About JamesandKarla:
Hey everyone! We are husband-and-wife architectural/interior photographers based in NYC. We started our video channel to act an artistic intervention to help raise awareness of the importance of small independently-owned businesses and the unique character these shops add to the streets and neighborhoods of New York City.
In our videos we will showcase portraits of storefronts and shop owners in New York City & beyond and capture moments of city life that capture the spirit, energy and cultural diversity of individual neighborhoods. We also bring our dog, Hudson along whenever we can.
We made it our mission to thoroughly document unique 'mom-and-pop' stores when we began to notice the alarming rate at which they were disappearing. Our critically acclaimed books include “STORE FRONT: The Disappearing Face of New York”, “New York Nights”, “STORE FRONT II- A History Preserved” and “Broken Windows-Graffiti NYC”.

I rermember a used clothes store in Greenwich Village 1969 called Stage 67. Had very cool clothes some used in movies for dirt cheap.

I was 19 , hanging out in Greenwich Village. Loved the heavy smell of incense. On my way to Woodstock. Saw Ritchie Havens do "FREEDOM" . Waited 3 days to see Hendrix. GOOD TIMES. Stores and head shops open 24 hours a day.

SO much fun...thanks for telling me about this vid! Music tidbit: my father was guitar great George Barnes, who recorded under his own name, as well as with many other notable artists, including Bob Dylan, on his "Freewheelin'" album...which was recorded uptown from his Greenwich Village digs at Columbia's famed Studio A at 799 7th Avenue...before it became the equally famous A&R Recording, co-owned by one of my godfathers, engineer and producer, Phil Ramone. I was last there in 2009, as a huge Dylan freak since the Freewheelin album I just had to get to the Village. We had breakfast opposite a little park, I thought we were on Macdougal St. Got pictures of Cafe Wha and The Bitter End. Made my holiday from UK to Dylan land so worthwhile. Thanks for a lovely little tour.

Nice video, well done, but damn you cover the area like it was ancient history! Oh, okay, yeah I'm 72 and during 1969-72 McDougal street was my favorite street to hang out on. So yeah, it's now been fifty years and I'm getting old. I rarely went into The Cafe Wa as I couldn't afford it, and the Bitter End wasn't cheap either. But I liked Figeros, the Feen Jon and a diner over on 6thg avenue. I remember a group of friends all wanted to go down to Dylan's home on his birthday and I declined because I didn't think it was right to bother him. Turned out he wasn't home he was in Israel or someplace like that. Nice to see the area is cleaner now, does it still smell like wet newspaper and dog poop?

❤the vid.It’s little known Bob wanted his name to be Dillon ( after Matt Dillon) but the guy at City Hall presumed since his name change application said he was an artist - poet the guy thought he meant to spell Dylan after Thomas.😂

Very informative video of familiar places ; There's always some interesting tidbits that i learn from each of your videos, James and Karla..There's also a unique guitar store on Carmine St , Rick Kelly custom guitars, but not sure if Dylan patronized them. Just saw your video and LOVED IT!! Very cool, fun, and informative. I subscribed right away. I love NYC and seeing it's celebrated history, especially where famous people lived or establishments/places they frequented. Thank you for starting my day on such a happy upbeat note! Just before the start of the Minetta Lane/Alley segment you show a large urn filled with a plant in what looks like a small fenced in park. What is it? Looks so interesting.

We really appreciate the support and are so glad you not only enjoyed watching but also found the history of these places we visited fascinating. The little fenced in park is called Minetta Green and it is a tiny public park that is maintained by the NYC Parks Department along with help from local volunteers. The park also has an interesting history in that it is a memorial to a “not-quite-gone and not-quite-forgotten water feature of Lower Manhattan”...the Minetta Brook which once was full of small trout when Dutch colonists first settled in the area in the 1620s!

Thank you so much Aykut! We wish we could have used Dylan music too as we have all of his albums but it is copyright protected. The breathing sound we believe may be from the thick mask James was wearing while filming but we have since purchased better ones and also are using a wireless mic system with better sound quality. Hi Karla, James, Did you know/hear of a bookstore Dylan I’m told, came regularly? The Books Record Store then run by a guy named “Izzy” (Israël)? He was a ‘Folksong specialist’...?

Hi Olga...we have heard about the shop and mentioned it in our video as it was located at 110 MacDougal Street and was called the Folklore Center. Yes he was Christina but felt at home at White Horse Tavern as it was a working man’s bar and specifically at the time had many patrons including seafarers and longshoreman who worked at the nearby docks on the West Side along the Hudson River.
