One of the cool things they introduced into this season you're reviewing is that each character comes with a Reference Card for their movelist. It tells you your opponent's Special and Ultra Attacks. That fighting game analogy you made at the end was pretty spot on
@twentysides
@twentysides 2 года назад
Yeah that reference is super handy for teaching the game. Without it, it would definitely boil down to "how well do you know the opponent's cards" and feel really random until you mastered it.

This game is so good! Definitely worth checking out. The lucky flip thing isn't actually about luck, most of the time you can figure out what your opponent is likely playing

YOOOO WHAT PROZD REVIEWING MY FAVORITE TABLE TOP GAME OF ALL TIME?
@Cyanicide
@Cyanicide 5 лет назад
Love this game. Fair criticisms, though the cards-as-board is necessary to keep the cost down (you can get mats from L99's site if you want them, sleeves work too), and the random feeling with high speed/guard thing is only for the first couple of games, as you get to know the characters more, the middling speed/guard cards become more relevant. Much like a fighting game, the early plays feel like button mashing, more plays reveal its inner depths. The next set is Street Fighter, so bit more on the nose with the fighting game theme. As far as a highly replayable game that I can play over and over again goes, this one's great. Stands alongside Innovation and Race for the Galaxy for me. I'd recommend Church vs Empire or Guardians vs Myths for a starting set though, this one has more obtuse characters (though Renea's one of my mains).

The flipping mechanic isn’t really complete luck based and it’s never always who has the biggest number unless you’re playing blindly. The game allows the fighter to mitigate all sorts of possibilities. (Power>speed, speed>defense, defense>power) It seems that you’re playing style that is way in the offensive side, which has it’s risks. The game is about trying to get in you opponent’s head and see what is the best way to react.
@drunkcrunkfranken
@drunkcrunkfranken 5 лет назад
Also, as of Season 2 (which Hunters vs Demons is part of) each character comes with a reference card that lists all of their unique attacks (5 specials, 2 ultras). The majority of a character's deck consists of normal attacks (8) and there are always two copies of every attack, so there are 15 different your opponent could potentially counter with, but only a small handful of those are sensible to react with at any given time, and that number goes down as the game goes on since you can assume that your opponent won't ever be able to attack with something that they've used both copies of (at least until they reshuffle). It's really not that luck based, and once you get deeper into the game you begin to realize that even wild swings aren't all that luck based either.

I do have to say that you NEED to check out BattleCON (EXCEED's sister game) which does have the board and stuff and feels much less random since it's a perfect information game. It even has a video game version called BattleCON: Online. A certain king sounds a lot like you.
@Keasarr
@Keasarr 5 лет назад
Highly recommend you check out also other Level99 games they've made, especially games like Millennium Blades (imagine Yu-Gi-Oh The Board Game Card Game Meta Game), Argent Consortium (Hogwarts but every teacher is a scheming arsehole after Dumbledores post), Sellswords (Final Fantasy's Triple Threat Triad but actually done well), BattleCON (like Exceed but a bit more strategic, a lot less luck and more figuring out what your opponent is gonna do, very open information game) and Pixel Tactics (strategic/tactical unit placement game with a ton of variety). Also recommend checking out their upcoming games like Empyreal: Spells & Steam and Seventh Cross (the board game your copy of Exceed is based on). If it isn't obvious, kinda a big fan of Level99 games, even if their games doesn't turn out the best I always find them to have something quite interesting going for them. For you SungWon, I'd definetly check out Millennium Blades if able to, they are about to release their next big expansion on Kickstarter as well.

I'd say 'lucky flip' is a bit of a misnomer. This does happen in the game, with the 'Wild Swing' attack. However, what's happening here is actually a blind bid. You both bid your cards, knowing a bit of what the opponent could do, or has the chance to do. The vast majority of this isn't character specific even - it's centered around the base cards and their interactions. Now even those take time to understand. So when you play just a couple of games of this, it's a crap shoot. With a bit more insight, it turns into a game of reading the intentions of your opponent and trying to thwart them.

I despise the L99 rulebooks. Fortunately, the games themselves are great.
@SoZettaSlow
@SoZettaSlow 5 лет назад
Yeah, I feel like they make the right call by putting "hey, here's a QR code to just watch a tutorial video" at the front of every rulebook. I totally get it; they're a small operation and they're doing their best to keep the games affordable, but yeah, readability suffers. Adore their games, though. Especially Millennium Blades.

Really sad they sent you this rather than Battlecon. That was their other (imo superior) 2d fighting card game. It has a traditional rule book, a board to play on, and its original ip. Game seems a bit simpler too. If you have the chance. You may prefer that. Still has flipping mechanic but hand size is 8 cards with 4 on the side that just cycle so its a lot easier to keep track of.

This might actually be more complicated than MTG
@Norse
@Norse 5 лет назад
it is to start, but ultimately you learn a character's deck and then it's very skill-based, as opposed to MTG which has 17,000 cards that can be variable. it's about as complex as a fighting game, pretty much made for that audience
@madisonking8057
@madisonking8057 5 лет назад
Norse is there no expansion or customization?
@Norse
@Norse 5 лет назад
@@madisonking8057 No, like a fighting game, each character has their moveset and you just git gud over time. so the game experience gets better the more you play since you start memorizing attack patterns and strategies. there are something like >32 characters at the moment (16 per "season", 4 characters per box - next year is Street Fighter with 16 more characters). so yeah the first games are like playing a Guilty Gear game and it feels random and 'button mashy' but once you play more, it's quite complex and balanced

Eh, I was hoping for this game to be a bit better, but I'll give it a pass. I wonder though if BattleCON and Yomi are better or not, because I've heard many different opinions about both.
@jaygreen7494
@jaygreen7494 5 лет назад
Each is different, none strictly better. Haven't played Yomi, but it has some of the hand management and risk mitigation of exceed, but it does not have the physical positioning that forms an important part of exceed. Battlecon does have physical positioning, but has 0 hidden information and no random elements, so decisions feel much more immediately tactical, but it also means decisions are a little slower to make
@jaygreen7494
@jaygreen7494 5 лет назад
Also, I will say that all 3 games have a barrier to entry. Players are expected to spend some time with them before figuring them out.
@brzostek97
@brzostek97 5 лет назад
@@jaygreen7494 So they all share this aspect of fighting games - it takes time to learn and that's really good to hear. And I just realized that they all have a print&play demo, so I'll just give them a try before deciding on which one to buy.
