I've been getting some requests to show off the pedal board I've been using lately. Well, at the risk of disappointing some, the truth is that I've been mainly using an Axe-FX II on stage for the last few months. This is because airline freight restrictions have forced me to but also because the Axe-FX II is really good.
However, I do still use the 'real thing' and this is a board I put together this morning to give you an idea of what goes on. My problem is that I'm spoilt for choice therefore many of these pedals - especially the dirt pedals - are interchangeable and many don't last longer than a few days before I get bored with them and change them.
Other excuses for chopping and changing include the type of amp that I know will be at the gig waiting for me. For instance, if I'm lucky enough to score a Bluesbreaker combo I'll use a Tim or Timmy, for sure, because they were designed for a Strat/Plexi combo (if memory serves me correctly), and they do that job better than anything else in my experience. But they're not as great with Fender-type amps and therefore the Red Jasper makes an appearance today.
The Mobius has proved very useful as it eliminates the need for a heap of different modulation pedals and it has the loop facility which is a godsend. Why? Well, some people, for instance, like to run their Vibe effect before their dirt; others like to run it after dirt. The Mobius will let you do this. Very cool.
I explain the benefits of the other pedals during the video.
Todays tools:
Guitars: Smitty Custom Guitars 'The Hog" mahogany T-Style guitar with Brierley Vintage/Modern hum buckers.
Amp: Laney VH-100R Clean Channel & L412 Cabinet (Greenbacks)
Cables : Providence
Mic : Violet Design 'The Amethyst' (amp) Samson Airline77 (me)
Camera : Canon 60D (me) and Sony HDR CX150 (pedal)
Soundcard : AVID Mbox Pro 3
Computer : Apple iMac 27" i7 3.4 GHz 16 GB RAM
Software : Pro Tools 10 LE, Waves CLA Guitars (slight comp over input track), Waves L3-16 Limiter (to keep levels in check at output), Apple Final Cut Pro X (video editing and RU-vid compression).

Hi Brett, I'm one of the people who requested for the pedalboard update. Thank you so much for doing this, it's really interesting to see what your choices are, as you have a near unlimited amount of pedals to choose from! Kind regards!

The Wah and the Auto-Wah together surprised me, but the selection seems so versatile and expressive. I was glad to see the array of drive pedals, as I feel like my four was a bit obsessive, so now I feel better about it. Great demo as always!

Love it. Glad to see I was not alone in wanting a pedalboard update from you. I wonder too if many of us are silently waiting on a new smaller sized Origin Cali76 to be released..

Hi! I am glad to see the crossover drive on your board, its personally one of My absolute fav pedals ever. I actually sold My blue note pedal, because i found that the crossover drive did the low gain clean tone very good and matched the blue notes great clean tone.

A Smorgasbord of sounds! love it all. I'm glad you offered that there are alternatives to all your listed pedals. I'm using the alternatives right now. You make a strong case for the top of the line effects though.

I agree, although I hold a special place for traditional stomp boxes and even things like the M13. Most were built by guys with devotion and integrity and you can find those qualities if you look (and listen) hard enough. Some are better than others, of course... :)

Everything sounds great. Are there any youtube vids of you performing with your band? I'd be curious to see how you use all those pedals in a live setting, like how you choose a particular dirt pedal for a particular solo, whether you ever stack them, etc.

Lovely guitar and little rig Brett. Do you still have this guitar ? Real nice. Amazing you mention the axe fx, the cost of building a large analogue board is probably more expensive, weighs 20 kg. Each domain has it's benefits. love your channel , always giving the Aussies a good plug.

Nice demo! Just curious, with that arrangement of dirt pedals, you'd you still see an application where you'd stack any of them?

What are the advantages/disadvantages (voltage/current wise) with a daisy chain? I'm having some problems to power all of my 8 pedals, a combination of digital and analog, with my Voodoo Lab PP2+. Does a daisy chain divide de current over the pedals while the voltage stays the same? Thanks, great demo!

