After I came out of the Forces, I spent 35 years in Ship Repair Yards on the Tyne and have seen a lot of really big blasting jobs. Yet I still watched this vid to the end. There is something about blasting that is enjoyable to watch.👍👍

Nice job Mick. The boatyard should have cut those rubbing strakes off before you blasted it. Welded every couple of feet and only along the top is very old fashioned and a recipe for disaster, it harbours rust from day one and underneath them is probably the deepest pitting.

@Mobileblaster

@SilvaDreams

Lasers are good at removing paint and surface rust or prepping a surface for painintg but they can't get rid of scaling or "bubble" rust like you see on the side of the boat here since it just vaporizes the rust on the top. It's why sandblasting or grinding will always have a place for really thick and deep rust is present.

@@Mobileblaster Oh are they not strong enough for this application?
@SilvaDreams
@SilvaDreams 15 дней назад
@simonelt7317 Not really a matter of strength, the laser systems can weld the metal when turned up. THe problem lies in how they function. The laser will only vaporize the very upper layers of the rust when it is scaling or bubbling making it look clean but the thick rust is still there. Sandblasting will remove the large chunks of deep rust and exposes the pitted surface. They are good at removing surface rust, paint and other stuff just before priming and painting though.
@Mobileblaster
@Mobileblaster 14 дней назад
@SilvaDreams From what I've seen they seem overpriced and underperform I've yet to be convinced they can do productive work in a reasonable time frame
@SilvaDreams
@SilvaDreams 14 дней назад
@Mobileblaster Like I said they are great for light surface rust, getting rid of anti-corrosion stuff on new sheet metal or any paints or primers (they'll even remove powder coating easily) but they aren't good for what you do which is remove heavy or deep rust which requires potential patch work afterwords. Each has their strengths and neither will remove the other.

@A.S.8.9.
@A.S.8.9. 2 месяца назад
@@Mobileblaster what I mean is that instead of going like this top to bottom or left-right stripes/lines that look satisfying it actually takes longer and uses more abrasive. You should constantly wave it with a short sweeping motion or like a small circle. Don’t know how to explain it better😊 this way you can tell sooner that the area is already clean and save a considerable amount of time and material, and depending on what is the goal - on top of better efficiency it’s easier to achieve an SA 2 1/2, which in my experience is most common requirement. I’m doing sandblasting and painting for close to a decade now, been learning from the best and experimented a lot 😊 thats my 2 cents, sorry if I bothered you 🙃
