Back around 1970 or so when I was delivering papers a crow landed on my handle bars and basically stayed there for 3.5 miles, the distance of my paper route. I used to talk to the crows a lot since I could caw a lot like them and I was bored. Either this crow was somebody's pet or maybe one day this crow decided I was harmless and decided to say hello. I'll never forget it.

Crows and Ravens are highly intelligent birds and they take to people just as a dog, cat or other people would and there have been numerous studies proving their intelligence but also they study the behaviour of humans in their territory. In all likelihood is that crow knew you were passing there every day and he decided to make his move on this particular day.

I'm amazed that the crow, perhaps through mimicry, rolls over on his back like a cat to invite play fighting. Making himself vulnerable indicates a high level of trust and perhaps even affection.

Rescued a crow falling from the nest . Became the family pet and was with us for nearly 15 years . When my Father passed from cancer the Crow was soon to follow , of a broken heart we think . The best pet I ever had , such love and personality . Would hear my school bus pull up at the end of the day and would start cawing from a block away from inside the house , she got mad when I said goodnight cause she didn't want me to go . She stayed on a perch with a leather falconry strap on her leg and while outback by the pool occasionally slipped it's strap and would take off but within a day or 2 she'd show back up ( smelling like road kill and trash LoL ) on a nearby rooftop with the whole neighborhood helping to track her down and welcome her home . I say she was like a dog but with feathers , 30 years later and I still miss her . RIP Spooky

I had a pet crow when I was a kid. I loved that crow. He just showed up one day in the yard and let me approach him. I'd give him food and pet his head. He eventually let me put him on my shoulder. I think he must have been raised by a human he was so tame. I've never seen another crow act like that. I called him "Boss".

Crows are super smart I think he can tell which cat is his! I feed the crows dry bread in the winter as Canadian winters can be quite harsh at times. Well in the early spring when the snow was all but melted but still getting to freezing at night I was still feeding the crows. Looking out my window I was unsure what one crow was doing and sure as the day is long the crow was soaking his hard bread in a puddle to soften it before he ate it. Such ingenuity!

I fed six or seven crows every morning for over 20 years. They would sometimes wait for me atop the trees in my neighbor's yard and would caw in annoyance if I was late with their breakfast. One of them, who I called Jeffie, would sometimes follow me to the local Transfer Station where I was the attendant on the can/bottle recycling bin. I would sometimes find bits of food which I tossed out of the bin. Jeffie would swoop down and grab them. He would sit patiently on the electrical wires opposite the bin while waiting for these "snacks." I had to give up this activity when I got too old and arthritic.

That crow is actually initiating play in cat-speak. Wow, that is incredible! Dogs initiate play by doing what is called a play bow. Cats roll on their sides with their paws up. Crows don't do that, but this one has learned to! That is fascinating!!! They really are playing here. The cat has the claws sheathed and ears are attentive instead of pulled back. The cat flops on it's side just as much as the crow does. That is so sweet and cute!

Okay, I am going to add some mystery to this story. I grew up in Cleveland, TN which is immediately east of Chattanooga. IN THE 1980s my family also had a free roaming pet crow that we took outside and allowed him to freely roam. He too would interact with wild crows and acted exactly this same way with our BLACK AND WHITE CAT! I cannot help but wonder if this crow and my crow were one in the same.we named my crow Edgar Alan Crow and anytime I went outside he flew down and landed on me or I could call for him and he would fly down and land on my arm. I would bring him inside the house to be with us in the evening and he had a parrot cage he slept in but the door always stayed opened. He knew how to open it anyway if it was ever shut. It's very coincidental two families living in that close proximity to each other in the 1980s would both have pet crows that freely roam, interact with wild crows, and have taken their cat for a pet! LOL.If this is not my crow and there really were two families living near each other with matching crows I would like to have known them. If they are still around today I would love to talk with them and compare notes. Edgar came into my life when I was about 12 years old. I had him until I left to go to college in 1989. About one year prior to that I started working with Edgar to get him to take up with the wild crows permanently and to live in the wild again. I knew I would not be able to take him to college and I knew no one else would be able to dedicate the time he required to care for him and provide the attention he demanded. I succeeded in getting Edgar to join the wild crows and for at least two years Edgar would periodically return to visit when his murder of crows were near. At first it was very regularly at the time I had always returned home after school. It gradually became less frequent and the closeness of his interacting with my family became more distant. For two years his behavior made him stand out from other crows. After that he started acting more like a wild crow which kept him from standing out from the others. We could no longer determine which crow was Edgar. I am confident that he continued to come around and visit for the rest of his life. I just couldn't tell him from other crows as his behavior became more and more like the wild crows. He was the coolest pet ever and I have missed having him since I left home for college. I have incredible memories though....and btw, crows DO NOT fly south for Winter. Winter I East Tennessee is usually pretty mild. All but on the coldest of days Edgar was still taken outside and allowed to spend the majority of the day outside. He never left and the wild crows he interacted with still made the usual passes through our woods throughout Winter. They did not migrate either.

Spot on. And many people do think and say shit like that, FYI. I personally know idiots that think that way, unfortunately.

Baby crows get too big for their nests, so their parents push them out before they can fly. The fledglings hop along the ground for a day or two, flapping their wings until they can fly away. Parents watch and call to them for guidance. They hide in shrubs at night.

People are very good at making peace between the species. It takes about 3 years to get a relationship with a wild corvid. Once done, I now have upwards of 8 species of bird who come to say hello with a minimum of inter-species friction. There's even a large lizard. The trick is to learn from them and not try to teach. The old corvid couple been here for 5 years. They teach the others, and the male walks round my house a lot. He just likes the company I guess. I certainly do. He's got a scar on his head from the mating battles this year. So I call him "Pecky" .. and he answers to that name.

i do find it fascinating that a cat and a crow are friends. one of a cat's basic main instincts is to hunt and they hunt birds and mice so.... its pretty strange that a cat would not attack a certain bird in particular
