We've seen the good, bad, and the ugly when it comes to boat storage and winterization. There are lots of great ways to do it and other than a couple essential rules, there are many great procedures you can use. If you want to know boat storage ideas for the DIYer in you, there are a few myths you can ignore. In this video we will cover:
Intro 0:00
Wrap up your engine for winter storage 1:15
Any boat cover is better than no cover 2:29
Your fuel tank must be completely full or empty 3:53
Batteries must be removed from your boat for storage 4:35
Mothballs and dryer sheets keep mice away 5:27

Regarding fuel tanks: Just like storing a classic car, a full tank avoids rust. But…if a tank is plastic (like my ‘11 Stingray), a full tank makes no real difference. If the fuel is treated, to avoid moisture and retain its ethanol content, it’s fine.Thanks for posting especially about the wrapping. 🇨🇦👍🏼

Our pleasure Barry and good notes. Most marine tanks are now plastic, aluminum, or stainless. The one advantage a full tank has is lack of room for condensation in the tank. It also has three downsides though and include 1. Having to pay for the fuel in the fall 2. Having to burn 6-8 month old fuel to start the season, and 3. When you fill the tank in the fall on a cool day, the next spring on the first warm sunny day, the fuel can expand in the tank causing it to vent overboard causing a mess on your boat or the environment

Right on, makes sense. I put a pieced of scotch tape over the pee hole on the outboard to keep the bugs out. Bugs love to go go in and clog those holes up. Scotch tape seals and comes of real easy. I zip tie a reminder on the steering wheel to take it off...in case I forget.

The only issue i have with this is some manufacturers recommend lower grade fuel. Example my 200 pro xs recommends 87 grade. Mercury says 91 or premium makes it run worse.

i lost 2 agm deep cycle batteries only 2 years old in my truck camper due to freezing.that was a $2000 lesson.now i remove every battery in all my equipment before winter storage and keep them all in my heated workshop.

Edward, I hear you and it is not a bad idea to do what you are saying. We store 500 boats and some with multiple batteries. We would need to store over 1000 batteries and the time alone would be crazy, much less the space and organizing. We only have 5% of batteries that need to be replaced in the spring abs they are almost always over 4 years old

I enjoy your videos. I have an IO mercruiser 5.7. Before covering it, I spray the engine and hoses, and fuel line with WD40. Repells moisture and prevents mold/mildew from growing.
@barrybebenek8691
@barrybebenek8691 2 года назад
This sounds like a great idea. (The mold thing especially). Have you ever had issues from doing this?
@drcoffee5588
@drcoffee5588 2 года назад
Funny enough, that was why wd49 was created, to displace water on electrical devices. I also wipe a rag soaked with wd40 on my vehicle door weather stripping in the winter. It keeps the ice from freezing the door to the door frame. It will vaporize off when you run the engine. Or just wipe it off in the spring before starting with a dry rag.

CRC 656 works best for spraying down engines under the cowl or engine compartment and also works at preventing some corrosion

Would like to hear if it's worth it to do heated indoor storage over cold indoor storage. Like how much better or worse is one over the other?

If it's winterized correctly temp doesn't matter.air flow is the key.

When opening season comes, do you have much of a mice problem at your marina?
@boatinglessons

Ryan, there are always a few…. If they can get into a relatively new house easily, they certainly can also into a boat in storage.

Here's my fuel tank problem. I have a 2022 Polarkraft Bay190. It has a built in tank stamped 33 gallon but it has a adapter attached to the fuel fill tube that actually prevents the tank from taking more than 24 gallons and you can't get around it. I also live in New Jersey where there is absolutely NO ETHANOL FREE GAS!!!!! I treated with Yamaha fuel products as recommended by 2 Yamaha dealers. So you can see that I'm in a catch 22 situation, damned if you do damned if you don't. So my only choice in my mind is to pump my fuel out each Spring and start fresh.

What is your opinion of storing your outdrive up or down while in storage.
@drcoffee5588
@drcoffee5588 2 года назад
Drive Down. It stops water from pooling in the pop area and freezing
@boatinglessons
@boatinglessons 2 года назад
DrCoffee is 100% correct, always drive down. Along with the water pooling issue, down and straight ahead removes strain from your bellows, hoses, and cables

So if I have a pop up garage do I not need to shrink wrap my boat?
@boatinglessons

Jason, no - in our opinion that is more coverage than you need - choose one or the other

Do you know if the boat trailer should be jacked up so the wheels are off the ground and put on blocks?
@barrybebenek8691
@barrybebenek8691 2 года назад
Personal choice. You’ll save your tires, but only so very minimal.
@drcoffee5588
@drcoffee5588 2 года назад
I air up the tires to max pressure so they stay round and dont deflate and break the bead seal

Another trick a buddy of mine does for his car is put high density foam insulation under his tires. The foam conforms and prevents flat spots on your tires.

I think one of the things you can do if you are say storing it at home in the backyard is to make sure it is well covered with a towing cover PLUS a secured down tarp, and make sure all holes into the body of the boat are plugged with steel wool. I also personally spray coyote urine around the outside of the boat in hopes it will scare mice away (dunno if it works though........available from hunting supply stores) The one year I forgot to plug a hole where the wiring goes into the trailer, the mice did do damage which cost me time and money to fix. Since the boat is next to an outbuilding, I also keep mouse traps set year round to catch any living under the building and it's amazing how many show up... Paranoid maybe, but better safe than sorry....mice can total a boat if they eat wiring buried in the internal foam. And the idiot engineer who decided to include soy into the formula for automotive wiring should be shot.... On another note, an ounce of methyl hydrate will hopefully get rid of any moisture in the gas tank...

batteries definitely don’t like cold and freezing temperatures definitely affect the batteries. there’s a reason why Teslas have coils around the batteries to keep them at optimal temperatures and they lose efficiency in the winter because the software uses the coils to keep the batteries warm. do yourself a favor and keep the batteries at room temperature.
@boatinglessons
@boatinglessons 8 месяцев назад
You are not wrong - just not always practical. Tesla batteries are of course a totally different type of battery that’s in most boats. If you can do it, you likely should
@deathcoder
@deathcoder 8 месяцев назад
@@boatinglessons ohh, yeah practicality is a different issue. My point is, if you can, remove them and keep them at room temperature in the off season.

You should actually disconnect the negative battery cable, because when connecting battery cables, the positive should be connected first, then the negative.