Brett the last little solo lick you did,were you using the rotary effect from mobius with the velvet fuzz,and tape delay?
@guitarist100

nice tones,are these sorts of pedals better through a valve amp or will any decent amp do ?
@chandlehandle

Hi Burgs. I was wondering what you were routing before and after modulation with the Mobius. Also, I was wondering if the Blue Note would work as a good "edge of breakup" pedal, or would something like Red Jasper be better since it has more "dynamics" as you mention in the video. I actually already got the Blue Note in the mail, but I haven't had a chance to fire it up (ah, the joys of living in a studio apartment). Thanks man, you're awesome!
@BrettKingman
@BrettKingman 10 лет назад
Normally I'd route a vibe and phaser pre-dirt and things like a tremolo and chorus post-dirt. But the beauty of the Mobius is that it allows the user to experiment - something that I think more people should do. The difference between the Blue Note and the Red Jasper is marginal, at least the way I use them, so I think the Blue Note will serve you well. It's also capable of a lot more gain than the Red Jasper should you need it. Cheers and thanks for the kind words. :)

How you compare the Mission Rewha and the CAE wah? also, what settings are you using on the rewah?

Nice, quite a change from last board, elements finally kicked off! One surprise though, no H9? Any reason you chose the empress / mobius over the H9?
@BrettKingman
@BrettKingman 10 лет назад
As I tried to allude in my text above, nothing stays forever. I am way spoiled for choice. The Elements is fabulous but I've found it to be a little noisy at higher gain with my single coiled guitars. The H9 lives in my studio, permanently jacked into the Laney VH-100R's FX loop. I can operate it from my desk with an iPad or whatever. I just love that machine. Too much for the board, though, when all I want is ambient delay.

Bergs a quick question if I may? How have you connected the Mobius to the signal chain on the March 2014 boardam? I have a Mobius and Big Sky and am using the LR in and out as I run a stereo rig. Having said that I want to make sure configuration is correct. Both strymon pedals are connected to a TC Nova system and I could use midi but would like to explore stereo setup first. signal chain is volume pedal, polytune, polyphonic reverb, then mobius followed by big sky into nova system. I've used the LR input and output from mobius to big sky and into nova system. Would you suggest a better configuration of signal chain, to get the best of the Strymon pedals? Cheers mate

@BrettKingman

I'd hate to add it up. Basically of those pedals have been separately demoed for their respective companies. Often the pedals are given in exchange for my services. If I had to buy them all separately I'm not sure I could afford it.
@McLguitars
@McLguitars 10 лет назад
surprised not to see the p19 on there. You using the velvet instead?
@BrettKingman
@BrettKingman 10 лет назад
The Velvet is a remarkable pedal. It can do pretty good impersonations of many others but I like it because it has its own thing going on. If I just wanted a Muff, though, the P19 would head the list along with 2 or 3 others.

Well, that's debatable, but I think it's the nicest sounding humbucker equipped guitar. The combination of the mahogany and Mick Brierley's pickups is pretty good, for sure. Thanks for watching. :)

brett csn u tell us more info about this tele ?thanks
@BrettKingman
@BrettKingman 8 лет назад
+Kam Chuen So Sure. Smitty Custom Guitars. Designed by Eric Smid and myself. Mahogany body and neck, Rosewood board. Mick Brierley Vintage/Modern pickups, bolted into the body like a MM Axis. Everything's oiled - no nitro. Schaller graduated height locking tuners complete the picture along with a 500K low-friction volume pot. It's the perfect mix of Charvel, Les Paul and Music Man Axis. We call it "The Hog".
@kamchuenso7836

+Brett Kingman thanks sir !precious info I always think of a replacement of a les Paul because I don't like its heavy body and tele body is gorgeous too.

Could you show how did those dirt pedals into the mobius please
@Humungahdungah
@Humungahdungah 10 лет назад
Mark Kelley I'm guessing starting from the auto wah going into "Left IN" of the Mobius, coming out "Left Out" of the Mobius, into the 5 dirt pedals, back into the "Right IN" of the Mobius, back out the "Right Out" into the delay. Very clever.
