In this episode, I explain the operation of the X and Y deflection plate driving amplifiers used with D3\130GH 3cm CRT by Brimar. This is the continuing saga of the Bob-O-Scope. These amplifiers allow scanning the tube with relatively low voltage scan drive waveforms of your choice.

Another fine video, Labguy. I bet you could program the clock on a VCR blindfolded.

Your vid has been very helpful to me in my own O'scope building... I have a (1961-built) GPO No.6B Mark I (similar to the Cossor miniatures) and it uses ECC81 dual triode diff amps. As the GPO designed it a variable resistor where you have C2 acts as the gain control. But bandwidth was only 10 kHz as frequency compensation was undershot. So I put a 500 pF shunt capacitor across this, and discovered there is a "gain" setting that is neither undershot nor overshot. Bandwidth for displaying a clean square wave has increased from 200 kHz. I now have an O'scope that runs from D.C. to over 200 kHz, and which also amplifies X and Y for doing cyclogram work. Superb !! ❤. Thank you !! ❤

Congratulations on your successful restoration. Glad I had a small part in the process. If you watch the next video, you will see that I "don't know it all".

I am not there yet! The input goes in at a 1 Meg resistor which cannot be substituted by a pot divider as it is a grid leak resistance. Diminish the grid-cathode resistance and the grid bias pdf will reduce, turning the triode on hard. But what is at issue is now known to be frequency compensation. I am not "restoring" since both of my GPO O'scopes are already fully repaired and showing the same behaviour. This is a design fault in perhaps the earliest diff-amp oscilloscope design.

One thing that could be improved about temperature stability is adding a regular silicon diode in series with TL431, to compensate Vbe of those current sources, that rises with temperature.

Great idea! If this system has temperature problems, I may try that method. Thanks for your input!

Great video Labguy. I really enjoy these type of in depth videos. Any danger of doing a future deep-dive video about your approach to building state machines like the ones featured in some of your earlier videos ?......Just a suggestion !

You bet! One of the barriers in that goal is that I like to program in BASIC. QB64 to be precise. (If you are an old hand at QB 4.5 from the 90's, then look up Q64 and be amazed!) Meanwhile... I may as well be carving hieroglyphics into stone as far as some of my younger viewers are concerned. I don't blame them. Youth is the time where we use up our "know-it-all" arrogance before discovering humility. So, that's all good. It's the proper path to adulthood. Us geezers just have to suck it up. Meanwhile, I want to convert the state generator code into a more modern Python script. I am no Python programmer. (It is extremely weird to me.) However, if someone is skilled in Python, and specifically random access BINARY file bit manipulation, I would be happy to provide the pseudo code if they can return the same function written in Python. There would be two classes of program. One for generating timing patterns from a simple text source file, the other for stacking the RGB 32x64 pixel color images in my video memories. I can't realistically offer cash for this service unless it is very inexpensive. But, your name and service would be praised to no end in the follow on video.

@@videolabguy At trade school I bitched about the obsolte equipment we were training on !! Core Memory indeed !!! I ranted.... first machine I got to support in my first job ... ? A PDP - 11 .... (Fate can be so cruel!! ~joking~ I fell in love with the PDP - 11) It is only when we get older that we really have something to be humble about....

do you get a commission if we buy our boards? im following the series and wanna see if i can use your circuit to drive a 7$ 2" Russian surplus scope CRT.
@videolabguy
@videolabguy Год назад
I don't get anything if you purchase the boards. As long as you understand that the video amp is not usable as designed, the scan amps are OK. If you go to my web site (www.labguysworld.com/Site_Info.htm) and find my email, I can provide the schematic in PDF directly to you. You don't necessarily need to buy the board. You could build it yourself. You, or any other interested person, may contact me and let's discuss the options.

