felt more like you were in a E36 than a 1 series

Thank you for making the BMW engines simple and easy to understand lolol. As a MK5 Supra owner, understanding the previous engines BMW used and currently use was kinda confusing. Especially coming from Lexus/Toyota products 😅

N54 was a nightmare until you dropped almost 10K into it to sort everything and...I still want one in an 135i.

Very untrue, owned 2, didn’t have to drop 10k, about 1k in parts to make it very reliable

@@I6N54, sounds like you did not own it new. Turbos are shit. Injectors or shit. Electric water pump is shit. Both fuel pumps are shit. Boost leaks due to shitty charge pipes. Walnut blasts. Shall I continue? Upgraded turbos, 3-5K depending what you choose. Index 12 injectors (reburbished) $1,000. Both fuel pumps will run about $1,000 together. Upgraded water pump is like $400. Charge pipes? No idea. Still gotta do coil packs too. All this this like 6K on the really cheap end. You get really good parts and close to 8K. Then....THE MAINTENANCE.

@@callanotis7902. I said refurbished injectors. New injectors are $2,000-$2,500. Cheaper turbos? Yeah, you buy them bullshit Vargas "upgraded" turbos if you want to. What I’ve been most impressed with from BMW engine calibrators is how they run 14.7AFR at WOT on their these high compression boost’s DI straight sixes. I’ve been trained that cylinder temperatures need to be kept cool to avoid knock where richening the AFRs for cylinder-cooling is needed. But then again, PFI engines of old (2JZGTE) are an older design; hence, the times improvement in design/efficiencies.
@tomastarvydas63
@tomastarvydas63 Год назад
Good point, but I believe direct injection helps to bring down the temperatures inside the cylinder, I believe because atomised fuel has big surface area thus it can absorb more heat directly from cylinder
@michaell.445
@michaell.445 Год назад
I could always look for myself; but are the ones that you're talking about also use valvetronic with the staged intakes? Because that makes it function as if each cylinder had its own throttle body and creates a different airflow as necessary for each one!

does help n54 is an open deck block and an electric water pump, temperature wise. More cooling.

Want me to show you the coal on the back of my n54 cars bumper to show you DI under high load is NOT lean…. You are misinformed. it’s only able to do that when it’s under light load cruising conditions, under heavy load it’s actually LESS efficient than the indirect injection. This is because the indirect spray absorbs heat better than the quick squirt of direct, and the larger quantity fuel having to be injected under boost/load means it has less time to mix with air charge. Can you visualize it yet? under light load the DI is super efficient, but under heavy load the port injection mist cools the runner and mixing before the intake valve provides a more even and consistent burn at wide open throttle… Also picture the spray pattern of the direct injector, at low loads those pores are spraying perfect atomized fuel mists into the chamber. At high load they go full super soaker just to try to meet the insane fuel load requirement, which do you think they’re designed to operate at efficiently?

Own a 340i with b58 engine and while only at a stage 1, 400bhp at crank is more than enough for uk roads especially as a daily driver. Also worth mentioning mines a pre gpf filter car and sounds fantastic. 4 years of ownership still running perfectly
