Stress free boating is the best boating. Your boat's battery is critical to staying on the water longer and not being left stranded. Some simple tips on how to maintain a boat battery could mean the difference between having a blast on the water and being stuck at the ramp or needing a tow. In this video we will cover:
Intro 0:00
12V battery basics 1:10
Cleaning and securing battery terminals 1:56
Storing your boat battery for winter 3:56

Remember when connecting the battery, positive first and then negative. When disconnecting, negative first then positive. You do need to tighten the terminals more than just by hand but don’t over tighten them. I would recommend periodically “trickle” charging the battery when not in use.

Please folks, disconnect the NEGATIVE terminal instead of the positive side. As dc current runs “negative to positive” and not the other way, disconnecting the negative ensures that no current flows anywhere that you may have missed. Also the positive wires will not touch anything that could potentially cause a spark or short.🇨🇦👍🏼

Dialectric grease on the terminals and your connections helps prevent corrosion. Trailer hookups as well keeps moisture out

Thanks for this vid. We have found - as we trailer our boat to the lake on weekends, a battery disconnect has kept our battery in tip-top shape for each season. Boat comes out of the water, we undo the disconnect until next ride. (Works on the cars in storage too). In winter, they go on trickle-charges. That’s our thing. 🇨🇦👍🏼

I'm planning on replacing my two batteries in my 1988 21' Starcraft Marine it has a 90 hp Johnson. What type battery do you suggest for these two batteries?? Marine Duel purpose 27 series ?

Thanks 👍 Boaters should keep some basic hand tools on board, including wire brush

Can I allocate the wires between the dual battery studs?

I never disconnect the battery unless I'm replacing it. I keep mine on a trickle charger all the time that it's parked at home. My batteries last between 4 and 5 years. My boat is a 1997 Maxum 1700SR with the 3.0 mercruiser motor. I bought the boat new and I still have it. Runs and looks great. I have some water skiing videos on RU-vid.

@@boatinglessons I bought a scope camera about a year ago. I pulled each sparkplug and took pictures inside each cylinder. You could still see the cross hatch marks in each one. Plus the pistons had little carbon build-up on them. I do use fogging oil each time that I know it will sit for long periods or for winter time. I also fill the engine with antifreeze for winter time. It helps keep down corrosion build-up. This is the first boat that I ever owned.

Gave up on 12-volt lead-acid battery's,,, went to lithium titanite, much cheaper and far more benefits such as six cells at 3.2 volts each gets you a battery at 13.5 to 13.8 volts battery which is what most alternators charge at anyway . Much easier starting more longevity with your voltage when starting, battery can be charged and drained completely without any damage at 9000 cycles. Totally sealed. At $300 wholesale it's a super deal...

Thanks for the video. Some people say you should add grease over the terminals and wires after installation, would you recommend this ? Cheers Bob

Do you mean at the connection harness from tow vehicle to trailer?

Use dialetic grease on the terminals to always maintain the current connection and deter corrosion. This is the purpose of dialectic grease. Over winter in cold Canada I periodically charge my batteries in a warm insulated environment out of the wind . I also cover each battery with a garbage bag to keep dust off the terminals. My batteries last 8 to 12 years because of all this.

@@boatinglessons Sorry, your reply has just been flagged up. I was thinking about the batteries in the boat itself for the engine starting and the leisure battery for all the accessories ?

You didn't talk about keeping a "battery teder" on winter storage to float charge. Do you recommend that ?

I heard nothing about checking fluid levels in batteries. That plays a major role in the lifespan of the battery as well as safety.