I am thinking of buying a 5BP1 .... I know I will hate myself, either way. I am not going to try to build a serious scope . Possibly a clock or some vector drive curiosity. I built a 'scope back in the late 70s and used HV transformers and valves and all sorts. I plan to cheat using 24 / 2000 volt SMPS and same for the deflection rails. It could become a real time sink ..I would be better of devoting my efforts to getting better at ESP32 and Coding... but but... but ... SOB ...
@videolabguy
@videolabguy Год назад
Dig it, bruh! The 5BP1 is not a good choice for a CRT. Very bulky and not very bright. It's primary selling point was its cheapness. They are egg shell thin and easy to break. I would suggest a 3BP1 or even a 2BP1 or one of those with P7 or P11 phosphor for the novelty of it. You don't need to tell me about the exploding logic tree of decisions any project creates. They head for maximum chaos at warp 10. The ESP32 will at least cost a lot less in the long run. If you go "full CRT", I am willing to help. Thanks for just watching my videos! You rock.
@markawbolton
@markawbolton Год назад
@@videolabguy Yeah !! What was I thinking? It would end up being a nightmare. I have built a scope with a 3BP1 before and it is much more manageable. But extreley challenging even so. Plus I live in an RV and dont even have a proper workshop. I started to look at various ancillary circuitry and every part of it would turn into a Heath Robinson nightmare. I already have a nixie clock and a stereo valve amplifier. I would get half way thorough it and having ploughed a hundred hours or so...in i would break the 5BP1 and start reading Strindberg and wearing black lipstick ... Walk away slowly ...

Oddly enough, something called “Bobovision” already exists. Story time: In late 2000, Jiří Hodač was elected as General Director of Czech TV on a suspiciously short notice. Czech TV staff universally and publicly opposed the decision, suspecting corruption among the electors. They refused to take orders from him and his appointed head of reporting Jana Bobošíková. As a result, most reporters were fired but successfully protested the decision, prevented the new leadership from entering their office and continued to run scheduled programming, only with “STRIKE” plastered below the TV logo. Bobošíková contacted the terrestrial broadcast agency and prevented them from broadcasting news for 80% of the population while the rest continued to receive the channels via satellite, cable or rarely the internet. On Christmas Eve, she appeared as a newsreader in her own hastily produced TV news with an external agency and broadcast it over the terrestrial network instead of the studio’s version. This programming was known under the folk name Bobovize (Bobovision). In retaliation, the studio called for a protest in the following sport session. Later that week, she shut off any remotely news-related program and spread misinformation about the protest’s attendance. In the middle of Christmas holidays, she shut down the terrestrial transmission of both public TV channels for about 24 hours and ordered security to seal the studio building and lock down any toilets. People went to support the studio, lifting portable toilets, food and Christmas cookies through its windows with improvised cranes while watching their broadcast on a TV projector the technicians set up outside. As such, many reporters spent the millenial New Year’s Eve unwashed and sleeping on the floor in donated clothes while working more dedicated than ever before. Bobošíková continued attempting to thwart the protests and replace every meaningful program with ones by her non-professional staff with questionable quality but stepped down a week later when people realized her dishonesty. Later in January, the election result was appealed and laws regulating public TV leadership were updated to prevent this from occuring again. In short: Bobovision was a program by a corrupt TV leader and less than a dozen staff including teenagers whose news stories included “only 4 people and a busker showed up for the protest [which was actually the biggest in the Czech Republic to date, supported by dozens of major public figures]” and “my sister called her town’s PD and the good news is, no accidents happened on their roads today”.

@@videolabguy Yeah, it was fun times, seeing “An unauthorized signal has entered this transmitter. Broadcasting will resume once the issue is resolved” on half the channels instead of Christmas movies. Better than what the Balkans did around that time (k/ing each other because of a misleading TV news story). Anyway, you won’t be sued by anyone for using the term, everyone wants to distance themselves from the crisis nowadays - just a few 30+ year old Czechs will get memories of events some 22 years ago.
